The Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)is part of the scientific payload of the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)*** is a j.int science mission between the European Space Agency(ESA)and the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)and is due for launch in *** is a compact X-ray telescope with a wide field-of-view(FOV)capable of encompassing large portions of Earth’s magnetosphere from the vantage point of the SMILE *** is sensitive to the soft X-rays produced by the Solar Wind Charge eXchange(SWCX)process produced when heavy ions of solar wind origin interact with neutral particles in Earth’s *** provides a mechanism for boundary detection within the magnetosphere,such as the position of Earth’s magnetopause,because the solar wind heavy ions have a very low density in regions of closed magnetic field *** sensitivity of the SXI is such that it can potentially track movements of the magnetopause on timescales of a few minutes and the orbit of SMILE will enable such movements to be tracked for segments lasting many *** is led by the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom(UK)with collaborating organisations on hardware,software and science support within the UK,Europe,China and the United States.

Integrated observation platforms have been set up to investigate consequences of global change within a terrestrial network of observatories （TEREnO） in Germany. The aim of TEREnO is to foster the understanding of water, energy, and matter fluxes in terrestrial systems, as well as their biological and physical drivers. Part of the Lower Rhine Valley-Eifel observatory of TEREnO is located within the Eifel national Park. Recently, the national Park forest management started to promote the nat- ural regeneration of near-natural beech forest by removing a significant proportion of the spruce forest that was established for timber production after World War II. Within this context, the effects of such a disturbance on forest ecosystem functioning are currently investigated in a deforestation experiment in the Wtistebach catchment, which is one of the key experimental re- search sites within the Lower Rhine Valley-Eifel observatory. here, we present the integrated observation system of the Wiistebach test site to exemplarily demonstrate the terrestrial observatory concept of TEREnO that allows for a detailed mon- itoring of changes in hydrological and biogeochemical states and fluxes triggered by environmental disturbances. We present the observation platforms and the soil sampling campaign, as well as preliminary results including an analysis of data con- sistency. We specifically highlight the capability of integrated datasets to enable improved process understanding of the post-deforestation changes in ecosystem functioning.

Long-term effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of silver nanoparticles on microbial biomass, enzyme activity,and functional genes involved in the nitrogen cycle of loamy soil

The increasing production and use of engineered silver nanoparticles（AgnP） in industry and private households are leading to increased concentrations of AgnP in the environment. An ecological risk assessment of AgnP is needed, but it requires understanding the long term effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of AgnP on the soil microbiome. hence, the aim of this study was to reveal the long-term effects of AgnP on soil microorganisms. The study was conducted as a laboratory incubation experiment over a period of one year using a loamy soil and AgnP concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1 mg AgnP/kg soil. The short term effects of AgnP were, in general, ***, after one year of exposure to 0.01 mg AgnP/kg, there were significant negative effects on soil microbial biomass（quantified by extractable DnA; p = 0.000） and bacterial ammonia oxidizers（quantified by amo A gene copy numbers; p = 0.009）. Furthermore, the tested AgnP concentrations significantly decreased the soil microbial biomass, the leucine aminopeptidase activity（quantified by substrate turnover; p = 0.014）, and the abundance of nitrogen fixing microorganisms（quantified by nif h gene copy numbers; p = 0.001）. The results of the positive control with Ag nO3 revealed predominantly stronger effects due to Ag＋ion release. Thus, the increasing toxicity of AgnP during the test period may reflect the long-term release of Ag^＋ions. nevertheless, even very low concentrations of AgnP caused disadvantages for the microbial soil community, especially for nitrogen cycling, and our results confirmed the risks of releasing AgnP into the environment.

growing evidences indicate that dysfunction of autophagy contributes to the disease pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)and frontotemporal dementia(FTD),two neurodegenerative *** GGGGCC·GGCCCC repeat RnA expansion in chromosome 9 open reading frame 72(C9orf72)is the most genetic cause of both ALS and *** to the previous studies,GGGGCC·GGCCCC repeat undergoes the unconventional repeat-associated non-ATG translation,which produces dipeptide repeat(DPR)*** there is a growing understanding that C9orf72 DPRs have a strong ability to harm neurons and induce C9orf72-linked ALS/FTD,whether these DPRs can affect autophagy remains *** the present study,we find that poly-gr and poly-PR,two arginine-containing DPRs which display the most cytotoxic properties according to the previous studies,strongly inhibit starvation-induced ***,our data indicate that arginine-rich DPRs enhance the interaction between BCL2 and BECn1/Beclin 1 by inhibiting BCL2 phosphorylation,therefore they can impair autophagic clearance of neurodegenerative disease-associated protein aggregates under starvation condition in ***,our study not only highlights the role of C9orf72 DPR in autophagy dysfunction,but also provides novel insight that pharmacological intervention of autophagy using SW063058,a small molecule compound that can disrupt the interaction between BECn1 and BCL2,may reduce C9orf72 DPR-induced neurotoxicity.

