Standardizing MI-TLIF, a Proposal for a Reproducible Technique

Background: Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI TLIF) is a widely known and performed technique, however its versatility among different physicians continues to hinder its replication and results. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a step-by-step surgical guide to perform a safe MI-TLIF, based on the results obtained in patients operated on by a single surgeon over a period of 12 years. Patients and methods: A retrospective, single center, longitudinal, and observational cohort study was conducted with 931 patients who underwent MI TLIF by a single surgeon between 2010 and 2022 using the technique described on this paper, each with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Criteria included Schizas classification, listhesis according to Meyerding classification, number of levels treated, cage size, and complications (screw repositioning or cerebrospinal fluid leak). Patient clinical outcomes were assessed using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), visual Analog Scale (vAS) for pre- and postoperative radicular pain. Thin slice CT scans were used to assess the progression of the fusion using the Bridwell classification. In the statistical analysis, percentages, median, and interquartile range (IQR) were calculated. Results: nine hundred and thirty one patients underwent MI TLIF using the technique described, eight hundred and eighty (94.5%) had a single level treated and fifty one (5.5%) had a 2 level procedure (982 levels), an 8mm cage was placed on five hundred and seventeenlevels (52.7%), six hundred and sixty three levels(67.6%) achieved grade I fusion, two hundred and sixty six levels (27.1%) achieved grade II fusion, 52 levels (5.3) achieved grade III fusion and one level (0.1) achieved a grade iv fusion or non-union. The incredibly complex soil microbial communities at small scales make their analysis and identification of reasons for the observed structures *** community structure is mainly a result of the inoculum(dispersal),the selective advantages of those organisms under the habitat-based environmental attributes,and the ability of those colonizers to sustain themselves over *** soil is protective,and its microbial inhabitants have long adapted to varied soil conditions,significant portions of the soil microbial community structure are likely ***,a substantial portion of the community will not correlate to often measured soil *** suggest that the drivers be ranked on the basis of their importance to the fundamental needs of the microbes:(i)those that supply energy,i.e.,organic carbon and electron acceptors;(i)environmental effectors or stressors,i.e.,pH,salt,drought,and toxic chemicals;(ii)macro-organism associations,i.e.,plants and their seasonality,animals and their fecal matter,and soil fauna;and(iv.nutrients,in order,n,P,and probably of lesser importance,other micronutrients,and *** relevance of drivers also varies with spatial and time scales,for example,aggregate to field to regional,and persistent to dynamic populations to transcripts,and with the extent of phylogenetic difference,hence phenotypic differences in organismal *** present a summary matrix to provide guidance on which drivers are important for particular studies,with special emphasis on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales,and illustrate this with genomic and population(rRnA gene)data from selected studies.

Many quantum emitters have been measured close or near the grain boundaries of the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride where various Stone–Wales defects *** show by means of first principles density functional theory calculations that the pentagon–heptagon Stone–Wales defect is an ultraviolet emitter and its optical properties closely follow the characteristics of a 4.08-ev quantum emitter,often observed in polycrystalline hexagonal boron *** also show that the square–octagon Stone–Wales line defects are optically active in the ultraviolet region with varying gaps depending on their density in hexagonal boron *** results may introduce a paradigm shift in the identification of fluorescent centres in this material.

Evaluating methods to quantify sediment volumes trapped behind check dams,Saldana badlands(Spain)

The determination of sediment yield in catchments based on the sediment trapped by check dams is becoming a subject of *** fact,several methods have been developed in recent years to estimate the sediment retained by check *** complexity,precision and accuracy of each method vary *** this study,we evaluate the sediment trapped by check dams comparing the Sections method respect to the Prism,Pyramid,DTMs and Trapezoid *** analyzed a sample of 25 check dams(α-1=90%;ε=10%) in the Saldana badlands(Spain).The results showed that the Sections method offered a volume of retained sediment between the others,which gave an absolute variation from 22%to40%.The high variability of the check dam and sediment wedge sizes made necessary to compare methods in groups combining both *** significant differences in sediment volumes could be found between the methods for very small(height(h):1.8-2.3 m;trapped volume(v):6-102 m3) or large check dams(h > 2.3 m;v:165-387 m3),while significant differences are found for small(h v:1-229 m3) or middle-sized check dams(h:2.2-3.2 m;v:65-235 m3).nevertheless,volume differences between groups ranged up to + 25%.For these reason,the size of the check dam,the shape of the sediment wedge and the accuracy of the measure methods must considered when selecting an appropriate method to obtain the volume of retained sediment by check dams.A correct estimation of the sediment retention is needed to evaluate the role and efficiency of check dams in restoration projects or to estimate sediment yields.

The Upper Devonian,Middle Famennian Dankovo-Lebedyansky sediments in Southeast Tatarstan territory are a carbonate sequence composed of limestone and dolomite,which is important hydrocarbon reservoir units,therefore,it is necessary to conduct in-depth study on its microfacies and depositional *** this study,a multidisciplinary approach that combines core observation with thin section examination is *** limestone contains abundant skeletal grains(echinoderms,foraminifera,algae,gastropods,and calcispheres),as well as non-skeletal grains(intraclasts and peloids).On the basis of detailed petrographic investigations,six sedimentary microfacies can be identified,including(i)peloidal grainstone(MF 1),(ii)cemented bioclastic peloidal grainstone(MF 2),(iii)echinodermconcentrated packstone(MF 3),(iv)algae packstone(MF 4),(v)bioclastic wackestone(MF 5),(vi)whole-fossil wackestone(MF 6),as well as dolomite or dolostone as diagenetic facies(MF 7).Based on microfacies analysis,the Dankovo-Lebedyansky sediments were deposited in three distinct sedimentary facies belts(shoal,lagoon and open marine environment).In order to reflect dispositional energy condition,the microfacies were grouped into facies associations:(i)low-energy microfacies associations including MF 5 and MF 6,(ii)moderate energy microfacies associations including MF 1,MF 2,MF 3,and MF *** dolomite,or diagenetic facies(MF 7),is the result of slightly to extensively dolomitization of limestone in the Dankovo-Lebedyansky *** of frequent dolostone types are euhedral planar-e and subhedral *** to petrographic characteristic of the dolostone,a seepage reflux model can be used to explain the dolomitization process of Dankovo-Lebedyansky sediments.
