Evaluation of the Nutritional Quality of Red and Refined Palm Oils Marketed in Yamoussoukro (Côte d’Ivoire)

In order to define the nutritional quality of commercialized red and refined palm oils, palm oil samples conditioned or not with aluminum foils were placed in solar radiation for four weeks. Each week, the levels of peroxides, free and unsaturated fatty acids and then vitamins A and E were determined. From these analyzes, the proportions of peroxides and free fatty acids increased with solar exposure time of the oils. these rates ranged from 0.11 to 24.00 meq O2/Kg (peroxides) and from 1.11 to 17.14 KOH/g (free fatty acids). Also, iodine index levels of palm oils decreased during sun exposure “95.11 - 3.22 g I/100 g”. In addition, vitamin A and E losses from palm oil samples increased with exposure time. these losses ranged from 0% to 94.49% for vitamin A and from 0% to 83.42% for vitamin E from the day of purchase of oils in the fourth week of sun exposure. However, the deterioration of nutritional quality was greater with red and refined palm oil samples unprotected with aluminum foils than those protected.

In this work, we have used multispectral imaging technology to classify cassava leaves infected by African mosaic virus by the use of their unique spectral finger print. the spectra are extracted from transmission, reflection and diffusion of their multispectral images;they have been then analyzed with statistical multivariate analysis techniques. Principal component analysis (PCA) has been used followed by K-means and Ascending Hierarchical Classification (AHC) to endorse the classification. the contribution of this work is the use of multispectral imagery which binds both spatial and spectral information to differentiate and sort infected leaves. the results show that the multimodal and imaging spectroscopy may allow blind identification and characterization of infected leaves.

Introduction: Rabies is endemic and constitutes a public health problem in Côte d’Ivoire. In the health districts of Kong and Ferkessedougou, exposure to rabies infection reported by the National Institute of Public Hygiene of Ferkessedougou averages 200 cases per year. However, in the involvement of health workers from First Contact Health Establishments (FCHE) of the 2 Districts, the management of exposed persons is unknown. this study aimed to determine the involvement of healthcare personnel in FCHE in the health districts of Ferkessedougou and Kong in the elimination of human rabies. Material and Methods: this was a prospective cross-sectional study with a descriptive aim which took place from October 21, 2020 to November 20, 2020. the data were collected using a questionnaire and then analyzed with the software EXCEL and Epi Info 3.5.3. Principle Results: It emerged from this study that the average age of the participants was 36.8 years with an average professional seniority of 5.07 years. the majority (73.90%) of healthcare staff have not received training on rabies. However, plenty of healthcare personnel respectively experienced the transmission of the rabies virus from animals to humans (98.60%), with dogs (97.10%) as the main animal vector of rabies to man, the bite (100%) as the way of contamination of rabies, the immediate washing with water and soap (66.70%), the administration of the anti-rabies vaccine (75.4%), the National Institute of Public Hygiene as a reference structure (63.8%). the population of northern Côte d’Ivoire, especially in the white Bandama watershed, lives for majority in rural areas and depends on farming, which is mainly linked to climate variability. this study evaluates the trends within watershed’s hydro-climatic variables and their level of significance over the period 1950-2000. the methodological approach consists in applying successively standardized indexes to detect trends and breaks in hydro-climatic long-term data. the Mann-Kendall statistical test lets us know the trends significance and the Kendall-theil Robust Line test reveals their magnitude. the Student’s t test underlines break years. Results show that although rainfall has decreased, this decline is not statistically significant. However, temperature and potential evapotranspiration have strongly rised and discharge was submitted to high decline. these changes in hydrometeorological variables appeared from 1970 to 1980. this study is different from others conducted on climate variability in the northern Côte d’Ivoire by the methodological statistical framework implemented and the understanding of significance level of climate trends. Until now, authors used the standardized index to detect trends in hydro-climatic parameters. For this work, we added the Mann-Kendall statistical test to assess the significance level of these trends at α = 5% and 10%. then, the Kendall-theil statistical test was used to highlight the trends magnitude and the student’s t test to know the break years.

Using Water Quality Index for Assessing of Physicochemical Quality of Quaternary Groundwater in the Southern Part of Abidjan District (Côte d’Ivoire)

In this study, fourteen physicochemical parameters were monitored at 61 groundwater sampling points located in the southern part of Abidjan District. Each water sampling location was sampled in March and July 2007, representing respectively the long dry season and the long wet season. Groundwater evaluation index and statistical methods were used to assess Quaternary groundwater physicochemical quality in term of drinking and irrigation purposes. the groundwater samples irrespective of seasons fell in mixed K-Na-HCO3 and K-Na-Cl types. Groundwater quality index values varied from 14.01 to 593.44 and from 20.88 to 567.44, in dry and rainy seasons, respectively. In both seasons, 9.83% exhibited poor water quality and 3.27% indicated unsuitable water for drinking purposes. the studied water wells were heavily contaminated with nitrate, nitrite and ammonium in the strongly urbanized areas at treichville, Koumassi, Marcory, Port-Bou?t and Grand-Bassam. the degree of correlation between physicochemical parameters suggested that groundwater quality was mainly related to geogenic (rock–water interaction) and anthropogenic sources (domestic sewage), and intrusion of marine and lagoon waters in the study area. Sodium adsorption ratio was generally low during study period, indicating most groundwater sampled was suitable for irrigation purposes.

