Molecular Characterization of Type II Transposable Elements in Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata(L.) Walp]

Previous genetic studies in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] have shown that an active bipartite transposable element (TE) is responsible for a range of mutant phenotypes of its leaf, stem and flower. Since type II TEs have not been characterized at the molecular level in cowpea, this study was initiated to survey the presence of type II TEs in the cowpea genome. Type II TEs: Enhancer/Suppressor-mutator (En/Spm) and Miniature Inverted-repeat Transposable Elements (MITEs) were isolated and characterized. The sequence identity between the EnSpm TE clones was 46% at the nucleotide level (NL) and 30% at the amino acid level (AL) while that of MITEs was 71% at NL and 63% at AL. These cowpea En/Spm TEs were 80% homologous with En/Spm elements of other crops at NL and 46% at AL. The MITEs were 96% similar at NL and 18% homologous at AL. DNA gel blot analysis confirmed the presence of the En/Spm TEs in cowpea. RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) analysis showed that the VuEnSpm-3 and the MITE clone, VuPIF-1 were actively transcribed in wild type and mutant cowpea tissues. Overall, our data show that multiple, divergent lineages of En/Spm and MITEs are present in the cowpea genome, some of which are actively transcribed. Our findings also offer new molecular resource to further investigate the genetic determinants underlying previously described mutant cowpea phenotypes.

CONVERGENCE OF HYBRID VISCOSITY AND STEEPEST-DESCENT METHODS FOR PSEUDOCONTRACTIVE MAPPINGS AND NONLINEAR HAMMERSTEIN EQUATIONS

In this article, we first introduce an iterative method based on the hybrid viscos- ity approximation method and the hybrid steepest-descent method for finding a fixed point of a Lipschitz pseudocontractive mapping （assuming existence） and prove that our proposed scheme has strong convergence under some mild conditions imposed on algorithm parameters in real Hilbert spaces. Next, we introduce a new iterative method for a solution of a non- linear integral equation of Hammerstein type and obtain strong convergence in real Hilbert spaces. Our results presented in this article generalize and extend the corresponding results on Lipschitz pseudocontractive mapping and nonlinear integral equation of Hammerstein type reported by some authors recently. We compare our iterative scheme numerically with other iterative scheme for solving non-linear integral equation of Hammerstein type to verify the efficiency and implementation of our new method.

On Steady Flow of a Reactive Viscous Fluid in a Porous Cylindrical Pipe

Studies of mass transfer in a porous medium are of interest to researchers as a result of its various uses in different fields of engineering practices. This work examined the steady flow of a reactive variable viscous fluid in a porous cylindrical pipe. Dimensionless variables were used to dimensionalize the governing equations. A regular perturbation technique was employed to obtain an approximate solution of the resulting dimensionless non-linear equations. Numerical simulation was done to get the threshold values for the flow parameters under consideration. The effects of viscous heating and permeability parameters on the steady flow were studied and reported.

Development and Quality Analysis of a Direct Solar Dryer for Fish

The study investigates drying characteristics of common species of fish in the tropics, catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) using a direct solar dryer. The drying process was carried out during the dry and wet season under natural (0 m/s) and forced convective drying (1.5 m/s, 2.5 m/s, 3.5 m/s fan speed). Results obtained showed that the drying air attained by the dryer was satisfactory and the maximum temperature difference between the dryer and the ambient temperatures was 35°C. The moisture content of the dried samples was 13.97% for catfish and 13.35% for tilapia fish during dry season and during the wet season it was 15.68% for catfish and 14.9% for tilapia fish while for the open sun dried samples it was 21.7% for catfish and 17.0% for tilapia fish. Maximum drying efficiency of 74.3% was recorded for the dryer during dry season and the dried samples at 3.5 m/s fan speed were better in drying rates. The proximate compositions of the fish before and after drying were determined. There was significant difference in proximate composition before and after drying (P < 0.05) and no significant difference in proximate composition at fan speeds considered for both fish species (P < 0.05).

A Comparison Results of Some Analytical Solutions of Model in Double Phase Flow through Porous Media

In this paper, we consider Variational Iteration Method （VIM） and q-Homotopy Analysis Method （q-HAM） to sotve me partial differential equation resulted from Fingero Imbibition phenomena in double phase flow through porous media. We further compare the results obtained here with the solution obtained in [ 12] using Adomian Decomposition Method. Numerical results are obtained, using Mathematica 9, to show the effectiveness of these methods to our choice of problem especially for suitable values ofh and n.

