We here present a detailed study of the ligand-receptor interactions between single and triple-helical strands of collagen and the α2A domain of integrin(α2A),providing valuable new insights into the mechanisms and dynamics of collagen-integrin binding at a sub-molecular *** occurrence of single and triple-helical strands of the collagen fragments was scrutinized with atom force microscopy(AFM)*** interactions of the triple-stranded fragments comparable to those of collagen can only be detected for the 42mer triple-helical collagen-like peptide under study(which contains 42 amino acid residues per strand)by solid phase assays as well as by surface plasmon resonance(SPR)***,changes in NMR signals during titration and characteristic saturation transfer difference(STD)NMR signals are also detectable whenα2A is added to a solution of the 21mer single-stranded collagen *** dynamics(MD)simulations employing different sets of force field parameters were applied to study the interaction between triple-helical or single-stranded collagen fragments withα*** is remarkable that even single-stranded collagen fragments can form various complexes withα2A showing significant differences in the complex stability with identical *** results of MD simulations are in agreement with the signal alterations in our NMR experiments,which are indicative of the formation of weak complexes between single-stranded collagen andα2A in *** results provide useful information concerning possible interactions ofα2A with small collagen fragments that are of relevance to the design of novel therapeutic A-domain inhibitors.

AIM： To review all cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada （VKH） disease in an Inflammatory Eye Disease Service in Argentina and to describe the clinical profile and outcomes of ***： The records from patients with VKH disease between january 1980 and December 2008 were retrospectively analyzed for clinical profile, complications, and treatment. Patients were classified according to their initial treatment in group 1： high corticosteroid dose [≥1 mg/（kg·d）] within 2wk of illness onset; group 2： high corticosteroid dose, 2 to 4wk of onset and group 3： patients who received the high dose after 1mo of illness onset, patients who received lower oral doses than 1 mg/（kg·d） without regarding the time of beginning of the ***： A total of 210 eyes of 105 patients were included. The mean age at presentation was 32.6±13y （range： 10-74y）, and 86.7% were female. The mean duration of follow up was 144±96.6mo. Patients in the group 1 had significantly higher visual acuity than the other groups （P〈0.0001）, none had （loss of, or no） light perception at the end of follow up, whereas 24.7% patients in group 3 ended in light perception （P〈0.004）.CONCLUSION： Patients with early high dose corticosteroid treatment have better visual acuity and fewer complications. Proper timing in referral and treatment is critical for better visual outcome in VKH disease.

Accurate and efficient estimation of forest growth and live biomass is a critical element in assessing potential responses to forest management and environmental change. The objective of this study was to develop models to predict longleaf pine tree diameter at breast height （dbh） and merchantable stem volume （V） using data obtained from field measurements. We used longleaf pine tree data from 3,376 planted trees on 127 permanent plots located in the U.S. Gulf Coastal Plain region to fit equations to predict dbh and V as functions of tree height （H） and crown area （CA）. Prediction of dbh as a function of H improved when CA was added as an additional independent variable. Similarly, predic- tions of V based on H improved when CA was included. Incorporation of additional stand variables such as age, site index, dominant height, and stand density were also evaluated but resulted in only small improvements in model performance. For model testing we used data from planted and naturally-regenerated trees located inside and outside the geographic area used for model fitting. Our results suggest that the models are a robust alternative for dbh and V estimations when H and CA are known on planted stands with potential for naturally-regenerated stands, across a wide range of ages. We discuss the importance of these models for use with metrics derived from remote sensing data.

AIM： To identify the bacterial flora in conditions such as Barrett＇s esophagus and reflux esophagitis to determine if they are similar to normal esophageal flora. METHODS： Using broad-range 16S rDNA PCR, esophageal biopsies were examined from 24 patients [9 with normal esophageal mucosa, 12 with gastroesophageal reflux disease （GERD）, and 3 with Barrett＇s esophagus]. Two separate broad-range PCR reactions were performed for each patient, and the resulting products were cloned. In one patient with Barrett＇s esophagus, 99 PCR clones were analyzed. RESULTS： Two separate clones were recovered from each patient （total = 48）, representing 24 different species, with 14 species homologous to known bacteria, 5 homologous to unidentified bacteria, and 5 were not homologous （〈97% identity） to any known bacterial 16S rDNA sequences. Seventeen species were found in the reflux esophagitis patients, 5 in the Barrett＇s esophagus patients, and 10 in normal esophagus patients. Further analysis concentrating on a single biopsy from an individual with Barrett＇s esophagus revealed the presence of 21 distinct bacterial species. Members of four phyla were represented, including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Microscopic examination of each biopsy demonstrated bacteria in intimate association with the distal esophageal epithelium, suggesting that the presence of these bacteria is not transitory. CONCLUSION： These findings provide evidence for a complex, residential bacterial population in esophageal reflux-related disorders. While much of this biota is present in the normal esophagus, more detailed comparisons may help identify potential disease associations.

The structures assigned to all four members,1-4,of the recently reported favolasin class of natural product have been prepared for the first time by chemical ***-Miyaura cross-coupling chemistry was used to establish the associated biaryl *** key step used in preparing the 1,5-benzodioxepin ring system associated with compounds 3 and 4 was the acid-catalyzed 7-exo-tet cyclization of an appropriately substituted 2-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)phenol while a base-promoted 6-exo-tet cyclization of the same substrate was used to construct the 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxine core of target *** spectral data derived from the four synthetically-produced favolasins matched those reported for the corresponding natural *** biological screening of compounds 1-3 as well as a suite of fourteen precursors reveal that they display no notable anti-bacterial,anti-fungal or anti-tumor activities but congener K(4)is active,in the mM range,against Plasmodium falciparum.

Laser drivers are an enabling factor to inertial confinement fusion, because laser diodes must be used instead of flash lamps. We discuss the limitations of laser diode arrays and show what steps the industry is taking. The pump power requirements of large-scale projects such as LIFE or Hi PER are within reach of semiconductor laser diode *** light output powers per laser bars have been around 300 W per bar, as in the jenoptik 940 nm bars previously used for pumping the Yb:YAG slabs in the Di POLE project. By redesigning the semiconductor laser structures 500 W per bar is now commercially available for 808, 880 and 940 nm pump wavelengths. The construction of one inertial fusion power plant will require an amount of semiconductor laser chips in excess of the current annual production by two orders of magnitude. This adds to the engineering task of improving the device characteristics a challenge to production *** the industry benefits from the recent boost in solid-state lighting that acts as a technology driver, cooperation between manufacturers will be imperative, and to this end we propose standardization efforts.
