Evaluation of a concept-based physical education unit for energy balance education

Background:Physical education(PE)is a key channel that impacts children's decisions and behaviors for healthful *** study evaluated the effects of a concept-based PE(CBPE)instructional unit,featured by energy balance(EB)education,on students'knowledge learning,situational interest,cognitive,and physical engagements as well as teachers'***:Fourth and 5th grade students(n=468)in a mid-western state of the United States were recruited as the *** elementary schools were randomized to the CBPE or control ***'EB knowledge,situational interest,cognitive engagement,and physical engagement were measured by a knowledge test,the Situational Interest Scale—Elementary,written task sheets,and accelerometers,respectively,while teachers'perceptions of the CBPE unit were captured by individual interviews at the end of the ***:The CBPE group showed a significant increase in EB knowledge,while the control did *** groups showed a similar increasing trend for situational interest over time,although the statistical results favored the control *** physical engagement,the CBPE group demonstrated a statistically different but substantively similar level of in-class physical activity compared to the control *** CBPE group also showed a moderate level of cognitive engagement throughout the *** PE teachers reported overall positive perceptions about teaching the CBPE ***:These results support the utility of the CBPE unit in enhancing EB education along with facilitating positive student interest and engagement as well as positive teaching experiences.

A computational search for stable structures among bothαandβphases of ternary ATB4 borides(A=Mg,Ca,Sr,Ba,Al,Ga,and Zn,T is 3d or 4d transition elements)has been *** found thatα-ATB4 compounds with A=Mg,Ca,Al,and T=V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,and Co form a family of structurally stable or almost stable *** systems are metallic in non-magnetic states and characterized by the formation of the localized molecular-like state of 3d transition metal atom dimers,which leads to the appearance of numerous Van hove singularities in the electronic *** closeness of such singularities to the Fermi level can be easily tuned by electron *** the atoms in the middle of the 3d row(Cr,Mn,and Fe),these singularities led to magnetic instabilities and magnetic ground states with a weakly metallic or semiconducting *** states appear as non-trivial coexistence of the different spin ladders formed by magnetic dimers of 3d *** magnetic states can be characterized as an analog of the spin glass *** attempts to produce MgFeB4 and associated challenges are discussed,and promising directions for further synthetic studies are formulated.

The properties of Pbn（n=2―30） clusters including binding energies,second differences in energy,and hoMo-LUMo gaps,especially fragmentation energies and ionization potentials,have been studied by ab initio *** main fragmentation products of Pbn＋ are shown to be Pb＋Pbn-1＋ for n≤14 and two small cluster fragments for larger ones with *** Pb13＋ appears frequently as the products in the fragmentations of large ***,the calculated ionization potentials of the clusters are consistent with the experiment data.

Comparison of Si_n^+ and Ge_n^+(n=2―15) Cationic Structures

We designed and optimized a large number of the isomers of Si12＋ at the level of density functional theory （DFT）-B3LYP/6-311＋＋G（d） using the Gaussian 03 software package. An unambiguous structure of the Si12＋ cluster is presented, whose IR spectrum agrees well with the experiment result. The most stable geometric structures of Gen＋（n=2―15） clusters were determined by the all-electron PBE/DND method in DMol3 of the Material Studio Package, and compared with those of the corresponding Sin＋ geometries. Most structures of Gen＋ and Sin＋ are similar except the ones of those for n=9, 12, 13 and 14, and the pentagonal bipyramid motif and the tri-capped trigonal prism（TTP） motif often appear in the Sin＋ and Gen＋（n=7―15） structures（except for Si14＋）.

Glycogen storage disease type ia(GSD-ia)is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphatase-α(G6Pase-αor G6PC)that is expressed primarily in the liver,kidney,and intestine.G6Pase-αcatalyzes the hydrolysis of glucose-6-phosphate(G6P)to glucose and phosphate in the terminal step of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis,and is a key enzyme for endogenous glucose *** active site of G6Pase-αis inside the endoplasmic reticulum(ER)*** catalysis,the substrate G6P must be translocated from the cytoplasm into the ER lumen by a G6P transporter(G6PT).The functional coupling of G6Pase-αand G6PT maintains interprandial glucose *** therapies for GSD-ia are available,but cannot prevent the long-term complication of hepatocellular adenoma that may undergo malignant transformation to hepatocellular *** models of GSD-ia are now available and are being exploited to both delineate the disease more precisely and develop new treatment approaches,including gene therapy.

