Background:The pathophysiology of lethal head trauma in infants and young children involves repetitive rotational forces of sufficient magnitude to produce subdural hemorrhage and brain swelling,which leads to considerable morbidity and *** precise mechanism for brain swelling is *** and Methods:We examined cerebral tissue from ten pediatric deaths due to blunt force trauma,along with seven control infants who asphyxiated in unsafe sleep *** assess the competence of the blood-brain barrier,we performed immunohistochemical stains for albumin and immunoglobulin G(IgG).Results:IgG and albumin were increased in subpial and superficial perivascular tissue in those cases due to blunt force trauma,and in particular,the blunt force trauma associated with subdural *** included two deaths at the scene without hospital survival ***:Our findings suggest disruption of the blood-brain barrier with vasogenic edema as an early event in head trauma involving young children upstream of global ischemic brain *** hypothesize that mechanical injury to the cortical vasculature results in vasogenic edema by oncotic(increased plasma proteins in the cortical interstitium)and hydrostatic(increased capillary pressure)mechanisms,with subsequent cortical *** may explain why ischemic sequelae appear to occur in head trauma involving young children,regardless of whether anoxia,hypotension,or cardiac arrest complicate the disease course and may in part underlie the high morbidity and mortality of head trauma in early childhood.

Effect of Pressure on Intermediate Valence States in Cerium Kondo Compounds

Electrical resistance, thermal expansion, lattice constants of the intermediate valence materials, α-Ce and CeBe 13, were measured at high pressure. It is found that the Grüneisen parameters of Kondo temperature T K are 13 and 42 for α-Ce and CeBe 13, respectively, and it decreases with increasing pressure. The magnetoresistance of α-Ce shows H2 dependence and its coefficient increases with pressure below 1 GPa, but becomes nearly constant above 1 GPa. The results indicate that the intermediate valence states are enhanced at high pressure indicating the enhancement of hybridization between the 4f electron and conduction band.

NEW TECHNIQUE FOR STUDY ON ISOTOPIC FRACTIONATION BETWEEN SEA WATER AND FORAMINIFERAL GROWING PROCESSES

The stable isotopic δ18O and δ13C composition of foraminiferal shell calcite varies as a function of many factors including temperature and salinity. In order to understand and interpret the variations in the isotopic composition of foraminiferal shell calcite, research has been recently focused on the role of the "vital effects’. Our examination of the lamella structure of several recent planktonic foraminifera indicates that the secretion of sequential lamellae results in multiple lamillae on earlier chambers and a single lamella on the final chamber. We used a very simple procedure to separate the individual whole test of foraminifera into several chambers and measured the isotopic composition of each growth stage chamber. The results indicate that the stable isotopic composition (carbon and oxy -gen), particukrly that of the last two chambers, of the foraminiferal test varies as a function of the individual growing process.

Effect of Mo on microstructural characteristics and coarsening kinetics of γ' precipitates in Co–Al–W–Ta–Ti alloys

The solvus temperature,volume fraction,coarsening behavior of γ＇ precipitates and the partitioning behavior of alloying elements as well as lattice misfit of γ/γ＇ phases influence the creep behavior of Ni-and Co-base ***,few investigations about the microstructural characteristics and the coarsening behavior of γ＇ precipitates were reported in multicomponent novel Co-base superalloys during thermal *** alloys containing different contents of molybdenum and tungsten have been investigated to explore the effect of molybdenum on γ＇ solvus temperature,γ ＋γ＇ microstructure and γ＇ coarsening in Co–Al–W–Ta–Ti-base *** results showed that the γ＇ solvus temperature decreases with the addition of *** addition reduces the Y＇ volume fractions after aging above 1000℃,but results in negligible influence on the γ＇ volume fractions aging at 900℃.Meanwhile,γ＇ coarsening is controlled by diffusion in experimental alloys after aging at 900℃ and 1000℃,and the kinetics of Y＇growth in experimental alloys are consistent with the predictions of LSW theory.

Self—Adaptive Clock Synchronization for Computational Grid

This paper presents an innovative method to synchronize physical clocks for a computational grid, in particular for a computational grid linked through the asynchronous Intranet or Internet environments. The method discussed is an asynchronous self-adaptive clock synchronization mechanism. Two strategies for clock synchronisation are introduced. (1) Use continuous time intervals to calculate the precision of clocks, which can reduce the effect of network delay efficiently. (2) Every node synchronizes its clock with its leader actively. In addition, a node self-adaptive model is presented, and the relationship between the clock precision and synchronization time is induced, hence a node can predict when it should begin the synchronization *** simulation and extension of this issue are provided at the end of the paper. The presented model is both practical and feasible.

