Anatomical characterization of central, apical and minimal corneal thickness

·AIM: To anatomically locate the points of minimum corneal thickness and central corneal thickness(pupil center) in relation to the corneal apex.·METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study, 299 healthy volunteers. Thickness at the corneal apex(AT),minimum corneal thickness(MT) and corneal thickness at the pupil center(PT) were determined using the pentacam. Distances from the corneal apex to MT(MD)and PT(PD) were calculated and their quadrant position(taking the corneal apex as the reference) determined:point of minimum thickness(MC) and point of central thickness(PC) depending on the quadrant position. Two multivariate linear regression models were constructed to examine the influence of age, gender, power of the flattest and steepest corneal axes, position of the flattest axis, corneal volume(determined using the Pentacam)and PT on MD and PD. The effects of these variables on MC and PC were also determined in two multinomial regression models.·RESULTS: MT was located at a mean distance of 0.909 mm from the apex(79.4% in the inferior-temporal quadrant). PT was located at a mean distance of 0.156 mm from the apex. The linear regression model for MD indicated it was significantly influenced by corneal volume(B =-0.024; 95% CI:-0.043 to-0.004). No significant relations were identified in the linear regression model for PD or the multinomial logisticregressions for MC and PC.·CONCLUSION: MT was typically located at the inferiortemporal quadrant of the cornea and its distance to the corneal apex tended to decrease with the increment of corneal volume.

District energy systems(deS)offer an optimal solution for decarbonising the heating and cooling sector while attaining multiple additional *** first step to analyse the potential of deS in both new and existing markets is through rapid assessments(RA).Currently,publicly available models lack rapid assessments of the technical-economic and environmental potential of *** RA model was developed within the framework of UNEP’s District Energy in Cities Initiative to identify deS’s potential spending low time and monetary *** this light,the study presents a model for conducting a rapid assessment applied to the case of Temuco,*** show that a total of 55 MW DH(district heating)capacity is required to cover the heating demand.A wood-chip boiler of 25 MW capacity and a gas boiler of 30 MW capacity are considered in the *** total CAPEX of the project is around 25 billion CLP,with a NPV of 10.5 billion CLP and an IRR of 14%.The project is also estimated to achieve an annual reduction of 24,382 tons of PM10 and 23,692 tons of *** model was validated against an independent study conducted by an international consulting company,and the results were found to be in close proximity with the ***,the model can be an effective tool for performing rapid assessments of deS projects in the region and subjecting attractive projects to more detailed pre-feasibility analysis.

Energy saving in existing buildings is of vital *** this work,the characterization of housing stock in Spain for energy retrofitting purposes has been *** regulations in force when the existing stock was constructed(1980–2007)were considered to model the envelope and thermal systems of single-family and block *** energy consumption and CO_(2) emissions were estimated for each type of dwelling and location,ranging from 44.2 to 130.6 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(13.6–32 kg CO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for multi-family homes,and 85.5 to 213.5 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(17.1–45.2 kg CO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for single-family homes.A global picture of the energy performance and emissions for 13 different climate zones was obtained with a total of 504 *** of the envelope allowed the reduction of consumption and emissions from 37.7%to 58%,depending on the climate *** consumption per square meter in block housing was lower than in single-family housing;nevertheless,single-family houses responded more effectively to energy improvement ***,non-renewable primary energy savings seem a better indicator of the improvement by retrofitting than the energy *** building models designed in this work may serve as a reference for subsequent research concerning energy retrofitting and energy savings of housing stock.

The biomass industrialization valorisation of grains and cereals is considered an opportunity for the countries where agro-industrial activity is one of its main economic activities,rendering new higher-value products with a concomitant solution to waste accumulation *** that end,in this work we describe and characterise bioactive compounds generation from rice husk by semisolid fermentation,obtained from 500 g of the material at room temperature and 60%humidity with mixed cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Gloeophyllum *** extract was evaluated in different situations:murine mammary tumour cells(4T1),normal cells(NIH 3T3)and in lactobacillus acidophilus,and Trichoderma *** results exhibited that the extract inhibited 4T1 cells at concentrations higher than 20μg/mL,but did not inhibit normal cells,and displayed germicide activity after 3 days *** propose that these functionalized compounds have a potential application in industry/agriculture/medicine obtained from rice husk waste.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 and cancer share many risk *** pleiotropic insulin-dependent and insulin-independent effects of metformin might inhibit pathways that are frequently amplified in neoplastic ***,modulation of inflammation,metabolism,and cell cycle arrest are potential therapeutic cancer targets utilized by metformin to boost the anti-cancer effects of *** in vitro and in vivo models have demonstrated the potential of metformin as a chemo-and radiosensitizer,besides its chemopreventive and direct therapeutic activity in digestive system(DS)***,these aspects have been considered in many cancer clinical ***-control and cohort studies and associated meta-analyses have evaluated DS cancer risk and metformin usage,especially in colorectal cancer,pancreatic cancer,and hepatocellular *** clinical studies have demonstrated the protective role of metformin in the risk for DS cancers and survival *** the other hand,the ability of metformin to enhance the actions of chemotherapy for gastric and biliary cancers is yet to be *** article reviews the current findings on the anti-cancer mechanisms of metformin and its apparatus from pre-clinical and ongoing studies in DS malignancies.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the second leading cause of cancer-related death *** five-year survival rate of CRC patients depends on the stage at diagnosis,being higher than 80%when CRC is diagnosed in the early stages but lower than 10%when CRC is diagnosed in advanced *** against specific CRC autoantigens(tumor-associated antigens(TAAs))in the sera of patients have been widely demonstrated to aid in early ***,we herein aim to identify autoantigens target of autoantibodies specific to CRC that possess a significant ability to discriminate between CRC patients and healthy individuals by means of liquid *** that end,we examined the protein content of the exosomes released by five CRC cell lines and tissue samples from CRC patients by means of immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry analysis.A total of 103 proteins were identified as potential autoantigens specific to *** bioinformatics and meta-analysis,we selected 15 proteins that are more likely to be actual CRC autoantigens in order to evaluate their role in CRC prognosis by Western blot(WB)and immunohistochemistry(IHC).We found dysregulation at the protein level for 11 of these proteins in both tissue and plasma exosome samples from patients,along with an association of nine of these proteins with CRC *** validation,all but one showed a statistically significant high diagnostic ability to distinguish CRC patients and individuals with premalignant lesions from healthy individuals,either by luminescence Halotag-based beads,or by a multiplexed biosensing platform involving the use of magnetic microcarriers as solid support modified with covalently immobilized Halotag fusion proteins constructed for CRC *** together,our results highlight the usefulness of the approach defined here to identify the TAAs specific to chronic diseases;they also demonstrate that the measurement of autoantibody levels in plasma against the TAAs identified here

The growing interest of the pharmaceutical industry in Near Infrared-Chemical Imaging (NIR-CI) is a result of its high usefulness for quality control analyses of drugs throughout their production process (particularly of its non-destructive nature and expeditious data acquisition).In this work,the concentration and distribution of the major and minor components of pharmaceutical tablets are determined and the spatial distribution from the internal and external sides has been *** addition,the same NIR-CI allowed the coating thickness and its surface distribution to be *** were processed to extract the target data and calibration models constructed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) *** concentrations of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and excipients obtained for uncoated cores were essentially identical to the nominal values of the pharmaceutical *** the predictive ability of the calibration models applied to the coated tablets decreased as the coating thickness increased.
