A lateral ankle sprain during a lateral backward step in badminton:A case report of a televised injury incident

Background:This study presents a kinematic analysis of an acute lateral ankle sprain incurred during a televised badminton *** kinematics of this injury were compared to those of 19 previously reported cases in the published ***:Four camera views of an acute lateral ankle sprain incurred during a televised badminton match were synchronized and rendered in3-dimensional animation software.A badminton court with known dimensions was built in a virtual environment,and a skeletal model scaled to the inj ured athlete’s height was used for skeletal *** ankle joint angle and angular velocity profiles of this acute injury were compared to the summarized findings from 19 previously reported cases in the published ***:At foot strike,the ankle joint was 2° everted,33° plantarflexed,and 18° internally *** inversion of 114° and internal rotation of 69° was achieved at 0.24 s and 0.20 s after foot strike,*** the foot strike,the ankle joint moved from an initial position of plantarflexion to dorsiflexion-from 33° plantarflexion to 53° dorsiflexion(range=86°).maximum inversion,dorsiflexion,and internal rotation angular velocity were 1262°/s,961°/s,and 677°/s,respectively,at 0.12 s after foot ***:A forefoot landing posture with a plantarflexed and internally rotated ankle joint configuration could incite an acute lateral ankle sprain injury in *** of lateral ankle sprains in badminton should focus on the control and stability of the ankle joint angle during forefoot landings,especially when the athletes perform a combined lateral and backward step.

Another look at silent circulation of poliovirus in small populations

Background:Silent circulation of polioviruses complicates the polio endgame and motivates analyses that explore the probability of undetected circulation for different scenarios.A recent analysis suggested a relatively high probability of unusually long silent circulation of polioviruses in small populations(defined as 10,000 people or smaller).methods:We independently replicated the simple,hypothetical model by Vallejo et al.(2017)and repeated their analyses to explore the model behavior,interpretation of the results,and implications of simplifying ***:We found a similar trend of increasing times between detected cases with increasing basic reproduction number(R0)and population ***,we found substantially lower estimates of the probability of at least 3 years between successive polio cases than they reported,which appear more consistent with the prior *** small and isolated populations may sustain prolonged silent circulation,our reanalysis suggests that the existing rule of thumb of less than a 5%chance of 3 or more years of undetected circulation with perfect surveillance holds for most conditions of the model used by Vallejo et *** most realistic ***:Avoiding gaps in surveillance remains critical to declaring wild poliovirus elimination with high confidence as soon as possible after the last detected poliovirus,but concern about transmission in small populations with adequate surveillance should not significantly change the criteria for the certification of wild polioviruses.

Effect of best management practice implementation on sediment and phosphorus load reductions at subwatershed and watershed scale using SWAT model

Identification of areas contributing disproportionately high amount of pollutants(i.e.,critical source areas(CSAs)) to streams is important to efficiently and effectively target best management practices(BmPs).Process-based models are commonly used to identify CSAs and evaluate the impact of alternative management practices on pollutant load *** objective of this study was to use the Soil and Watershed Assessment Tool(SWAT) to identify CSAs at the subwatershed level and evaluate the impact of alternative BmPs on sediment and total phosphorus(TP) load reductions in the Pleasant Valley watershed(50 km~2) in South Central Wisconsin(USA).The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency,percent bias,and coefficient of determination ranged from 0.58 to 0.71,-12.87 to 38.33,and 0.67 to 0.79,respectively,indicating that SWAT was able to predict stream flow,sediment and TP loadings at a monthly time-step with sufficient *** on the SWAT simulation results,annual average(2006-2012) subwatershed yield for sediment and TP ranged from 0.06 to 3.14 tons hayrand 0.04 to1.9 kg hayr,*** croplands were the major source ofsediment and TP in this watershed(> 84%).Reduction in sediment and TP loading ranged from 66%to 99%at the subwatershed level after conversion of croplands to Conservation Reserve Program(CRP) grasslands in subwatersheds identified as *** the other hand,reduction in sediment and TP loading with implementation of no-till practices ranged from only 14%to 25%.At the watershed outlet,sediment and TP loading reduction wasmplementation of no-till practices because only about 8%of the watershed area was targeted for BmPs and/or resuspension of sediment deposited on the stream bed masked the downstream improvements in water quality.

