Consequences of unilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf Goats

Objective: To evaluate the influence of unilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf (WAD) bucks. Methods: semen was collected using electroejaculator from five unilaterally cryptorchid (UC) and five normal (non-cryptorchid) WAD bucks and analyzed for gross, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Results:Gross semen evaluation showed no differences between the groups in semen color, viscosity and pH, whereas the normal bucks yielded semen with significantly higher specific gravity (P=0.0436) and volume (P=0.0388) than the UC group. Following semen microscopic evaluation, the percentage of sperm vitality (live sperm) was not significantly different between both groups. However, UC bucks yielded semen with significantly lower sperm motility (P=0.0387), sperm concentration per mL (P=0.0020) and total sperm count per ejaculate (P=0.0074). The percentage total sperm abnormality was also higher (Psemen of UC goats. Abnormalities observed included sperm with cytoplasmic droplets, looped tails, coiled tails and tailless heads. sperm morphometry showed no differences in the sperm head length and head width between the groups. Biochemical semen evaluation did not reveal any differences between the groups in the concentration of seminal plasma total protein, catalase activity and lipid peroxidation level. Conclusions: Unilateral cryptorchidism significantly affected the quantity and quality of semen and spermatozoa in affected WAD bucks. Due to the hereditary attribute of the condition, it is recommended that animals with this condition should not be used in breeding to forestall increasing prevalence of cryptorchidism in goats.

The failure of testicular descent (cryptorchidism) is known to cause abnormal testicular development and function. Unilateral cryptorchidism is prevalent in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats particularly in some areas where affected bucks are presumed to have better libido and reproductive efficiency by farmers. Androgens produced by the testes can influence libido and other hormonal and metabolic processes in the body. The study investigated the influence of natural unilateral cryptorchidism on serum reproductive hormones, total protein, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and haematology and libido in WAD bucks. Ten WAD bucks (aged 12 - 14 months) comprising 5 bucks with normal descended testes (N group) and 5 unilaterally-cryptorchid bucks (UC group) were studied. Blood and sera were collected and evaluated for haematology, serum total proteins and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins) concentrations, serum oxidative stress (catalase and lipid peroxidation activity), and serum levels of reproductive hormones (testosterone, FsH and LH). Libido testing of bucks was also performed by randomly isolating and confining each individual male with a doe on standing heat and recording the number of mountings made by the male within a period of 5 minutes as the libido score. The evaluated haematological indices and serum levels of proteins, lipids, oxidative stress indicators and reproductive hormones were not significantly different between the N and UC groups (p > 0.05). Although a higher mean libido score was recorded in N bucks compared to the UC group, this difference was not significant. Whereas no negative effects were observed in the evaluated physiologic indices in UC bucks, these findings do not support the presumption by farmers that UC bucks have better libido than bucks with fully descended testes. Therefore, these animals should not be selected for breeding to avoid increasing the prevalence of unilateral cryptorchidism due to its genetic attribute.

Many methods have been proposed in the literature for solving the split variational inequality *** of these methods either require that this problem is transformed into an equivalent variational inequality problem in a product space,or that the underlying operators are ***,it has been discovered that such product space transformation may cause some potential difficulties during implementation and its approach may not fully exploit the attractive splitting nature of the split variational inequality *** the other hand,the co-coercive assumption of the underlying operators would preclude the potential applications of these *** avoid these setbacks,we propose two new relaxed inertial methods for solving the split variational inequality problem without any product space transformation,and for which the underlying operators are freed from the restrictive co-coercive *** methods proposed,involve projections onto half-spaces only,and originate from an explicit discretization of a dynamical system,which combines both the inertial and relaxation techniques in order to achieve high convergence ***,the sequence generated by these methods is shown to converge strongly to a minimum-norm solution of the problem in real Hilbert ***,numerical implementations and comparisons are given to support our theoretical findings.

The aim of this paper is to develop an expert system that could aid medical practitioner to effectively diagnose and treat staphylococcus aureus infections disease on a human. The objective of the research includes to develop an expert system for quick diagnosis and detection of staphylococcus aureus bacteria on human skin, a system that aids in accurate treatment of staph infectious diseases by doctors, helps in quick decision making in the hospital, improves accuracy in drug prescription, and a system that will bring about computerized storage process, and to enlighten the knowledge workers on how to implement a computer based decision support systems and importance of it in the health care. The research was motivated due to delay in diagnosis and identification of staphylococcus aureus bacteria and the fast rate at which infectious disease is spreading, delay in treatment of these bacteria, increase of guess work by health practitioners leading to delay in decision making and lack of electronic storage facility in the hospitals. Top down approach was used in the system design of this research while adopting expert system as the methodology and the programming language used was Java and database design used was MysQL. The result after design was a computerized standalone application that assists health practitioners (Doctor’s) in quick identification, diagnosis, prescription and treatment of staphylococcus aureus bacteria on human skin. The expert system will facilitate quick decision making in the clinic.

We describe a rare case of full term abdominal pregnancy in a Jehovah’s witness patient;she underwent laparotomy successfully without blood transfusion. Despite their belief regarding transfusion, Jehovah’s witnesses may not necessarily have a higher morbidity or mortality rate following a complex obstetric surgery as seen in the present case.
