Physico-Chemical and Labeling Control of Imported Honeys in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is situated in the centre of Western Africa with a high illiteracy rate, despite efforts of the governments to improve education. This is not without consequences on the choice of foodstuffs bought and consumed by the people and the consequent effect on their health. Honey is one of the foodstuffs consumed by people. However local production falls short of demand, and so most supermarkets in Burkina Faso sell imported honey. Do these imported honeys conform to the international standards regarding labeling of foodstuffs, and specifically do they possess physicochemical characteristics that conform to international norms of Codex Alimentarus and European honey Commission? The study investigated certain characteristics established by standards of the European Commission and Codex Alimentarius. The labels on packaged honey were analyzed according to the standard of Journal Officiel. Results show that the physic-chemical plan, the hydroxyl-methyl-furfural (HMF) content were high whereas the diastase index was low indicating lack of freshness of imported honeys. For the stability, honey samples conformed to the standard of the European Commission and Codex Alimentarius. Only two honey samples fulfill the Codex Alimentarius and the European commission norms. Storage temperatures degrade honey considerably and it suggested that under tropical conditions the deadline for optimal use (DLUO) of honeys is reduced to one year.

Plants used in traditional beekeeping in Burkina Faso

Beekeeping is one of the recommended approaches in the implementation of poverty alleviation programs in rural areas of Burkina Faso. However, plants that are important in beekeeping have not been identified. The use of parts and organs of plants by beekeepers and their methods of harvesting remain unknown. These limit the conservation efforts of these important plants and affect beekeeping development. The study was carried out in the south-central, eastcentral regions and in Comoé and Boucle of Mouhoun regions ofBurkina Faso. The objective of the study was to identify the plants species used by traditional beekeepers, the different uses made of these plant parts and organs and then to discuss the impact of these activities on the survival of the plant resources. An ethnoapiculture survey was conducted in the main apiculture zone of Burkina Faso, using semi-structured interviews. The methodology of botanical coherence or convergence was applied to classify botanical species. Results showed that 35 botanical species were used in traditional beekeeping. The use of plant parts or organs in traditional hives construction represents 55%, attraction of wild swarms in new beehives is 37.50% and use as a torch or as a smoker, 7.50%. The barks are the organs most used. Trees are botanical type most used. The results are not exhaustive and therefore other additional studies need to be carried out. In order to sustain the use of these important plants, their growing in nursery and their planting in the field are recommended.

Shea tree is a major economic plant contributing to household income through the sale of edible fruits, kernels and shea butter. Shea butter is used industrially in the production of cosmetic products, chocolates and margarines. Fruits are used by human and also by birds. This study aimed to explore strategies for the improvement of shea yield through pollination. Two types of pollination (manual and natural pollination) were applied for the comparison of fruits set and their ripening. The fruits set and ripening index as well as average weight of ripe fruits and kernels were estimated. The results showed a significant difference between the fruits set Index of manual pollination and natural pollination (H(1) = 33.437, p = 7.361 × 10-9). Similarly, there was a significant difference between the ripening Index of manual pollination and natural pollination (H(1) = 4.5113, p = 0.03367). However, the mode of pollination did not influence the weight of ripe fruits and kernels. Therefore, the manual pollination enhances pollen supply to receptive stigmas for fertilization and improved fruit yield in Vitellaria paradoxa.

BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is a formidable global health issue,particularly affecting women in lower-middle-income countries with little or no access to preventative vaccines,screening programs,and treatment *** case report presents a unique case of a large cervical cancer achieving complete response(CR)with concurrent chemoradiotherapy(CCRT),highlighting the effectiveness of this treatment approach even in advanced stages and underscoring the importance of adaptive radiotherapy(RT)in optimizing patient *** SUMMARY We present the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with four years of abnormal vaginal bleeding and was found to have p16-positive,moderately differentiated cervical squamous cell *** tumor measured 14 cm×12 cm×8 cm,the largest size reported in the literature to achieve CR with *** this monumental feat,the patient remained disease-free and is currently on follow-up for 2 years;however,she continued to suffer from substantial morbidity caused by a vesicovaginal fistula and hydronephrosis,underscoring the continuing impact of cervical cancer on quality of *** In this case report,we highlight the effectiveness of CCRT in achieving CR,even in cases of bulky cervical cancer,with adaptive RT offering a customized strategy to improve patient *** also emphasize the necessity for multidisciplinary team discussions and highlight the need for strategies to mitigate treatment-related toxicities and long-term complications.

Physics-informed machine learning for metamodeling thermal comfort in non-air-conditioned buildings

There is a growing need for accurate and interpretable machine learning models of thermal comfort in ***-informed machine learning could address this need by adding physical consistency to such *** paper presents metamodeling of thermal comfort in non-air-conditioned buildings using physics-informed machine *** studied metamodel incorporated knowledge of both quasi-steady-state heat transfer and dynamic simulation *** thermal comfort in an office located in cold and hot European climates was studied with the number of overheating hours as index.A one-at-a-time method was used to gain knowledge from dynamic simulation with TRNSYS *** knowledge was used to filter the training data and to choose probability distributions for metamodel forms alternative to *** response of the dynamic model was positively skewed;and thus,the symmetric logistic and hyperbolic secant distributions were inappropriate and outperformed by positively skewed *** physical knowledge into the metamodel was much more effective than doubling the size of the training *** highly flexible Kumaraswamy distribution provided the best performance with R2 equal to 0.9994 for the cold climate and 0.9975 for the hot ***-informed machine learning could combine the strength of both physics and machine learning models,and could therefore support building design with flexible,accurate and interpretable metamodels.