Ternary compounds with an immiscible pair of elements are relatively unexplored but promising for novel quantum materials *** what third element and its ratio that can be added to make stable ternary compounds out of an immiscible pair of elements remains a great *** this work,we combine a machine learning(ML)method with ab initio calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary La-Co-Pb compounds containing immiscible elements Co and *** previously reported structures are correctly captured by our ***,we predict a ground state La_(3)CoPb compound and 57 low-energy La-Co-Pb ternary *** to synthesize La_(3)CoPb via multiple techniques produce mixed or multi-phases samples with,at best,ambiguous signals of the predicted lowest-energy La_(3)CoPb and the second lowest-energy La_(18)Co_(28)Pb_(3)*** calculated results of Gibbs free energy are consistent with experiments,and will provide very useful guidance for further experimental synthesis.

Metal intercalation-induced selective adatom mass transport on graphene

Recent experiments indicate that metal intercalation is a very effective method to manipulate the graphene-adatom interaction and control metal nanostructure formation on graphene. A key question is mass transport, i.e., how atoms deposited uniformly on graphene populate different areas depending on the local intercalation. Using first-principles calculations, we show that partially intercalated graphene, with a mixture of intercalated and pristine areas, can induce an alternating electric field because of the spatial variations in electron doping, and thus, an oscillatory electrostatic potential. This alternating field can change normal stochastic adatom diffusion to biased diffusion, leading to selective mass transport and consequent nucleation, on either the intercalated or pristine areas, depending on the charge state of the adatoms.

Biological methane oxidation is a crucial process in the global carbon cycle that reduces methane emissions from paddy fields and natural wetlands into the ***,soil organic carbon accumulation associated with microbial methane oxidation is poorly ***,to investigate methane-derived carbon incorporation into soil organic matter,paddy soils originated from different parent materials(Inceptisol,Entisol,and Alfisol) were collected after rice harvesting from four major rice-producing regions in *** microcosm incubation with 5%(volume/volume)^(13) CH_(4),soil^(13) C-atom abundances significantly increased from background level of 1.08% to 1.88%–2.78%,leading to a net methane-derived accumulation of soil organic carbon ranging from 120 to 307 mg kg^(-1).Approximately 23.6%–60.0% of the methane consumed was converted to soil organic carbon during microbial methane *** phylogeny of^(13) C-labeled pmoA(enconding the alpha subunit of the particulate methane monooxygenase) and 16 S rRNA genes further revealed that canonical α(type II) and γ(type I) Proteobacteria were active methane *** within the Methylobacter-and Methylosarcina-affiliated type ia lineages dominated active methane-oxidizing communities that were responsible for the majority of methane-derived carbon accumulation in all three paddy soils,while Methylocystis-affiliated type Iia lineage was the key contributor in one paddy soil of Inceptisol *** results suggest that methanotroph-mediated synthesis of biomass plays an important role in soil organic matter *** study thus supports the concept that methanotrophs not only consume the greenhouse gas methane but also serve as a key biotic factor in maintaining soil fertility.

Right lower limb apraxia in a patient with left supplementary motor area infarction: intactness of the corticospinal tract confirmed by transcranial magnetic stimulation

We reported a 50-year-old female patient with left supplementary motor area infarction who presented right lower limb apraxia and investigated the possible causes using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The patient was able to walk and climb stairs spontaneously without any assistance at 3 weeks after onset. however, she was unable to intentionally move her right lower limb although she understood what she supposed to do. The motor evoked potential evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation from the right lower limb was within the normal range, indicating that the corticospinal tract innervating the right lower limb was uninjured. Thus, we thought that her motor dysfunction was not induced by motor weakness, and confirmed her symptoms as aprax- ia. In addition, these results also suggest that transcranial magnetic stimulation is helpful for diagnosing apraxia.