Discriminating sterile inflammation from infection, especially in cases of aseptic loosening versus an actual prosthetic joint infection, is challenging and has significant treatment implications. Our goal was to evaluate a novel human monoclonal antibody（mAb） probe directed against the Gram-positive bacterial surface molecule lipoteichoic acid（LTA）. Specificity and affinity were assessed in vitro. We then radiolabeled the anti-LTA mAb and evaluated its effectiveness as a diagnostic imaging tool for detecting infection via immuno PET imaging in an in vivo mouse model of prosthetic joint infection（PJI）. In vitro and ex vivo binding of the anti-LTA mAb to pathogenic bacteria was measured with Octet, ELISA, and flow cytometry. The in vivo PJI mouse model was assessed using traditional imaging modalities, including positron emission tomography（PET） with [^（18）F]FDG and [^（18）F]Na F as well as X-ray computed tomography（CT）, before being evaluated with the zirconium-89-labeled antibody specific for LTA（[^（89）Zr]SAC55）.The anti-LTA mAb exhibited specific binding in vitro to LTA-expressing bacteria. Results from imaging showed that our model could reliably simulate infection at the surgical site by bioluminescent imaging, conventional PET tracer imaging, and bone morphological changes by CT. One day following injection of both the radiolabeled anti-LTA and isotype control antibodies, the anti-LTA antibody demonstrated significantly greater（P 〈 0.05） uptake at S. aureus-infected prosthesis sites over either the same antibody at sterile prosthesis sites or of control non-specific antibody at infected prosthesis sites. Taken together, the radiolabeled anti-LTA mAb, [^（89）Zr]SAC55, may serve as a valuable diagnostic molecular imaging probe to help distinguish between sterile inflammation and infection in the setting of PJI. Future studies are needed to determine whether these findings will translate to human PJI.

STUDY OF THE NUCLEATION mECHANISm OF α-Al GRAINS AFTER ADDITION OF Al-Ti-B mASTER ALLOYS

Nucleation sites of α-Al grains after addition of an Al-Ti-B master alloy into pure aluminium have been investigated using EPmA. The results show that either TiAl3 or boride particales can nucleate α-Al grains. But the number of TiAl3 nucleants is reduced with the holding time prolonged and the boride-nuclei are increasing gradually. Based on these results, a new refining method, adding molten Al-Ti-B into commercially pure aluminium, which has a quicker and better refining efficiency is presented.

Immunotherapy for pediatric brain tumors

Immunotherapy, while effective against lymphoid cancers and some solid tumors, has shown less benefit against pediatric brain tumors. Tumor heterogeneity, a suppressive immune microenvironment, and the blood-brain barrier have the potential to diminish any immune-based approach and limit efficacy. more importantly, most pediatric brain tumors are immunologically quiescent, stemming from a low mutational burden. This review focuses on innate vs. adaptive immunotherapeutic approaches and describes how the immunologic context of pediatric brain tumors can help identify well-suited immunotherapies for our patients. In this framework, we will discuss past and current approaches using virotherapy, immunoconjugates, monoclonal antibodies, active immunization, and adoptive cel-lular therapy, and share our thoughts on how immunotherapy can cure children with brain tumors.

Understanding the impact of disease and vaccine mechanisms on the importance of optimal vaccine allocation

Vaccination is an important epidemic intervention ***,it is generally unclear how the outcomes of different vaccine strategies change depending on population characteristics,vaccine mechanisms and allocation *** this paper we develop a conceptual mathematical model to simulate strategies for pre-epidemic *** extend the SEIR model to incorporate a range of vaccine mechanisms and disease *** then compare the outcomes of optimal and suboptimal vaccination strategies for three public health objectives(total infections,total symptomatic infections and total deaths)using numerical *** comparison shows that the difference in outcomes between vaccinating optimally and suboptimally depends on vaccine mechanisms,disease characteristics,and objective *** modelling finds vaccines that impact transmission produce better outcomes as transmission is reduced for all *** vaccines that impact the likelihood of symptomatic disease or dying due to infection,the improvement in outcome as we decrease these variables is dependent on the strategy *** a principled model-based process,this work highlights the importance of designing effective vaccine allocation *** conclude that efficient allocation of resources can be just as crucial to the success of a vaccination strategy as the vaccine effectiveness and/or amount of vaccines available.