A stabilized complementarity formulation for nonlinear analysis of 3D bimodular materials

Bi-modulus materials with different mechanical responses in tension and compression are often found in civil,composite, and biological engineering. Numerical analysis of bimodular materials is strongly nonlinear and convergence is usually a problem for traditional iterative schemes. This paper aims to develop a stabilized computational method for nonlinear analysis of 3D bimodular materials. Based on the parametric variational principle, a unified constitutive equation of 3D bimodular materials is proposed, which allows the eight principal stress states to be indicated by three parametric variables introduced in the principal stress *** original problem is transformed into a standard linear complementarity problem（LCP） by the parametric virtual work principle and a quadratic programming algorithm is developed by solving the LCP with the classic Lemke＇s algorithm. Update of elasticity and stiffness matrices is avoided and, thus, the proposed algorithm shows an excellent convergence behavior compared with traditional iterative *** examples show that the proposed method is valid and can accurately analyze mechanical responses of 3D bimodular materials. Also, stability of the algorithm is greatly improved.

Genetic algorithm optimization for finned channel performance

Compared to a smooth channel, a finned channel provides a higher heat transfer coefficient; increasing the fin height enhances the heat transfer. However, this heat transfer enhancement is associated with an increase in the pressure drop. This leads to an increased pumping power requirement so that one may seek an optimum design for such systems. The main goal of this paper is to define the exact location and size of fins in such a way that a minimal pressure drop coincides with an optimal heat transfer based on the genetic algorithm. Each fin arrangement is considered a solution to the problem （an individual for genetic algorithm）. An initial population is generated randomly at the first step. Then the algorithm has been searched among these solutions and made new solutions iteratively by its functions to find an optimum design as reported in this article.

Mechanistic links between gut microbial community dynamics, microbial functions and metabolic health

Gut microbes comprise a high density, biologically active community that lies at the interface of an animal with its nutritional environment. Consequently their activity profoundly influences many aspects of the physiology and metabolism of the host animal. A range of microbial structural components and metabolites directly interact with host intestinal cells and tissues to influence nutrient uptake and epithelial health. Endocrine, neuronal and lymphoid cells in the gut also integrate signals from these microbial factors to influence systemic responses. Dysregulation of these host-microbe interactions is now recognised as a major risk factor in the development of metabolic dysfunction. This is a two-way process and understanding the factors that tip host-microbiome homeostasis over to dysbiosis requires greater appreciation of the host feedbacks that contribute to regulation of microbial community composition. To date, numerous studies have employed taxonomic profiling approaches to explore the links between microbial composition and host outcomes(especially obesity and its comorbidities), but inconsistent host-microbe associations have been reported. Available data indicates multiple factors have contributed to discrepancies between studies. These include the high level of functional redundancy in host-microbiome interactions combined with individual variation in microbiome composition; differences in study design, diet composition and host system between studies; and inherent limitations to the resolution of r RNA-based community profiling. Accounting for these factors allows for recognition of the common microbial and host factors driving community composition and development of dysbiosis on high fat diets. New therapeutic intervention options are now emerging.

Nanocrystalline (Fe0.5 Co0.5 )86 Hf7 B6 Cu1 HITPERM alloy was investigated as the candidate of soft magnetic material for high temperature applications, compared with Fe86 Hf7B6 Cu1 NANOPERM alloy. Amorphous alloy ribbons were prepared by single-roller melt-spinning technology. Crystallization process of as-quenched ribbon was investigated using differential scanning calorimeter at different heating rates. The coercivity was determined from quasi-static hysteresis loop measured at room temperature using a computerized hysteresis loop tracer. X-ray diffraction with Cu Kα radiation was used to determine the structure. The vibrating sample magnetometer was usedto measure the magnetization as a function of temperature of the nanocrystllized alloys. That Co substitution for Fein alloy enhances the Curie temperature of amorphous alloy and the magnetization of nanocrystalline alloy at hightemperature. After annealing amorphous precursor, the optimum nanocrystalline alloy obtained shows the local minimum coercivity. The coercivity increases with the increasing annealing temperature corresponding to the formation of ferromagnetic phase in the secondary crystallization.

TRANSCRIPTION AND TRANSLATION OF ALFALFA LEGHEMOGLOBIN GENES DURING ROOT NODULE DEVELOPMENT

LegHb mRNAs isolated from 2 to 10-week old alfalfa nodules are actively translated in vitro to give a full component of legHb products suggesting that legHb genes, once expressed, are not regulated at the transcription level during the lifetime of a nodule. In vitro translation studies with legHb mRNAs from 10-week old nodules indicate that translation of mRNAs is partially inhibited by addition of alfalfa legHb components themselves and is not promoted by addition of myoglobin and hemoglobin as compared with those of alfalfa legHb mRNAs isolated from 4-week old nodules. This intimates that the regulation of alfalfa legHb synthesis in old nodules at the translation level is weakened.
