Objective: To evaluate the influence of unilateral cryptorchidis. on s.men and s.erm characteris.ics.in Wes. African Dwarf (WAD) bucks. Methods. s.men was.collected us.ng electroejaculator from five unilaterally cryptorchid (uC) and five normal (non-cryptorchid) WAD bucks.and analyzed for gros., micros.opic and biochemical characteris.ics. Res.lts.Gros. s.men evaluation s.owed no differences.between the groups.in s.men color, vis.os.ty and pH, whereas.the normal bucks.yielded s.men with s.gnificantly higher s.ecific gravity (P=0.0436) and volume (P=0.0388) than the uC group. Following s.men micros.opic evaluation, the percentage of s.erm vitality (live s.erm) was.not s.gnificantly different between both groups. However, uC bucks.yielded s.men with s.gnificantly lower s.erm motility (P=0.0387), s.erm concentration per mL (P=0.0020) and total s.erm count per ejaculate (P=0.0074). The percentage total s.erm abnormality was.als. higher (Ps.men of uC goats. Abnormalities.obs.rved included s.erm with cytoplas.ic droplets. looped tails. coiled tails.and tailles. heads. s.erm morphometry s.owed no differences.in the s.erm head length and head width between the groups. Biochemical s.men evaluation did not reveal any differences.between the groups.in the concentration of s.minal plas.a total protein, catalas. activity and lipid peroxidation level. Conclus.ons. unilateral cryptorchidis. s.gnificantly affected the quantity and quality of s.men and s.ermatozoa in affected WAD bucks. Due to the hereditary attribute of the condition, it is.recommended that animals.with this.condition s.ould not be us.d in breeding to fores.all increas.ng prevalence of cryptorchidis. in goats.

The failure of tes.icular des.ent (cryptorchidis.) is.known to caus. abnormal tes.icular development and function. unilateral cryptorchidis. is.prevalent in Wes. African Dwarf (WAD) goats.particularly in s.me areas.where affected bucks.are pres.med to have better libido and reproductive efficiency by farmers. Androgens.produced by the tes.es.can influence libido and other hormonal and metabolic proces.es.in the body. The s.udy inves.igated the influence of natural unilateral cryptorchidis. on s.rum reproductive hormones. total protein, lipid profile, oxidative s.res., and haematology and libido in WAD bucks. Ten WAD bucks.(aged 12 - 14 months. compris.ng 5 bucks.with normal des.ended tes.es.(N group) and 5 unilaterally-cryptorchid bucks.(uC group) were s.udied. Blood and s.ra were collected and evaluated for haematology, s.rum total proteins.and lipids.(choles.erol, triglycerides.and lipoproteins. concentrations. s.rum oxidative s.res. (catalas. and lipid peroxidation activity), and s.rum levels.of reproductive hormones.(tes.os.erone, Fs. and LH). Libido tes.ing of bucks.was.als. performed by randomly is.lating and confining each individual male with a doe on s.anding heat and recording the number of mountings.made by the male within a period of 5 minutes.as.the libido s.ore. The evaluated haematological indices.and s.rum levels.of proteins. lipids. oxidative s.res. indicators.and reproductive hormones.were not s.gnificantly different between the N and uC groups.(p > 0.05). Although a higher mean libido s.ore was.recorded in N bucks.compared to the uC group, this.difference was.not s.gnificant. Whereas.no negative effects.were obs.rved in the evaluated phys.ologic indices.in uC bucks. thes. findings.do not s.pport the pres.mption by farmers.that uC bucks.have better libido than bucks.with fully des.ended tes.es. Therefore, thes. animals.s.ould not be s.lected for breeding to avoid increas.ng the prevalence of unilateral cryptorchidis. due to its.genetic attribute.
