Geostatistical modelling and mapping of nematode-based soil ecological quality indices in a polluted nature reserve

Nematodes are indicators of soil quality and soil *** of the relationships between nematode-based soil quality indices and environmental properties is beneficial for assessing environmental threats on soil *** study evaluated the spatial distribution of nematode-based soil quality indices in a 23-ha heavy metal-polluted nature reserve using geostatistical *** expected that a selection of abiotic soil properties(pH and moisture,clay,organic matter,cadmium(Cd),and zinc(Zn)contents)could explain a significant portion of the spatial variation of the indices and that regression kriging could more accurately model their spatial distribution than ordinary kriging.A stratified simple random sampling scheme was used to select 80 locations where soil samples were taken to extract nematodes and derive the *** area had a distinct gradient in soil properties with Cd and Zn content ranging from 0.07 to 68.9 and 5.3 to 1329 mg kg^(-1),*** regression models were fitted to describe the relationships between the indices and soil *** also modelling the spatial correlation structure of regression residuals using spherical semivariograms,regression kriging was used to produce maps of the *** regression models explained between 21% and 44% of the total original variance in the *** pH was a significant explanatory variable in almost all cases,while heavy metal conent had a remarkably low *** some cases,the regression residuals had spatial *** validation indicated that in all cases,regression kriging performed slightly better because of having lower values of the root mean square prediction error and a mean prediction error closer to zero than ordinary *** study showed the importance of soil properties in explaining the spatial distribution of biological soil quality indices in ecological risk assessment.

This study investigated efficiency of tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide pentahydrate(TMAH)in removal of heavy metal ions from heavy oils obtained from Nigerian oil sands by Soxhlet-extraction *** were removed from the heavy oils at variable temperatures using *** analysis was done using Atomic absorption spectrophotometry(AAS).Percentage recovery was≥92.85%,confirming reliability of *** metal concentrations followed order:Ni>Pb>Mn>Cu>Cr>*** of variance results showed that Fof null *** analysis result indicated three major inter-elemental clustering groups,indicating chemical affinity and/or similar sources,while T-test result indicated significant *** removal efficiency decreased with increased temperature,indicating exothermic *** parameter values were negative,confirming exothermic ***,negative△DS°values indicated decreased randomness at solid/liquid interface during the extraction.△DG°negative values indicated feasible and spontaneous ***,the distribution of metals in the analyzed heavy oils followed similar trend,due to similarity in their geological activity,source rock type,maturation and depositional *** parameters values showed the extraction process was exothermic,feasible and spontaneous thus,proving metal extraction using TMAH to be efficient.

Infants at risk of significant hyperbilirubinemia in poorly-resourced countries:evidence from a scoping review

Background:Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is frequently associated with disproportionately high rates of bilirubin-induced mortality and long-term morbidities in low-and middle-income countries(LMICs).This scoping review aimed to identify possible et iological/risk factors for clinically significant hyperbilirubinemia in LMICs so as to guide intervention and future research *** sources:We systematically searched PubMed,Scopus,Excerpt Medica Database,Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature,WHo Library Database,African Index Medicus,African Journals online,Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature,and Indian Medical Journals for reports published between January 1990 and August 2014 in LMICs with per capita income of≤US$*** included studies on the etiology of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia or hyperbilirubinemia as signifi cant morbidity for relevant maternal,perinatal and neonatal disorders without restriction on study ***:A total of 131 studies were identified in 23 LMICs from different regions of the *** factors most frequently associated with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia(in approximately 10%of all studies)were ABo and Rhesus incompatibilities,diabetes mellitus,glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase defi ciency,prematurity/low birth weight,infection,birth trauma,and drug-induced *** role of exclusive breast-feeding and genetic factors was sparsely ***:Several maternal,perinatal and neonatal factors are associated with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in *** research efforts and strategies to address these factors are warranted to curtail the disease burden in these countries.

Dispersal Patterns of the Late Cretaceous to Early-Tertiary Sediments in the Southern Anambra Basin, Southeastern Nigeria

The dispersal patterns of the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary sediments in southern Anambra Basin were studied to delineate spatial facies distributions for improved mapping and hydrocarbon prospectivity. Seven lithofacies distinguished from eleven outcrop sections aided the interpretation of depositional environments for the different depositional units. Interpreted paleoenvironments ranged from estuarine/lagoonal to tidal delta and shallow marine depositional environments. Sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the deposits using vertical relationships between the delineated facies and foraminiferal and palynofacies assemblages and the interpreted environmental setting identified two complete sequences (SEQ-1 and -2) and two incomplete sequences (SEQ-3 and -4) in the study area. The sequiences are enveloped by three Type-1 Sequence Boundaries (SB), two Transgressive Surfaces of Erosion (TSE) and four Maximum Flooding Surfaces (MFS). The identified surfaces were used to delineate formation boundaries and as such would assist in the improved mapping of the Anambra Basin and adjoining depocenters. The massive sand units of the Highstand and Transgressive Systems Tracts constitute good (potential) reservoirs, while the transgressive shales would constitute seals for potential traps in the study area. The delineation of these petroleum system elements, especially those associated with the Transgressive and Highstand Systems Tracts has conferred great hydrocarbon prospectivity potential on the sedimentary sequences in the Basin. The absence of deep marine and slope complexes of the Lowstand Systems Tract (LST) in the interpreted sequences is indicative that the study area is the up-dip section of the Anambra Basin.

ong>Background:ong> Worldwide, the burden of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors is rising with devastating impacts on the productive workforce. In developing nations, it has further led to an unstable population pyramid as a result of premature deaths of her workforce leading to the continued tapering of the pyramidal apex. Inspite of this, many studies were conducted among the general population neglecting the local government civil servants who are seen as policy implementers. Therefore, the study assessed the pattern of CV risk factors in South-western Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 local government workers selected by multistage sampling technique from July to September 2017. A pretested, interviewer-administered questionnaire was administered to obtain socio-demographic and behavioural information. Lipid analysis, anthropometric, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose measurements were done according to protocols. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25;bivariate analysis was done using Chi-square. Level of significance was at 5%. Results: The mean age of respondents was 46.0 ± 6.7 years. The proportion of participants with good knowledge of risk factors was 57.7%. The proportion of respondent with hypertension, visceral obesity, general obesity, diabetes, smoking and physical inactivity was 40.4%, 35.0%, 52.2%, 38.2%, 5.8% and 75.8% respectively.
