Background:Increasing demand for high-value fish species and pressure on forage fish is challenging aquaculture to ensure sustainable growth by replacing protein sources in aquafeeds with plant and terrestrial animal proteins,without compromising the economic value and quality of the final fish *** the present study,the effects of a plant protein-based diet(CV),two plant-based diets in which graded amounts of plan protein mixtures were replaced with Hermetia illucens meal alone(VH10)or in combination with poultry by-product meal(PBM)(VH10P30),a fishmeal(FM)diet(CF)and an FM diet supplemented with ***(FH10)on growth performance,gut health and homeostasis of farmed subadult European seabass were tested and ***:Fish fed the VH10 and VH10P30 diets showed the highest specific growth rates and lowest feed conversion ratios among the tested ***,the best preservation of PI morphology was observed in fish fed the CF or FH10 diets,while fish fed the CV diet exhibited significant degenerative changes in the proximal and distal ***,PBM supplementation mitigated these effects and significantly improved all gut morphometric parameters in the VH10P30 *** substitution of the plant mixture with insect meal alone or PBM also induced most BBM genes and activated BBM enzymes,suggesting a beneficial effect on intestinal digestive/absorption *** intestinal microbiota,fish fed diets containing *** meal(FH10,VH10,VH10P30)had the highest richness of bacterial communities and abundance of beneficial genera such as Lactobacillus and *** the other hand,fish fed CV had the highest microbial diversity but lost a significant component of fish intestinal microbiota,the phylum ***,skin pigmentation most similar to that of farmed or even wild seabass was also observed in the fish groups fed CF,FH10 or ***:Plant-based diets supplemented with PBM and *** pupae meal h

Congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens （CBAVD） is a manifestation of the mildest form of cystic fibrosis （CF） and is characterized by obstructive azoospermia in otherwise healthy patients. Owing to the availability of assisted reproductive technology, CBAVD patients can father children. These fathers are at risk of transmitting a mutated allele of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator （CFTR） gene, responsible for CF, to their offspring. The identification of mutations in both CFTR alleles in CBAVD patients is a crucial requirement for calculating the risk of producing a child with full-blown CF if the female partner is a healthy CF carrier. However, in the majority of CBAVD patients, conventional mutation screening is not able to detect mutations in both CFTR alleles, and this difficulty hampers the execution of correct genetic counselling. To obtain information about the most represented CFTR mutations in CBAVD patients, we analysed 23 CBAVD patients, 15 of whom had a single CFTR mutation after screening for 36 mutations and the 5T allele. The search for the second CFTR mutation in these cases was performed by using a triplex approach：（i） first, a reverse dot-blot analysis was performed to detect mutations with regional impact; （ii） next, multiple ligation-dependent probe amplification assays were conducted to search for large rearrangements; and （iii） finally, denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography was used to search for point mutations in the entire coding region. Using these approaches, the second CFTR mutation was detected in six patients, which increased the final detection rate to 60.8%.

Background Chronic liver diseases (CLD) present important clinical problem in children with various age-dependent causes. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with its increasing prevalence is a major problem with regard to its timely recog-nition and the need for long-term disease monitoring. At present, a perfect non-invasive method for the evaluation of liver fibrosis is not available. Methods A non-systematic literature search was performed to summarize the current knowledge about transient elastog-raphy (TE) with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) in children with CLD. Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, Google scholar, and The Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles evaluating TE in the pediatric population. Results Normal values of liver stiffness measurements (LSM) according to the age are given, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the method. The utility of TE in specific liver disease in pediatric population is summarized. Conclusions TE with CAP is a valuable non-invasive method for the liver-damage assessment. Clinical interpretation of TE results should be made in parallel with the assessment of the patient's demographics, disease etiology, and essential laboratory parameters.

The effects of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), lavender (Lavandula angustifola), oregano (Origanum vulgare) and savory (Satureja montana) extracts, alone and in mixtures, on lipid oxidation in cold-marinated shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) were studied. During the two-month screening period using the thiobarbituric reactive substances assay (TBARS) the most effective extract mixture (rosemary:oregano:lavender extracts in 3:2:1 ratio, ROL) was selected for the shelf-life study in pilot production of marinated shrimp to determine its effects on the quality characteristics of the final product. Degradation of the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaeonic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during 8 months of refrigerated storage, was inhibited in shrimp marinated with ROL compared to control samples. In addition, lower levels of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA-N) were observed in shrimp treated with extracts while the TBARS values remained below the limit of 3 mu mol malondialdehyde (MDA)/100g during the 8-month shelf-life study period, whereas the control sample exceeded this value in the third month. The total number of aerobic mesophilic and psychrophilic microorganisms was reduced after marinating with extracts. The obtained results are promising with regard to the application of plant extracts, especially the tested ROL mixture, to extend the shelf-life of food products and to reduce lipid oxidation and microbial load in the food model.

Background The importance of sheep breeding in the Mediterranean part of the eastern Adriatic has a long tradition since its arrival during the Neolithic *** production system is extensive and generally carried out in traditional systems without intensive systematic breeding programmes for high uniform trait production(carcass,wool and milk yield).Therefore,eight indigenous Croatian sheep breeds from eastern Adriatic treated here as metapopulation(EAS),are generally considered as multipurpose breeds(milk,meat and wool),not specialised for a particular type of production,but known for their robustness and resistance to certain environmental *** objective was to identify genomic regions and genes that exhibit patterns of positive selection signatures,decipher their biological and productive functionality,and provide a"genomic"characterization of EAS adaptation and determine its production *** We identified positive selection signatures in EAS using several methods based on reduced local variation,linkage disequilibrium and site frequency spectrum(eROHi,iHS,nSL and CLR).Our analyses identified numerous genomic regions and genes(e.g.,desmosomal cadherin and desmoglein gene families)associated with environmental adaptation and economically important *** candidate genes were related to meat/production and health/immune response traits,while some of the candidate genes discovered were important for domestication and evolutionary processes(e.g.,HOXa gene family and FSIP2).These results were also confirmed by GO and QTL enrichment *** Our results contribute to a better understanding of the unique adaptive genetic architecture of EAS and define its productive type,ultimately providing a new opportunity for future breeding *** the same time,the numerous genes identified will improve our understanding of ruminant(sheep)robustness and resistance in the harsh and specific Mediterranean environment.
