The aim of this study was to evaluate injectable,in situ cross-linkable elastin-like recombinamers(ELRs)for osteochondral *** the ELR-based hydrogel alone and the ELR-based hydrogel embedded with rabbit mesenchymal stromal cells(rMSCs)were tested for the regeneration of critical subchondral defects in 10 New Zealand ***,cylindrical osteochondral defects were filled with an aqueous solution of ELRs and the animals sacrificed at 4months for histological and gross evaluation of features of biomaterial performance,including integration,cellular infiltration,surrounding matrix quality and the new matrix in the *** both approaches helped cartilage regeneration,the results suggest that the specific composition of the rMSC-containing hydrogel permitted adequate bone regeneration,whereas the ELR-based hydrogel alone led to an excellent regeneration of hyaline *** conclusion,the ELR cross-linker solution can be easily delivered and forms a stable well-integrated hydrogel that supports infiltration and de novo matrix synthesis.

Effect of homogenization process on the hardness of Zn-Al-Cu alloys

The effect of a homogenizing treatment on the hardness of as-cast Zn–Al–Cu alloys was investigated. Eight alloy compositions were prepared and homogenized at 350 °C for 180 h, and their Rockwell 'B' hardness was subsequently measured. All the specimens were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and metallographically prepared for observation by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results of the present work indicated that the hardness of both alloys(as-cast and homogenized) increased with increasing Al and Cu contents; this increased hardness is likely related to the presence of the θ and τ′ phases. A regression equation was obtained to determine the hardness of the homogenized alloys as a function of their chemical composition and processing parameters, such as homogenization time and temperature, used in their preparation.

In turbulence modeling, the RNG and Realizable models have important improvements in the turbulent production and dissipation terms in comparison to the Standard. The selection of the appropriate turbulence model has an impact on the convergence and solution in STRs, and they are used in mixing, multiphase modeling or as starting solution of transient models as deS and LES. Although there are several studies with the pitched blade turbine(PBT) impeller, most of them used the Standard model as representative of all k–ε models, using structured hexahedral grids composed of low number of cells, and in some cases under axial symmetry ***, in this work the assessment of the Standard, RNG and Realizable models to describe the turbulent flow field of this impeller, using the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) and Sliding Mesh(SM) approaches with tetrahedral domains in dense grids, is presented. This kind of cell elements is especially suitable to reproduce complex geometries. Flow velocities and turbulent parameters were verified experimentally by PIV and torque measurements. The three models were capable of predicting fairly the pumping number, the power number based on torque, and velocities. Although the RNG improved the predictions of the turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate, the Realizable model presented better performance for both approaches. All models failed in the prediction of the total dissipation rate, and a dependence of its value on the number of cells for the MRF was found.

Background: A left ventricular aneurysm is a mechanical complication of a myocardial infarction that frequently develops on the anterior and apical wall. Survival of 3 to 5 years is 27% and 12%, respectively. Our objective is to report 3 cases of ventricular aneurysms in atypical locations and analyze the survival of these patients. Material and Methods: Three patients with suspicion of ventricular aneurysm after acute myocardial infarction who sought?attention at our institution were included. All underwent transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE), cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), nuclear cardiology (NC),?coronary angiotomography and cardiac catheterization to assess the location and characteristics of the aneurysms, left ventricular systolic function and the?anatomical and functional condition of the coronary arteries. Results: The mean age of studied patients was 58.33 ± 10.37 years. The locations of the ventricular aneurysms were lateral, inferior and septal. The patients received optimal medical treatment to control heart failure and were discharged in stable condition without early mortality. The mean follow-up was 6.33 years (intervals: 2 - 9) and during this period the patients were in NYHA functional class I/II. Conclusion: Left ventricular aneurysm is a late mechanical complication of an infarction that can develop in an atypical location. Diagnosis is achieved using non-invasive techniques such as TTE, CMR, NC, and coronary angiotomography. No mortality occurred among the patients during medium and long-term follow-up.

Impact of inflammatory bowel disease activity and thiopurine therapy on birth weight: A meta-analysis

AIM To investigate the effect of disease activity or thiopurine use on low birth weight and small for gestational age in women with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS Selection criteria included all relevant articles on the effect of disease activity or thiopurine use on the risk of low birth weight(LBW) or small for gestational age(SGA) among pregnant women with IBD. Sixtynine abstracts were identified,35 papers were full text reviewed and,only 14 of them met inclusion criteria. Raw data were extracted to generate the relative risk of LBW or SGA. Quality was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa *** This meta-analysis is reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Fourteen studies met inclusion criteria,and nine reported raw data suitable for meta-analysis. We found an increased risk ratio of both SGA and LBW in women with active IBD,when compared with women in remission: 1.3 for SGA(4 studies,95%CI: 1.0-1.6,P = 0.04) and 2.0 for LBW(4 studies,95%CI: 1.5-2.7,P dered in treatment decisions during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy,with resulting cardiac dysfunction and exercise *** minute walking test(6MWT)assesses functional status and predicts morbidity and mortality in cardiopulmonary *** To determine if it associates with mortality by analyzing 6MWT performance in patients with liver *** A cohort of 106 cirrhotic patients was evaluated in the outpatient setting with echocardiogram and 6MWT and follow up for one year to document hepatic decompensation and *** distance in meters was recorded at the end of 6 min(6MWD).RESULTS This cohort had a mean age of 51 years and 56%male;patients were staged as Child A in 21.7%,B 66%and C 12.3%.Walk distance inversely correlated with Child scores,and was significantly reduced as Child stages *** who died(10.4%)showed shorter mean 6MWD(P=0.006).Low 6MWD was an independent predictor of mortality(P=0.01).CONCLUSION 6MWT is a noninvasive inexpensive test whose result is related to Child scores and *** is useful to identify patients with liver cirrhosis at high risk of mortality for closer monitoring and potential early intervention.