Obj.ctive: The main obj.ctives of this study were to investigate whether [1] s ubcutaneous (SC) administration of pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn Rh) decreases the increased levels of luteinizing hormone (Lh) observed in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); and [2] GnRh administration modifies the pattern of Lh secretion observed in these patients. Design: Serum follicle-sti mulating hormone (FSh)and Lh levels and Lh pulse amplitude and pulse interval we re determined in 13 patients with PCOS during the first 3 days of the cycle following the ad ministration of 10 mg of medroxy progesterone acetate during 5 days. Setting: In fertility clinic. Patient(s): Thirteen women with PCOS. Intervention(s): Determi nation of FSh and Lh serum levels after SC administration of pulsatile GnRh. Mai n Outcome Measure(s): The FSh and Lh levels in serum. Result(s): Mean FSh and Lh levels in serum decreased following the administration of subcutaneous pulsatil e GnRh in all treated women compared with baseline values. The Lh pulse amplitud e and pulse interval decreased in all patients following the administration of p ulsatile GnRh. Conclusion(s): The SC administration of pulsatile GnRh in women w ith PCOS significantly decreases FSh and Lh levels in serum. A decrease in the s ecretion of gonadotropins, without reaching the intense suppression observed wit h GnRh analogues, could be of great utility in in vitro fertilization (IVF) trea tments.

Marine mammals undergo cycles of tissue ischemia and reperfusion during the dive *** inj.ry can result in oxidative tissue damage and the activation of a pro-inflammatory immune *** risk of oxidative damage is reduced by *** hypothesis is that the reported higher antioxidant defenses within marine mammal tissues provide additional protection in situations that produce oxidative stress,like inflammation,in comparison to terrestrial mammal *** were isolated from the whole blood of Pacific bottlenose dolphins(Tursiops truncatus gilli)and humans(homo sapiens)and were exposed to lipopolysaccharides(LPS,10μg/mL)in vitro to simulate a pro-inflammatory *** stress indicators,including superoxide radical(O_(2)^(•−))production,activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),glutathione peroxidase(GPx),glutathione reductase(gr),and glutathione S-transferase(GST),as well as oxidative protein damage,were quantified by *** 48 h under experimental conditions,bottlenose dolphin leukocytes produced 1.9 times more O_(2)^(•−)but displayed 2.0 times lower protein carbonyl concentrations compared to human *** 48 h under experimental conditions,bottlenose dolphin leukocytes displayed 7.9,2.0,11.1,and 3.3 times more activities of CAT,GPx,gr,and GST,respectively,compared to human *** results suggest that,under cell culture conditions,the antioxidant defenses in bottlenose dolphin leukocytes provide additional protection against pro-inflammatory challenges in comparison to human leukocytes,likely as an adaptive advantage.

Obj.ctive. Catabolism and growth impairment are well-known complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This may be caused by the disease activity itself and/or the medical treatment, and both may lead to changes in the growth hormone (Gh)/insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) axis. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of enteral nutrition. Impact Powder(r), as adj.vant therapy to corticosteroid treatment on changes in the Gh/IGF-I axis in patients with Crohn’ s disease (CD). Material and methods. The patients were randomized to 3-IP (ω -3-fatty acid (FA), 3 g/day) or 6-IP (ω -6-FA, 9 g/day). Changes in total IGF-I (tIGF-I) and total IGF-II (tIGF-II), free IGF-I (fIGF-I), IGF binding proteins (IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3), IGFBP-3 protease activity and insulin levels were examined in 31 patients with active CD (CDAI: 186-603) during treatment with prednisolone (40 mg for 1 week) and tapering the dose by 5 mg/week. Clinical and biochemical markers of inflammation were studied at day 0, and after 5 and 9 weeks. Results. There were no differences at baseline between the two groups. During the treatment period, tIGFI, fIGF-I and IGFBP-3 increased significantly in both groups compared to baseline (p hout differences between the groups. Insulin and IGFBP-1 showed no significant changes throughout the treatment period. Conclusions. There was no difference between 3-IP and 6-IP as adj.vant enteral nutrition on the Gh/IGF-I axis. The changes observed in the Gh/IGFI axis are in line with previously published studies and may be explained by corticosteroid treatment; however, we cannot exclude an additional effect of ω 3-/ω 6 FA as adj.vant enteral nutrition.
