f.esh-cut lettuce is widely used in ready-to-eat salads sold in modif.ed atmosphere packages (MAP).Even in MAP,f.esh-cut lettuce has short shelf.lif. that results in loss of.*** cultivars exhibit genetic variation f.r shelf.lif. in MAP,but their variation f.r nutrient retention is not *** accessions were evaluated f.r initial content of.ascorbic acid (AsA),carotenoids,and sugars and their retention in *** with high content and/or good retention of.one or more nutrients were *** romaine accession ‘f.oricos’ had high levels of.all the three *** with relatively high retention of.all the three nutrients were ‘Salinas 88’,‘Siskiyou’,‘Solar’,SM09A,‘Romance’,and ‘Green Towers’.Romaine cultivars,‘Balady Barrage’,‘Green Towers’,and ‘Darkland’ had relatively high initial levels of.all tested nutrients and good rate of.their *** was no clear correlation between initial AsA/carotene concentrations and their retention rates,suggesting that besides content,retention of.nutrients should also be a breeding target in a lettuce nutritional improvement *** analyses with the Pearson's correlation coef.icient determined a negative relationship between tissue deterioration(AUDePS) and retention of.all tested nutrients[r of.0.52 (Pf.r AsA,-0.27 (Pf.r total carotene,and-0.59 (Pf.r total sugars],suggesting that an increase in tissue deterioration intensif.es nutrient ***-sense heritability (H^(2)) across the experiments was0.15 f.r AsA,0.23 f.r total carotene,and 0.50 f.r total *** of.germplasm with high nutrient content,extended shelf.lif. and good nutrient retention provides valuable inf.rmation f.r the lettuce industry and associated breeding programs.

A hybrid methodology is proposed f.r use in low power, saf.ty critical wireless sensor network applications, where quality-of.service orientated transceiver output power control is required to operate in parallel with radio f.equency-based localization. The practical implementation is f.amed in an experimental procedure designed to track a moving agent in a realistic indoor environment. An adaptive time synchronized approach is employed to ensure the positioning technique can operate ef.ectively in the presence of.dataloss and where the transmitter output power of.the mobile agent is varying due to power control. A deterministic multilateration-based positioning approach is adopted and accuracy is improved by f.ltering signal strength measurements overtime to account f.r multipath f.ding. The location estimate is arrived at by employing least-squares estimation. Power control is implemented at two separate levels in the network topology. f.rst, power control is applied to the uplink between the tracking ref.rence nodes and the centralized access point. A number of.algorithms are implemented highlighting the advantage associated with using additional f.edback bandwidth, where available, and also the need f.r ef.ective time delay compensation. The second layer of.power control is implemented on the uplink between the mobile agent and the access point and here quantif.able improvements in quality of.service and energy ef.iciency are observed. The hybrid paradigm is extensively tested experimentally on a f.lly compliant 802.15.4 testbed, where mobility is considered in the problem f.rmulation using a team of.f.lly autonomous robots.

Acute liver f.ilure is a rare and devastating clinical condition. At present, emergency liver transplantation is the only lif.-saving therapy in advanced cases, yet the f.asibility of.transplantation is af.ected by the presence of.systemic inf.ammation, inf.ction and resultant multiorgan f.ilure. The importance of.immune dysregulation and acquisition of.inf.ction in the pathogenesis of.acute liver f.ilure and its associated complications is now recognised. In this review we discuss current thinking regarding the role of.inf.ction and inf.ammation in the pathogenesis of.and outcome in human acute liver f.ilure, the implications f.r the management of.such patients and suggest directions f.r f.ture research.

Sorghum metabolism continually adapts to environmental temperature as thermal patterns modulate diurnally and seasonally. The degree of.adaptation to any given temperature may be dif.icult to determine f.om phenotypic responses of.the plants. The present study was designed to see if.the ef.iciency of.quantum yield of.photosystem II could be used as a measure of.how well leaf.tissue metabolism was able to withstand a prolonged respiratory demand caused by elevated temperatures. The ef.iciency of.quantum yield values of.Pioneer 84G62 and Northrup King KS585 commercial sorghum hybrids showed that when the hybrids were grown in a 28°C/20°C day/night cycle in the greenhouse or the f.eld, Pioneer hybrid 84G62 withstood subsequent elevated thermal challenges better than Northrup King KS585. The same hybrids grown in a 39°C/32°C day/night cycle showed similar ef.iciency of.quantum yield values when thermally challenged. Water-def.cit stress increased the heat resistance of.the tissue raising the ef.iciency of.quantum yield of.both lines to the same level. Upon recovery f.om the water def.cit stress the dif.erential ef.iciency of.quantum yield values between the two lines re-appeared. The data provided in this study suggest a metabolic advantage of.Pioneer 84G62 to environmental thermal challenges compared with the Northrup King KS585.

f.esh-cut lettuce is popular,but highly perishable *** studies of.two bi-parental populations derived f.om crossing parents with rapid and slow rates of.deterioration showed that the deterioration rate is a heritable trait(broad spectrum heritability,H2 of.0.56–0.87).The maj.r genetic determinant of.the deterioration rate in both populations was the quantitative trait locus(QTL),qSL4,located on linkage group *** QTL explained 40–74%of.the total phenotypic variation of.the trait in the two *** the qSL4 region with single-nucleotide(SNP)markers allowed detection of.six haplotypes in a set of.16 lettuce accessions with dif.erent rates of.*** of.the haplotypes were always associated with very rapid rates of.deterioration,while the other three haplotypes were associated with slow rates of.*** SNPs located 53 bp apart were suf.icient to separate the 16 accessions into two groups with dif.erent rates of.*** accuracy of.markers-trait association was subsequently tested on 350 plants f.om seven f. f.milies that originated f.om crossing parents with dif.erent rates of.*** H2 of.deterioration rate in these seven f.milies ranged f.om 0.64 to *** SNP-based analysis accurately identif.ed individuals with rapid,intermediate,and slow rates of.deterioration in each *** rate of.deterioration was f.und in individuals having heterozygous alleles at qSL4,indicating an additive ef.ect of.the *** assay can be used f.r f.st,accurate,and reliable identif.cation of.deterioration rate af.er processing f.r salad.
