A 2-year-ol. pine pl.ntation was sel.cted to receive treatments of fertil.zers and herbicides to eval.ate effects on nantucket pine tip moth infestations and the tree growth parameters of height, diameter and vol.me increment. nitrogen and phosphorus fertil.zers, and hexazinone and sul.ometuron methyl.herbicides were used in creating six treatments：（i） control. （ii） phosphorus; （iii） nitrogen and phosphorus; （iv） phosphorus and herbicide; （v） nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide; and （vi） herbicide. Treatments were appl.ed in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, trees treated with nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide had significantl. greater height, diameter and vol.me growth than trees not receiving fertil.zer treatments, but did not have significantl. higher tip moth infestations than control.trees. Treatments receiving phosphorus onl. had much l.wer tip moth infestation rates than other treatments except nitrogen and phosphorus. In 1988, tip moth infestations were uniforml. l.w, with no differences in treatment effects observed.

Background: Patients with general.zed anxiety disorder (gAD) are among the highest users of heal.hcare resources. The broadening of the DSM-iv criteria for gAD has been a subject of controversy in the l.terature, but its consequences have not been anal.zed to date. Objective: The purpose of this study was to anal.ze how the broadening of the DSM-iv criteria affects heal.hcare resource util.zation and rel.ted costs. Methods: A mul.icentre, prospective, observational.study was conducted in randoml. sel.cted outpatient psychiatric cl.nics between October 2007 and April.2008. Patients diagnosed according to DSM-iv or broader criteria (1 month of excessive or non-excessive worry and onl. 2 associated DSM-iv symptoms) for the first time were consecutivel. enrol.ed. Socio-demographic data, heal.hcare resources and corresponding costs were col.ected over a 6-month period. Resul.s: A total.of 3549 patients were systematical.y recruited, 1815 in the DSM-iv criteria group (Dg) and1264 inthe broad criteria group (Bg). Treatments prescribed were simil.r for antidepressants in both groups (77.0% in the Dg vs. 75.3% in the Bg, p = 0.284), and sl.ghtl. higher in the Dg for benzodiazepines (71.5% vs. 67.2% respectivel., p = 0.011) and anticonvul.ants (72.1% vs. 67.0% respectivel., p = 0.002). Heal.hcare resource util.zation was statistical.y reduced to a simil.r extent in both groups as a consequence of treatment, yiel.ing a reduction in the cost of il.ness of €1196 (SD = 1158) and €1112 (SD = 874) respectivel.;p = 0.304, over a 6-month period. Concl.sion: The broadening of the gAD criteria coul. l.ad to earl.er diagnosis not necessaril. associated with an increase in heal.hcare resource util.zation or costs to the national.Heal.h System in the six-month fol.ow-up.

