Functional traits shape size-dependent growth and mortality rates of dry forest tree species

Aims Functional traits have emerged as an important tool to evaluate plant ***,the environmental conditions and ecological pressures that plants face change with their size,and the relationship between traits and plant performance should therefore be size-dependent,which has rarely been *** Here,we evaluated over a broad range of tree sizes the interspe-cific relationship between tree growth and mortality and eight func-tional stem,leaf and seed *** did so across 59 tree species in Brazilian dry forests and evaluated whether the relationships found for wet forest types in the literature also hold for dry forests,where water rather than light might limit tree *** Findings We indeed found a strong size-dependent relationship between demographic rates and functional *** small sizes,when trees are in the shaded understory,species with functional trait values that enhance light capture or shade tolerance(*** maximum adult stature,taller heights,wider crowns,higher seed mass)have higher growth and/or lower mortality rates(MR).This relationship disappears at larger sizes when trees attain better light conditions in the *** adaptations play only a role at larger tree sizes;once trees are in the dry and exposed canopy,species with higher wood density(an indicator of cavitation resistance)have lower *** study shows that both drought and shade adaptations are important in this dry forest,and that the relationships between func-tional traits and plant performance changes with plant *** size should therefore explicitly be included as an axis of variation in functional analyses,to better understand the relationship between functional traits and demographic rates.

We present and experimentally study the effects of the photonic spin–orbit coupling on the real space propagation of polariton wavepackets in planar semiconductor microcavities and polaritonic analogues of *** particular,we demonstrate the appearance of an analogue Zitterbewegung effect,a term which translates as‘trembling motion’in English,which was originally proposed for relativistic Dirac electrons and consisted of the oscillations of the centre of mass of a wavepacket in the direction perpendicular to its *** a planar microcavity,we observe regular Zitterbewegung oscillations whose amplitude and period depend on the wavevector of the *** then extend these results to a honeycomb lattice of coupled microcavity *** to the planar cavity,such lattices are inherently more tuneable and versatile,allowing simulation of the Hamiltonians of a wide range of important physical *** observe an oscillation pattern related to the presence of the spin-split Dirac cones in the *** both cases,the experimentally observed oscillations are in good agreement with theoretical modelling and independently measured bandstructure parameters,providing strong evidence for the observation of Zitterbewegung.

Russia＇s Vision of the Belt and Road Initiative：From the Rivalry of the Great Powers to Forging a New Cooperation Model in Eurasia

The article aims to highlight Russian approaches to Chinese One Belt-One Roadinitiative. It examines possible opportunities and challenges for co-development of theEurasian Economic Union and the Belt project. Both projects and their co-developmentmay reduce the uncertainty in Eurasia, caused by significant structural changes ininternational relations and the world economy, the emergence of new trade regimesand the erosion of leadership in international affairs. Russian interests in this regardare determined by the need for modernization and long-term development, which couldalso help to address acute security issues. These particular factors encouraged Russiato come up with an ambitious plan of the Extensive Eurasian Partnership, although theprospects of its implementation currently are uncertain. The present article argues thatthe success of Russia-China collaboration in Eurasia will depend crucially on the futuredynamics of the Eurasian integration, as well as on the agreement to co-develop theEurasian Economic Union and the Belt Initiative with concrete and mutually beneficialprojects.

Transition Operator Approach to seismic Full-Waveform Inversion in Arbitrary Anisotropic Elastic Media

structure-activity relationship in water-gas shift reaction over gold catalysts supported on Y-doped ceria

The utilization of pure hydrogen as an energy source in fuel cells gave rise to renewed interest in developing active and stable water-gas shift catalysts. Gold catalysts have proven to be very efficient for water-gas shift reaction at low temperature. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of:(i) different preparation methods(impregnation and coprecipitation) to obtain a modified ceria support,and(ii) the amount of Y_2 O_3(1.0 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 5.0 wt% and 7.5 wt%) as dopant on the water-gas shift activity of Au/CeO_2 catalysts. An extended characterization by means of s_(BET), XRD, HRTEM/HAADF, FTIR,H_2-TPR and CO-TPR measurements in combination with careful evaluation of the catalyst behavior allowed to shed light on the parameters governing the water-gas shift activity. The catalysts show very high activity(>90% CO conversion) in the temperature range 180-220 ℃,with a slightly better performance of the gold catalysts on supports prepared by impregnation. The decreased activity with increasing Y_2 O_3 concentration is related to the hindering of oxygen mobility due to ordering of surface oxygen vacancies in vicinity of segregated Y^(3+). The effect of catalyst pre-treatments and the stability of the best performing samples were examined as well.

