Periodic Modulation of Nonlinearity in a Two-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber: A Numerical Investigation

We present a numerical investigation of the propagation and the switching of ultra-short pulses (100 fs) in a two-core nonlinear coupler of photonic crystal fibers constructed with periodically modulated the non-linearity fiber (PMNL-PFC). Our simulations are taking into account different amplitude and frequency modulations of the PMNL-PFC. A coupler for coupling whose length is Lc = 1.8 cm, the transmission characteristics, the compression factor, the crosstalk (Xtalk) and extinction ratio (Xratio) levels of the first order solitons were studied for low to high pump energies considering 2Lc. By an analysis on the reference channel (channel 2), it is observed that at low modulation frequencies an increase occurs in the switching power increasing transmission efficiency. For high modulation frequencies, the transmitted energy efficiency loses. The switching pulses are stronger for low frequency and high amplitude modulation. The Xtalk is a function of the measurement made on the secondary channel (channel 1). It was observed that this unwanted high-frequency energy increases to lessen the measure of the amplitude modulation. In summary, we have demonstrated that introduction of a non-linearity profile takes the periodically modulated PMNL-PFC to strong variations at transmission efficiency, Xtalk, Xratio a function of frequency and modulation amplitude and the input power.

AIM:To evaluate the effects of soy supplementation on insulin resistance,fatty liver and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) levels in non-diabetic patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODs:In a prospective,randomized and singleblinded clinical trial,we compared patients with CHC who had casein as a supplement(n = 80)(control group),with patients who consumed a soy supplement diet(n = 80) [intervention group(IG)].Both groups received 32 g/d of protein for 12 ***:Patients' baseline features showed that 48.1% were overweight,43.7% had abdominal fat accumulation,34.7% had hepatic steatosis and 36.3% had an homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance(HOMA-Ir) ≥ *** analysis showed that protein supplementation diet reduced hepatic steatosis in both groups;however,significant reductions in ALT levels occurred in the soy *** regression modeling indicated that in the presence of severe fibrosis(F3/F4),g glutamyl transferase elevation and high density lipoprotein(HDL) reduction,the intervention group had 75% less chance of developing hepatic steatosis(Or= 0.25;95% CI:0.06-0.82) and 55% less chance of presenting with an ALT level ≥ 1.5 × the upper limit of normal(ULN)(Or = 0.45,95% CI:0.22-0.89).soy treatment did not have any effect on insulin resistance(Or = 1.92;95% CI:0.80-4.83),which might be attributed to the fact that the HOMAIr values at baseline in most of our patients were in the normal *** hepatic fibrosis,an ALT level > 1.5 × ULN and visceral fat were predictors of an HOMA-Ir ≥ *** IG group had a reduced risk of an ALT level > 1.5 × *** HOMA-Ir ≥ 3.0 and HDL re also risk factors for increased ***:soy supplementation decreased ALT levels and thus may improve liver inflammation in hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients;it also reduced hepatic steatosis in a subgroup of patients but did not change insulin *** should be considered in the nutritional care of HCV patients.

目的:通过频域光学相干断层扫描(spectral-domain optical coherence tomography,sD-OCT)观测特发性黄斑裂孔患者对侧眼中心凹的形态结构变化。方法:将50例50眼研究对象分为两组:组1为25例特发性黄斑裂孔患者,组2为25位健康人(对照组)。使用rTVue 100(Optovue,Inc.,Fremont,CA,UsA)的"交叉十字"sD-OCT扫描模式,对所有研究对象进行黄斑中心凹广域B型方向扫描。通过卡尺工具测量二维横断面图上中心凹的形态面积。结果:组1中心凹形态面积为0.159±0.03mm2,组2为0.079±0.01mm2。两组比较,差异有统计学意义(P<0.001)。组1中有1例患者对侧眼产生黄斑裂孔。结论:同健康人相比,特发性黄斑裂孔患者的对侧眼中心凹形态有增大趋势。该发现结合其他的一些玻璃体黄斑的致病因素,可能导致特发性黄斑裂孔。

developments in Land Use and Land Cover Classification Techniques in remote sensing: A review

studies on land use and land cover changes (LULCC) have been a great concern due to their contribution to the policies formulation and strategic plans in different areas and at different scales. The LULCC when intense and on a global scale can be catastrophic if not detected and monitored affecting the key aspects of the ecosystem’s functions. For decades, technological developments and tools of geographic information systems (GIs), remote sensing (rs) and machine learning (ML) since data acquisition, processing and results in diffusion have been investigated to access landscape conditions and hence, different land use and land cover classification systems have been performed at different levels. Providing coherent guidelines, based on literature review, to examine, evaluate and spread such conditions could be a rich contribution. Therefore, hundreds of relevant studies available in different databases (science Direct, scopus, Google scholar) demonstrating advances achieved in local, regional and global land cover classification products at different spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions over the past decades were selected and investigated. This article aims to show the main tools, data, approaches applied for analysis, assessment, mapping and monitoring of LULCC and to investigate some associated challenges and limitations that may influence the performance of future works, through a progressive perspective. Based on this study, despite the advances archived in recent decades, issues related to multi-source, multi-temporal and multi-level analysis, robustness and quality, scalability need to be further studied as they constitute some of the main challenges for remote sensing.

