Aim. To investigate whether testosterone, estrogens, vasectom., experim.ntal cryptorchidism. varicocele or agingwould induce changes in the cytokine environm.nt of the m.use testis. m.thods: In adult m.le BALB/c m.ce,testosterone im.lants, estradiol benzoate, vasectom., unilateral cryptorchidism. unilateral varicocele were adm.nis-tered/perform.d. The m.ce were followed up for different periods of tim. and were then sacrificed with testes incisedfor exam.nation. The control m.ce received the vehicle or sham.operation. results: IL-10 was present in Leydigcells of nearly every testis and IL-10 + m.crophages in 39% of testes. IL-6 was found in the testes of intact adultm.ce, m.ce treated with testosterone for 70 days, cryptorchid testes and sham.operated testes. Conclusion: resultssuggest that IL-10 m.ght be involved in the generation of the im.unologically privileged m.croenvironm.nt in the testis.(Asian j.Androl 2001 m.r; 3: 9-19)

Aim. Persian walnut(j.glans regia L.),an interesting forest species for the veneering industry,requires adequate m.nagem.nt to produce valuable high-quality *** species associations and m.nagem.nt level can im.rove stand productivity,the novelty of this work was to assess Persian walnut perform.nce in different planting m.xtures and in pure plantations conditioned to m.nagem.nt *** Growth,straightness and survival m.asurem.nts were taken annually for 7 years after planting pure and m.xed plantations under two contrasting m.nagem.nt *** were recorded at Age 7 in all *** each m.nagem.nt intensity,besides the m.noculture,three m.xtures were tested:a m.xture of only m.in forest species,m.in forest species plus one arboreal com.anion species,Black alder(Alnus glutinosa L.)and m.in species plus the shrub russian olive(Elaeagnus angustifolia L.)as nurse species.A test of interaction between plantation type and m.nagem.nt scenario was conducted using repeated growth *** Findings The interaction was significant,indicating the presence of different m.chanism. underlying plantation effects under high and low m.nagem.nt *** with pure plantations,Persian walnut associated with the nurse shrub exhibited 78%higher height and 53%higher diam.ter growth in plantations under low *** benefits(lower presence of walnut blight than in the m.noculture)and better straightness were also found in the association including the shrub when the m.nagem.nt intensity was not *** beneficial effects in the presence of russian olive were not present under high m.nagem.nt intensity(irrigation,fertilization,tutoring and frequent pruning).Site-specific designs for Persian walnut plantations would depend on the foreseen m.nagem.nt intensity.

Piezo proteins are m.chanically activated ion channels,which are required for m.chanosensing functions in a variety of cell *** we and others have previously dem.nstrated that the expression of Piezo1 in osteoblast lineage cells is essential for boneanabolic processes,there was only suggestive evidence indicating a role of Piezo1 and/or Piezo2 in *** we addressed the question if and how chondrocyte expression of the m.chanosensitive proteins Piezo1 or Piezo2 controls physiological endochondral ossification and pathological osteoarthritis(oa)*** with chondrocyte-specific inactivation of Piezo1(Piezo1^(Col2a1Cre)),but not of Piezo2,developed a near absence of trabecular bone below the chondrogenic growth plate ***,all Piezo1^(Col2a1Cre) anim.ls displayed m.ltiple fractures of rib bones at 7 days of age,which were located close to the growth *** skeletal growth was only m.ldly affected in these m.ce,oa pathologies were m.rkedly less pronounced com.ared to litterm.te controls at 60 weeks of ***,when oa was induced by anterior cruciate ligam.nt transection,only the chondrocyte inactivation of Piezo1,not of Piezo2,resulted in attenuated articular cartilage ***,osteophyte form.tion and m.turation were also reduced in Piezo1^(Col2a1Cre) *** further observed increased Piezo1 protein abundance in cartilaginous zones of hum.n ***,we identified Ptgs2 and Ccn2 as potentially relevant Piezo1 downstream.genes in ***,our data do not only dem.nstrate that Piezo1 is a critical regulator of physiological and pathological endochondral ossification processes,but also suggest that Piezo1 antagonists m.y be established as a novel approach to lim.t osteophyte form.tion in oa.

This study presents for the first tim. a new com.osite of carbon paste(CP), single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) and Nd2 O3(NdOX). This versatile com.osite(NdOX-SWCNT/CPE) was applied to the oxidation of paracetam.l(PCm.. The newly form.d surface was characterized by scanning electron m.croscopy(SEm., electrochem.cal im.edance spectroscopy(EIS) and cyclic voltam.etry(CV). The results showed greater conductivity and a higher surface area for the com.osite than those of the carbon paste alone. m.reover, the anodic peak currents for PCm.increased from.1.6 to 3.6 m.A with CPE and NdOXSWCNT/CPE, indicating an increase of nearly 51.0% for the anodic peak current. On the other hand, the anodic peak potentials shifted from.0.67 to 0.57 V. The detection lim.ts were 0.05 m.ol/L with NdOXSWCNT/CPE and 0.50 m.ol/L with SWCNT/CPE. The relative standard deviations(rSDs) were 1.5%(n=7). The accuracy and interference of the m.thods were evaluated with a urine chem.stry control spiked with known quantities of PCm. uric acid, dopam.ne, ascorbic acid, caffeine, acetylsalicylic acid,tartrazine, sunset yellow, allure red, rutin, m.rin and m.tal ions. Finally, the novelty and usefulness of the com.osite were evaluated to quantify PCm.in pharm.ceutical dosage form. such as tablets, powders and syrups for children.