Rheological explosion in polymers under uniaxial compression in an open volume occurs at the end of continuous rapid plastic deformation after several stages of *** types of polymers were chosen for this study:brittle glassy amorphous polystyrene and thermoplastic semi-crystalline *** pulses were detected during explosion,and their spectra were analyzed with two models.X-ray diffraction methods were used to investigate changes in the structure and morphology of polymers during deformation and rheological *** pores appear in polymer in this process,and their shape and size distribution were derived from X-ray *** main reason for the formation of pores in polymer samples in rheological explosion experiments is the intense microshifts in the polymer volume under the action of high applied pressure.

The Comprehensive Assessment of systems for Built Environment Efficiency(CAsBEE)for Home is the first national voluntary Green Building Program for residential structures in *** effect of builder demographic factors on the adoption of the CAsBEE for Home program were investigated since the success of CAsBEE for Home will be heavily reliant on the usage of the *** this study,the adoption of the CAsBEE for Home program by home builders is modeled as a two-stage process with builder awareness preceding the actual use of CAsBEE for *** results show that both firm size and the type of homes built influence Japanese builder’s awareness of the CAsBEE for Home *** addition,respondents who had participated in the 200-Year House Program,another voluntary program,were significantly more likely to use CAsBEE for ***,the number of years a builder has been in business both increased their awareness and usage of the CAsBEE for Home *** results suggest that the likelihood of adopting the CAsBEE for Home program was influenced by the internal resources available,the type of customers being served,and the business experience of the firm.

LaConf:A Localized Address Autoconfiguration scheme for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

We propose a localized address autoconfiguration （LaConf） scheme for wireless ad hoc networks. Address allocation information is maintained on the network border nodes, called addressing agents （AAs）, which are locally identified by a geographic routing protocol GFG （Greedy-FACE-Greedy）. When a node joins the network, it acquires an address from a neighboring AA （if any exists） by local communication or from the head AA （a geographic extreme AA） by GFG-based multi-hop communication. A Geographic Hash Table （GHT） is adopted for duplicate address detection. Each address is hashed to a unique location in the network field, and the associated assignment information is stored along the face perimeter enclosing that location （in the planar graph）. When a node receives an address assignment, it consults with the perimeter nodes around the hash location of the assigned address about any conflicts. AAs detect network partitions and merger locally according to neighborhood change and trigger AA re-selection and network re-configuration （if necessary）. We propose to apply a Connected Dominating set （CDs） to improve the performance. We also evaluate LaConf through simulation using different planar graphs.

BACKGROUND Nutrition recommendations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are to consume rye or integral bread instead of white bread.A positive effect on glucoregulation has been achieved by enriching food with various biologically active substances of herbal origin,so we formulated an herbal mixture that can be used as a supplement for a special type of bread(sTB)to achieve better effects on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in patients with *** To compare organoleptic characteristics and effects of two types of bread on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in T2DM *** This trial included 97 patients with T2DM.A parallel group of 16 healthy subjects was also *** participants were given 50 g of rye bread and the same amount of a sTB with an herbal mixture on 2 consecutive *** blood glucose and insulin levels were compared at the 30^(th),60^(th),90^(th) and 120th min.A questionnaire was used for subjective estimation of the organoleptic and satiety features of the two types of *** Compared to patients who consumed rye bread,significantly lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations were found in T2DM patients who consumed *** relevant differences were found among the healthy *** estimated organoleptic and satiety characteristics are better for sTB than for rye *** sTB have better effects than rye bread on postprandial glucoregulation in T2DM *** estimated organoleptic and satiety characteristics are better for sTB than for rye ***,sTB can be recommended for nutrition in T2DM patients.
