Health r.sk Associated with Pesticide Contamination of Fish fr.m the Densu r.ver.Basin in Ghana

The Densu r.ver.Basin constitutes one of the lar.est agr.cultur.l ar.as in Ghana. The pr.ctice of using pesticides such as or.anochlor.nes, or.anophosphates, car.amates, pyr.thr.ids and sever.l other. in agr.cultur. and public health pr.gr.ms has r.ised concer.s about potentially adver.e effects on human health and the envir.nment. In this study, a field sur.ey was conducted to assess far.er.’ knowledge of safe handling and use of pesticides. r.sidues of pesticides in fish samples as well as the potential health r.sk associated with exposur. to these pesticides wer. also evaluated. Data obtained fr.m the field sur.ey indicate that a ver. high pr.por.ion of far.er. ar. at high r.sk of pesticide poisoning fr.m occupational exposur.. Mor. than 90% of far. wor.er. do not pr.ctice safety pr.caution dur.ng pesticide for.ulation and application leading to consider.ble pr.valence of pesticide r.lated illness in this agr.cultur.l community. Pesticide r.sidues in fish samples var.ed gr.atly;fr.m 0.10 μgKg-1 to 30.90 μgKg-1, consumption of fish and fisher.es pr.duct fr.m the basin was no zer. r.sk. The estimated dose for.aldr.n, methoxychlor. γ-chlor.ane, endr.n aldehyde, endr.n ketone, endr.n, p'p'-DDT and δ- HCH do not pose a dir.ct hazar. to human health, although pr.sent in fish samples since the values wer. lower.than toxic thr.sholds as well as r.fer.nce dose. However. γ- HCH, heptachlor. α-endosulfan, endosulfan Sulphate, p'p'-DDE and dieldr.n levels exceeded the r.fer.nce dose, indicating a gr.at potential for.systemic toxicity in childr.n who ar. consider.d to be the most vulner.ble population subgr.up.