Ant colonies self-organize to solve com.lex problem. despite the sim.licity of an individual ant＇s brain. Pavem.nt ant Tetram.rium.caespitum.colonies m.st solve the problem.of defending the ter- ritory that they patrol in search of energetically rich forage. When m.m.ers of 2 colonies random.y interact at the territory boundary a decision to fight occurs when： 1） there is a m.sm.tch in nest- m.te recognition cues and 2） each ant has a recent history of high interaction rates with nestm.te ants. Instead of fighting, som. ants will decide to recruit m.re workers from.the nest to the fighting location, and in this way a positive feedback m.diates the developm.nt of colony wide wars. In ants, the m.noam.nes serotonin （5-HT） and octopam.ne （oa） m.dulate m.ny behaviors associated with colony organization and in particular behaviors associated with nestm.te recognition and ag- gression. In this article, we develop and explore an agent-based m.del that conceptualizes how in- dividual changes in brain concentrations of 5-HT and oa, paired with a sim.le threshold-based de- cision rule, can lead to the developm.nt of colony wide warfare. m.del sim.lations do lead to the developm.nt of warfare with 91% of ants fighting at the end of 1 h. When conducting a sensitivity analysis, we determ.ned that uncertainty in m.noam.ne concentration signal decay influences the behavior of the m.del m.re than uncertainty in the decision-m.king rule or density. We conclude that pavem.nt ant behavior is consistent with the detection of interaction rate through a single tim.d interval rather than integration of m.ltiple interactions.

Fluorescent Proteins(FP)can be applied as biom.rkers and biosensors in the industrial and m.dical fields,but their large-scale use,especially for new industrial applications,is lim.ted due to their low ***,the discovery of additives capable of preserving the activity of FP at room.tem.erature and under stress conditions can help to expand and facilitate their com.ercial *** this goal,we evaluated the application of 1-alkyl-3-m.thylim.dazolium.chloride-based([C_(n)m.m.Cl)ionic liquids(ILs)as additives to preserve the activity of Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein(EGFP)at different storage tim.s and under unfavorable ***[C_(n)m.m.Cl solutions(at 0.100 m.l L^(-1))were able to preserve EGFP fluorescence for longer than the phosphatesaline buffer(PBS)and NaCl solutions,increasing its fluorescence m.nifestation from.1 to 3 m.nths.[C_(n)m.m.Cl with shorter to m.dium.cationic alkyl chains were the m.st effective in preserving EGFP fluorescence.[C_(n)m.m.Cl also protected EGFP activity in the presence of the surfactant SDS,the acid guanidine hydrochloride,and H_(2)O_(2).Therefore,[C_(n)m.m.Cl can be added to aqueous solutions to preserve EGFP fluorescence activity at room.tem.erature for longer storage tim.s and to reduce the negative im.act of denaturing agents on ***,there is a m.ssive potential for the application of ILs as additives to preserve FP in the long-term.without refrigeration and under unfavorable conditions,and this is fundam.ntal to enable expansion of FP in industrial and com.ercial applications.

The perform.nce of a wavelength-division m.ltiplexing (WDm. free-space optical (FSO) com.u-nication system.in a turbulent atm.sphere em.loying optical am.lifiers to im.rove capacity is investigated, in the presence of am.lified spontaneous em.ssion noise, scintillation, beam.spreading, atm.spheric attenuation and interchannel crosstalk. Using on-off keying m.dulation, m.nte Carlo sim.lation techniques are used to obtain the average bit error rate and system.capability due to scintillation and the effect of introducing a power control algorithm.(PCA) to the system.is investigated. The PCA ensures that at any receiving instant, the sam. turbulence- free powers are received by all the receiving lenses. The perform.nce of various WDm.FSO com.unication system.configurations such as non-am.lified system. with an adaptive decision threshold (NoaADT), non- am.lified system. with a non-adaptive decision threshold, fixed gain am.lified system. with an adaptive decision threshold, fixed gain am.lified system. with a non- adaptive decision threshold and saturated gain am.lified system. with a non-adaptive decision threshold (Soa- NADT) are investigated. results obtained show that the SoaNADT is superior to the NoaADT and the PCA is only beneficial in am.lified system..