To achieve a sustainable building＇s behaviour and preserve the environmental balance, three laws must be taken into account （l） the resources＇ consume must not be faster than the rate at which nature can restock them, （2） the creation of systems that consume maximum energy-quality and （3） the maximization of the use of renewable and recycled materials. Therefore, the buildings＇ rehabilitation process must increase, instead of the proliferation of new buildings, in order to provide the sustainability of the built environment and minimize its ecological impact. The sustainable rehabilitation process is even more difficult in historical areas, in general sited in central zones of the urban mesh, with fragile comfort conditions and a rigid structure. In this paper, different evaluation tools for sustainable buildings were analysed in order to provide a set of evaluation criteria to be applied in the rehabilitation process in historical zones.

The percentage of diabetic patients with contaminated lesions increases from 3% to 10%. Treatment with herbal products shows benefits in their use, as well as antioxidant and antifungal activities. Objective: to evaluate the antimicrobial action of 10% banana peel gel and the contraction of diabetic and venous wounds. Methods: individual, analytical, interventional, longitudinal, prospective, randomized study from February to december 2015. Five patients were included in the study;3 with venous ulcer and 2 with diabetic wound. Application of 10% green banana peel gel and weekly samples were performed. After six days, the second collection was performed. The samples were seeded in the Mannitol salt agar culture medium, MacConkey agar and saboraund agar with chloramphenicol for isolation of cocci and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacilli;and fungi. The total counts of bacteria were determined by PCA (Plate Count Agar) and measurement of the lesion margin. There was a reduction of microorganisms with the use of the gel in 53.57% of the patients, and reduction of wound areas in 48.1%.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes induced by isolated soy protein (IsP)-based diet on glycemia and oxidative stress biomarkers in diabetic rats. Fifteen male Wistar rats (35 ± 4 g, aged 21 days) were assigned to three groups: Casein (C group), which received casein-based diet during experimental protocol;Diabetic treated with Casein (D + C group) that received casein-based diet before and after diabetes induction;Diabetic treated with IsP (D + s group) that received casein-based diet before diabetes induction and after received IsP-based diet for the experimental protocol. Diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body weight i.v.). After three weeks of dietary treatment, total nitrates, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (sOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-s-transferase (GsT) were measured in heart homogenates. IsP-based diet promoted an improvement in the glycemic levels of diabetic rats compared with casein-based diet (362 ± 25 vs 461 ± 30 mg/dL). CAT activity demonstrated a significant decrease in D + C and D + s groups. D + s group presented a significant increase in sOD and GsT activities. Lipid peroxidation was not different among experimental groups. The overall results suggested the potential benefits of IsP-based diet consumption to improve the life quality of diabetic patients.

BACKGrOUNDPercutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting represent an effectivetreatment for hepatic artery stenosis after liver transplantation. In the first yearafter stenting, approximately 22% of patients experience in-stent restenosis,increasing the risk of artery thrombosis and related complications, and 50%experience liver failure. Although angiography is an important tool for diagnosisand the planning of therapeutic interventions, it may raise doubts, especially insmall-diameter arteries, and it provides low resolution rates compared withnewer intravascular imaging methods, such as optical coherence tomography(OCT).CAsE sUMMArYA 64-year-old male developed hepatic artery stenosis one year after orthotropicliver transplantation and was successfully treated with percutaneous transluminalangioplasty with stenting. Five months later, the Doppler ultrasound resultsindicated restenosis. Visceral arteriography confirmed hepatic artery tortuositybut was doubtful for significant in-stent restenosis (Isr) and intrahepatic flowreduction. To confirm Isr, identify the etiology and guide treatment, OCT wasperformed. OCT showed severe stenosis due to four mechanisms: Focal andpartial stent fracture, late stent malapposition, in-stent neointimal hyperplasia,and *** diagnostic methods can be useful in evaluating cases in which initialangiography results are not sufficient to provide a proper diagnosis of significantstenosis, especially with regard to Isr. A wide range of diagnoses are provided byOCT, resulting in different treatment options. Interventional radiologists shouldconsider intravascular diagnostic methods as additional tools for evaluatingpatients when visceral angiography results are unclear.