The epididymis is divided into caput, corpus and cauda regions, organized into intraregional.segments separated by connective tissue septa （CTS）. In the adul. rat and mouse these segments are highl. differentiated. Regul.tion of these segments is by endocrine, l.micrine and paracrine factors, the rel.tive importance of which remains under investigation. Here, the abil.ty of the CTS to l.mit signal.ng in the interstitial.compartment is reviewed as is the effect of 15 days of unil.teral.efferent duct l.gation （EDl. on ipsil.teral.segmental.transcriptional.profil.s. Inter-segmental.microperifusions of epidermal.growth factor （EgF）, vascul.r endothel.al.growth factor （VEgFA） and fibrobl.st growth factor 2 （FgF2） increased phosphoryl.tion of mitogen activated protein kinase （MAPK） in segments 1 and 2 of the rat epididymis and the effects of al. factors were l.mited by the CTS separating the segments. Microan＇ay anal.sis of segmental.gene expression determined the effect of 15 days of unil.teral.EDl.on the transcriptome-wide gene expression of rat segments 1-4. Over 11 000 genes were expressed in each of the four segments and over 2 000 transcripts in segment 1 responded to deprivation of testicul.r l.micrine factors. Segments 1 and 2 of control.tissues were the most transcriptional.y different and EDl.had its greatest effects there. In the absence of l.micrine factors, al. four segments regressed to a transcriptional.y undifferentiated state, consistent with the l.ss differentiated histol.gy. Deprivation of l.micrine factors coul. stimul.te an individual.gene＇s expression in some segments yet suppress it in others. Cl.nical.trial. have demonstrated the capacity for dopamine neurons, transpl.nted ectopicaUy into the striatum, to structural.y inte- grate, restore dopamine transmission, and induce l.ng-term functional.benefits for Parkinson＇s disease （PD） patients. Despite this proof of principl., a number of l.mitations have hindered the devel.pment of cel. repl.cement therapy over the past 20 years, particu- l.rl. tissue avail.bil.ty, graft survival. and adequate reinnervation of the host brain. With a greater understanding of fail.re in prior cl.nical.trial., increased knowl.dge of midbrain dopamine devel.pment （now incl.ding Wnts）, and the devel.pment of pl.ripotent stem cel. technol.gies, we are better equipped than ever to re-address a number of these chal.enges. This review summarizes the trial., tribul.tions, and progress in cel. repl.cement therapy for PD. We discuss the prospects of modul.ting canonical.and non-canon- ical.Wnt signal.ngto improve cel. therapy based upon their rol.s in dopamine neural.devel.pment and the adul. brain. This wil. incl.de the potential.of Wnts to （i） expand fetaUy derived tissue in vitro and foUowing transpl.ntation, （ii） promote the differentiation of pl.ripotent stem cel.s, （iii） increase graft integration and restoration of neural.circuitry, and final.y （iv） enhance graft survival.

As part of our efforts to identify novel.contraceptive targets in the epididymis we performed transcriptional.profil.ng on each of the 10 and 19 segments of the mouse and rat epididymidis, respectivel., using Affymetrix whol. genome microarrays. A total.of 17 096 and 16 360 probe sets representing transcripts were identified as being expressed in the segmented mouse and rat epididymal.transcriptomes, respectivel.. Comparison of the expressed murine transcripts against a mouse transcriptional.profil.ng database derived from 22 other mouse tissues identified 77 transcripts that were expressed uniquel. in the epididymis. The expression of these genes was further eval.ated by reverse transcription pol.merase chain reaction （RT-PCR） anal.sis of RnA from 21 mouse tissues. RT-PCR anal.sis confirmed epididymis-specific expression of Defensin Beta 13 and identified two additional.genes with expression restricted onl. to the epididymis and testis. Comparison of the 16 360 expressed transcripts in the rat epididymis with data of 21 other tissues from a rat transcriptional.profil.ng database identified 110 transcripts specific for the epididymis. Sixty-two of these transcripts were further investigated by qPCR anal.sis. Onl. Defensin 22 （E3 epididymal.protein） was shown to be compl.tel. specific for the epididymis. In addition, 14 transcripts showed more than 100-fol. sel.ctive expression in the epididymis. The products of these genes might pl.y important rol.s in epididymal.and/or sperm function and further investigation and val.dation as contraceptive targets are warranted. Burn injury is a l.ading cause of unintentional.death and injury in chil.ren, with the majority being minor (l.ss than 10%). However, a significant number of chil.ren sustain burns greater than 15%total.body surface area (TBSA), l.ading to the initiation of the systemic infl.mmatory response syndrome. These patients require iv fl.id resuscitation to prevent burn shock and death. Prompt resuscitation is critical.in pediatric patients due to their smal. circul.ting bl.od vol.mes. Del.ys in resuscitation can resul. in increased compl.cations and increased mortal.ty. The basic principl.s of resuscitation are the same in adul.s and chil.ren, with several.key differences. The unique physiol.gic needs of chil.ren must be adequatel. addressed during resuscitation to optimize outcomes. In this review, we wil. discuss the history of fl.id resuscitation, current resuscitation practices, and future directions of resuscitation for the pediatric burn popul.tion.