Assessment of Meteorological Drought in Climate Variability Context within the Comoe River transboundary Watershed

In the context of climate variability resulting in a decrease in rainfall with a severe drought, a spatio-temporal study of this phenomenon remains imperative for the efficient management of water resources. this paper aims to assess the long-term rainfall drought trend and breakpoints within the Comoe River watershed. From monthly rainfall data series (1960-2000), Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) values were calculated for a time scale of 3 months (SPI.3). Statistical tests for breaks (CUSUM, and t-Student) and trends (Man-Kendall and Linear Regression) as well as the Sen’ slope method for estimating the magnitude of trends was applied. The breaks dates observed are mostly located after the 1970s. Based on SPI.3 values below the threshold of 0.84 chosen as an indicator of drought, rarely has more than half of the catchment area been affected by drought. The average watershed affected is about 20% over the study period (1960-2000). The most representative years, in terms of spatial expansion of the drought, in decreasing order of importance are: 1983, 1992, 1972 and 1982. The years 1982 and 1983 stand out for their exceptional condition, as the drought-affected 50% to 90% of the total catchment area. SPI.3 series from 1960 to the various break dates recorded slopes between -0.01 and 0.00 with a slight drought trend for most of the catchment. After the break periods, almost the entire northern part of the basin is characterized by slight moisture with Sen’s slopes between 0.000 and 0.005. the southern part will remain slightly subject to normal rainfall conditions.

the decadal variability of rainfall and vegetation over West Africa have been studied over the last three decades, 1981-1990, 1991-2000 and 2001-2010 denoted as 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, respectively. Climate Research Unit (CRU) monthly precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA), all covering the period 1981-2010 have been used. this study aimed to assess the changes in the land surface condition and the spatio-temporal distribution of rainfall over West Africa region. the relationship between rainfall and vegetation indices over this region was determined using Pearson’s correlation. Also, the decadal comparison between rainfall and NDVI over the region was based on the significant t-test and the Pearson’s correlation. Results showed that significant return to wet conditions is observed between decade 1980s and decade 1990s over West Africa, and also during decade 2000s with the exception of central Benin and the western Nigeria. Meanwhile, a regreening of the central Sahel and Sudano-Sahel regions is noted. From 1990s to 2000s, this regreening belt is located in the South and the coastal areas: the Guinea Coast, Sudano-Guinea and western Sahel regions. A northward displacement of this re-greening belt is also detected. thus, a linear relationship occurs between rainfall and NDVI in the Sudanian savannah region, but it is not the case in the rest of West Africa. this may suggest that the re-growth of vegetation in the Sudanian savannah region may be linked to rainfall supplies. therefore, re-greening over Sahel region in 1990s is related to rainfall recovery. However, this re-greening was not sustained in the decade 2000s due to a slight decrease in rainfall.

Mapping of Malaria Risk Related to Climatic and Environmental Factors by Multicriteria Analysis in the MarahouéRegion of Côte d’Ivoire

Malaria, a febrile human disease transmitted by female anopheles whose ecology is linked to water, is a major public health problem in Côte d’Ivoire, more precisely in the Marahoué region located in the southwest of the country. In order to effectively control this disease, it is necessary to understand the etiology and the diffusion pattern of the vectors. this justifies this study, which proposes to determine the areas at risk of malaria transmission in order to carry out an effective fight against this disease in this region of Côte d’Ivoire. to achieve this, a combined approach of geographic information systems and multicriteria analysis was adopted. the analysis reveals that the south and northwest of the Marahoué region present a high risk for malaria transmission. this risk is linked to indicators such as climatic factors that cover 48.36% of the study area, environmental factors such as vegetation cover (NDVI), soil moisture (NDWI), altitude, hydrography (water point) and population that covers 55.29% of the area and land use. Also, the results indicated that 50.70% of the region has favorable conditions for malaria transmission. Overall, climatic and environmental indicators are the risk factors associated with the resurgence of malaria.

Introduction: Diet is a determinant of chronic non transmissible diseases. the aim of this study was to describe pupils’ diet in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso). Methods: this was a descriptive cross-sectional study that took place from March to April 2016, among 1st, 4th and 7th form pupils of public and private schools in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso. Diet survey methods were a reminder of the last 24 hours and the questionnaire of consumption frequency. Results: A total of 1993 pupils were surveyed. the mean age was 17.5 ± 3.6 years and the sex ratio 0.7. the majority of pupils (90.5%) reported eating at least 3 meals a day. Dietary recommendations were different according to food groups. For example, vegetables (90.0%), fruits (75.4%) and dairy products (79.3%) were the least well consumed foods compared to recommendations. Protein and starch intake were inadequate among these pupils with 39.7% and 58.2% respectively. Almost 1/4 had a regular weekly alcohol consumption (23.4%) while an excessive consumption of sweet drinks and fried foods was noted in 12.7% and 28.2% of them, respectively. Conclusion: this study has revealed a general insufficiency in the recommended dietary intakes of fruit, vegetables, proteins, starchy foods and dairy products among pupils, and on the other hand, a regular consumption of fatty, sugary and alcoholic foods for about a fifth of them. An intervention program such as “Communication for Continuous Behavior Change” would help improve these habits.