A Review on Thermophysical Properties and Nusselt Number Behavior of Al2O3 Nanofluids in Heat Exchangers

During the last several years,the increase in cooling power requirements for heat exchangers have led to an escalation in heat transfer studies being performed on the use of nanofluids as heat transfer ***,limited effort has been attempted to relate and interpret these findings or the anomalies associated with *** paper compiles test data from several studies conducted on different types of heat *** this review,a concentrated effort is spent to clarify the ambiguities regarding the effect of nanoparticle size on the nanofluid thermal conductivity and Nusselt *** show that the nanofluid thermal conductivity is not influenced by the nanoparticle size,but by the clustering of the particles *** less compact the structure of the nanoparticle clustering is,the greater the enhancement in the nanofluid thermal conductivity *** were also compiled to interpret the relation between the nanofluid flow pattern,nanoparticles volume fraction in the base fluid,and the convective heat *** results from the majority of the heat exchanger studies show an increase in the heat transfer coefficient with the increase in nanoparticle volume ***,studies conducted on plate heat exchanges display some *** the majority of the heat exchanger studies with the exception of few,the decrease in the nanoparticle size is shown to result in an enhancement of the bulk fluid Nusselt *** test data also reveal that the effectiveness of the alumina nanoparticles is dependent on the flow *** increase in the nanoparticles concentration is shown to result in an increase in the nanofluid heat transfer enhancement as the fluid is transitioning from laminar to turbulent *** general,the smaller the nanoparticle size is,the greater the enhancement in the fluid Nusselt number is.

Heat Transfer Optimization for Air-Mist Cooling between a Stack of Parallel Plates

A theoretical model is developed to predict the upper limit heat transfer between a stack of parallel plates subject to multiphase cooling by air-mist *** model predicts the optimal separation distance between the plates based on the development of the boundary layers for small and large separation distances,and for dilute mist *** results show the optimal separation distance to be strongly dependent on the liquid-to-air mass flow rate loading ratio,and reach a limit for a critical *** these dilute spray conditions,complete evaporation of the droplets takes *** results also show the optimal separation distance decreases with the increase in the mist flow *** proposed theoretical model shall lead to a better understanding of the design of fins spacing in heat exchangers where multiphase spray cooling is used.

Physical modeling of behaviors of cast-in-place concrete piled raft compared to free-standing pile group in sand

Similar to free-standing pile groups, piled raft foundations are conventionally designed in which the piles carry the total load of structure and the raft bearing capacity is not taken into account. Numerous studies indicated that this method is too conservative. Only when the pile cap is elevated from the ground level,the raft bearing contribution can be neglected. In a piled raft foundation, pileesoileraft interaction is complicated. Although several numerical studies have been carried out to analyze the behaviors of piled raft foundations, very few experimental studies are reported in the literature. The available laboratory studies mainly focused on steel piles. The present study aims to compare the behaviors of piled raft foundations with free-standing pile groups in sand, using laboratory physical models. Cast-in-place concrete piles and concrete raft are used for the tests. The tests are conducted on single pile, single pile in pile group, unpiled raft, free-standing pile group and piled raft foundation. We examine the effects of the number of piles, the pile installation method and the interaction between different components of foundation. The results indicate that the ultimate bearing capacity of the piled raft foundation is considerably higher than that of the free-standing pile group with the same number of piles. With installation of the single pile in the group, the pile bearing capacity and stiffness increase. Installation of the piles beneath the raft decreases the bearing capacity of the raft. When the raft bearing capacity is not included in the design process, the allowable bearing capacity of the piled raft is underestimated by more than 200%. This deviation intensifies with increasing spacing of the piles.

Pulmonary Diseases Decision Support System Using Deep Learning Approach

Pulmonary diseases are common throughout the world,especially in developing *** diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases,pneumonia,asthma,tuberculosis,fibrosis,and recently *** general,pulmonary diseases have a similar footprint on chest radiographs which makes them difficult to discriminate even for expert *** recent years,many image processing techniques and artificial intelligence models have been developed to quickly and accurately diagnose lung *** this paper,the performance of four popular pretrained models(namely VGG16,DenseNet201,DarkNet19,and XceptionNet)in distinguishing between different pulmonary diseases was *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first published study to ever attempt to distinguish all four cases normal,pneumonia,COVID-19 and lung opacity from ChestX-Ray(CXR)*** models were trained using Chest-X-Ray(CXR)images,and statistically tested using 5-fold cross *** individual models,XceptionNet outperformed all other models with a 94.775%accuracy and Area Under the Curve(AUC)of Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC)of 99.84%.On the other hand,DarkNet19 represents a good compromise between accuracy,fast convergence,resource utilization,and near real time detection(0.33 s).Using a collection of models,the 97.79%accuracy achieved by Ensemble Features was the highest among all surveyed methods,but it takes the longest time to predict an image(5.68 s).An efficient effective decision support system can be developed using one of those approaches to assist radiologists in the field make the right assessment in terms of accuracy and prediction time,such a dependable system can be used in rural areas and various healthcare sectors.