Liquid Based Cytology of Cell Remnants in Needles Used for Breast Fine Needle Aspiration

This study examined cells contained in needles used for the collection of breast fine needle aspirates for the detection of malignant cells trapped in the needles. Remnants of cells contained in 50 needles used for the collection of scanty breast fine needle aspirates were examined by the liquid based cytology technique and compared with the conventional cytological technique of specimens in the corresponding syringes. The breast specimens were collected with clean sterile needles attached to the syringes. Smears were made and stained by the conventional method. The needles were removed from the syringes and a fixative was withdrawn into the syringes and the syringes were recapped with the needles. The fixative containing the specimen was then completely discharged into a centrifuge tube through the needles and treated by the liquid based cytology technique. The study revealed that cells were found trapped in all the needles used for the collection of breast FNA. 6% of them were positive for malignancy, similar to results obtained in the conventional method. Needles used for the collection of breast FNA should be examined before malignancy is completely ruled out particularly in extremely scanty specimens with a clinical suspicion of malignancy.

Effect of Shakeout Time on Microstructure and Hardness Properties of Grey Cast Iron

Solidification process of grey cast iron largely determines the resultant carbon precipitates in form of graphite or carbides. Microstructure and hardness properties of grey iron were therefore studied. Aggregate scraps were melted with varying inoculants composition of 0.1 wt%, 0.2 wt% and 0.3 wt%. Cast produced was shaken out of the mould at various timing. Microstructures of the samples were determined and analyzed. Hardness properties were equally evaluated. It was observed that the occurrence of carbides was more with 0.25 hrs shakeout time than other varying timing. Increasing shakeout time was found to decrease hardness and increase the carbide grain size. When the ferrosilicon content increases, there is a gradual decrease in the hardness properties from 59.6 HRC to 53.2 HRC for 0.25 hrs shakeout time cast sample. Similar decreases were observed for various timing analyzed.

Influence of Temperature-Dependent Thermophysical Properties of TiO2-SiO2-ZnO-Fe2O3/PAO Tetra-Hybrid Nanofluid along a Vertical Porous Surface with Suction

The significance of the thermophysical properties of Tetra hybrid nanofluid in enhancing heat transmission in various applications like heat exchangers, automobiles, and solar storage cannot be overstated. These features can be tampered with when nanoparticles are been introduced into the base fluid to produce an improved heat carrier fluid for the system. This study investigates the impact of temperature-dependent properties on the movement of TiO2-SiO2-ZnO-Fe2O3/PAO Tetra hybrid nanofluid along a vertical porous surface with suction. The system of governing Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) was formulated and transformed into the system of coupled nonlinear third-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) by similarity techniques. The resulting ODEs were solved numerically using the shooting method and fourth order Runge-Kutta method with the aid of Maple 18.0 software. Using numerical and statistical methods, the study analyzes velocity, temperature profiles, skin friction coefficient, and Nusselt number. It was found that as the variable thermal conductivity parameter upsurges both the skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number intensify at the rate of 0.011697519 and 8.043581616 respectively. This study underscores the vital role of Tetra hybrid nanofluid’s thermophysical properties in improving heat transmission for diverse appli cations. By manipulating nanoparticles within the base fluid, the heat carrier fluid’s efficiency can be enhanced, critical for industries like automotive and enewable energy. These insights inform the design of more efficient heat exchange systems, advancing sustainability and performance in real-world scenarios.

Surface Characterization of Metallic Particles in Printed Circuit Board Comminution Fines and the Processing Implication

From the background of poor responses of metallic particles in printed circuit board comminution fines to chemical conditioning froth flotation schemes, contrary to expectations based on native metal flotation, surface studies were carried out on samples of these metallic particles in quest for the probable causatives. Auger electron spectroscopy combined with argon beam depth profiling was employed in studying the surface make-up of the metal particles. The composition profiles down to 340 nm surface depth obtained showed that the supposed metallic particles consist of organics, oxides, and various trace alloys different from the bulk material of the particles. The profiles reveal the peculiar surfaces of the particles and the matrix from which the particles were liberated. The study provides insight for better appraisal of the flotation system the sample presents. Implementing chemical conditioning flotation scheme on this sample must carefully consider the peculiar surface make up in contrast to native metal occurrences.

Garlic Extract (Allium sativum) Enhances Spatial Working Memory in Wistar Rats: Involvement of Hippocampal Na+/K+ATPase and Ca2+ATPase Activities

Hippocampus plays a central role in the acquisition and recall of both episodic and spatial memory. Studies have shown that garlic has neuroprotective effects in various capacities and enhancement of different forms of memory. However, the effect of garlic spatial memory and direct effect of garlic extract on the activities of membrane bound enzymes Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase in the hippocampus of rat still remain elusive. Therefore, we studied the effect of ethanolic extract of garlic on spatial working memory using object location memory OLM test and the hippocampal Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase activities. Sixteen male wistar rats weighted 120 - 150 g were used and divided into two groups of eight rats each. The control and experimental groups were treated 1ml of normal saline and 500 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of garlic respectively orally for three weeks. OLM test was carried out on the two groups. Animals were sacrificed and the brains were removed, and hippocampi were carefully excised and homogenate was obtained. Homogenate was analyzed for Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase activities. There was significant increase in the exploration time in experimental group when compared with control group (p +/K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase activities in experimental group when compared with control group (p +/K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase. Our findings provide potential mechanism and therapeutic target for memory deficit neurological disorders.
