The estimation of glycemic index(GI) of rice-based mixed meal either by using predicted GI(GI_(pred)) or adjusted GI(GI_(adj)) formula is *** study aimed to determine the glycemic response of rice in rice alone or mixed meals and to identify the appropriate formula for estimating the GI of rice-based mixed *** glycemic responses produced by the rice alone(red rice,fragrant white rice or parboiled rice) and the rice-based mixed meals(fried red rice,fried fragrant white rice or fried parboiled rice) which provided 25 g available carbohydrate were assessed in 11 healthy *** determine the measured GI(GImeasured) of rice alone and rice-based mixed meals,participants underwent three repeated tests of a reference food(Glucolin~?).Tests were performed in random order on nine separate visits after an overnight fasting for at least 8 *** glucose at baseline(0 min),15,30,45,60,90 and 120 min from starting the meals was assessed and used to determine the incremental area under the curve(iAUC_(120)).The agreement between GImeasured and the estimation formulae(GI_(pred) or GI_(adj)) were determined using Bland-Altman *** iAUC_(120) after consuming rice alone was significantly higher than the rice-based mixed meals except for fried fragrant rice,which was comparable to the rice alone(P > 0.05).The GI_(measured) values of rice were categorized as medium(61 for parboiled rice,67 for fragrant white rice,and 68 for red rice).GI_(pred)(r = 0.40,P < 0.01) and GI_(adj)(r = 0.41,P < 0.01) were significantly correlated with iAUC_(120).The agreement between GI_(measured) and GI_(adj) is apparent suggesting the usefulness of GI_(adj) in estimating meal GI of rice-based mixed meals.

Objective: To identify and determine the composition of antioxidant compounds, and to evaluate the antioxidant abilities of Gac fruit parts(peel, pulp, seed and aril) grown in Malaysia. Methods: LC-MS/MS was used for identification of antioxidant compounds and UV-Vis for estimation of the contents of phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Lycopene and β-carotene were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. DPPH(2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays were employed to evaluate antioxidant capacities. Results: Phytochemicals were found amongst all the fruit parts. Notably, significant amounts of carotenoids [(107.4 ± 4.5),(85.7 ± 4.4),(110.6 ± 2.1) mg/100 g dry weight(DW)], and relatively high levels of both phenolics [(27.3 ± 1.7),(28.9 ± 2.4),(30.8 ± 2.7) mg/100 g DW] and flavonoids [(38.1 ± 2.2),(8.8 ± 1.3),(24.5 ± 3.3) mg/100 g DW] were found in the fruit's peel, pulp and aril, respectively. Seed part also showed a relatively high level of flavonoids [(18.1 ± 2.3) mg/100 g DW]. Lycopene and β-carotene were found to be significantly high(P < 0.05) in aril [(579.3 ± 22.7) and(621.0 ± 35.0) μg/g DW], followed by peel [(51.0 ± 7.5) and(210.0 ± 12.5) μg/g DW] and pulp [(37.6 ± 10.9) and(205.6 ± 22.1) μg/g DW)]. Antioxidant assays revealed that aril possessed the highest scavenging activity(IC_(50) = 865 μg/mL), while the peel possessed the highest ferric reducing power of 140 μmol FeSO4/μg. Conclusions: The current results demonstrate that Gac fruit grown in Malaysia is a rich source of phytochemicals, especially carotenoids, and possesses antioxidant activities. Thus, such findings suggest Gac fruit as a source of an antioxidant plant.

Objective: To investigate the impact of the extracts of Gac fruit parts(peel, pulp, seed, and aril) on the cell viability and angiogenesis markers of human retinal pigment epithelial(ARPE-19) cells under high glucose conditions. Methods: The effect of the extracts of Gac fruit peel, pulp, seed and aril on the ARPE-19 cells was determined using MTT viability assay, Trypan blue dye and morphological changes were observed using light microscopy. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent-based assay was performed to evaluate the effect of Gac fruit parts on the reactive oxygen species(ROS), vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and pigmented epithelium-derived factor(PEDF) secretions. Results: High glucose(HG) at 30 mmol/L increased ARPE-19 cell viability and ROS and VEGF secretions. While, the exposure of ARPE-19 cells in high glucose condition to Gac fruit extracts led to inhibition of cell viability, induced morphological changes, decreased ROS and VEGF secretions, and increased PEDF level. Gac pulp, seed, and aril at 1 000 μg/mL showed significant inhibition activities [(7.5 ± 5.1)%,(2.7 ± 0.5)%,(3.2 ± 1.1)%, respectively] against HG-induced ARPE-19 cell viability. The findings also demonstrated that Gac aril at 250 μg/mL significantly decreased ROS and VEGF levels [(40.6 ± 3.3) pg/mL,(107.4 ± 48.3) pg/mL, respectively] compared to ROS [(71.7 ± 2.9) pg/mL ] and VEGF [(606.9 ± 81.1) pg/mL] in HG untreated cells. Moreover, 250 μg/mL of Gac peel dramatically increased PEDF level [(18.2 ± 0.3) ng/mL] compared to that in HG untreated cells [(0.48 ± 0.39) ng/mL]. Conclusions: This study indicates that the extracts of Gac peel, pulp, seed and aril reduced cell viability, minimized ROS generations and showed angiogenic activities. Therefore, our findings open new insights into the potentiality of Gac fruit against HG-related diabetic retinopathy disease.

Coconut water(CW)is a popular natural hydration drink in tropical *** is rich in essential electrolytes,vitamins,minerals,and bioactive compounds with functional ***,this work aimed to evaluate the functional properties(i.e.,antioxidant and anti-aging activities)and to determine selected bioactive compounds in young and mature CW from the four most popular coconut varieties in Malaysia namely,Aromatic Green Dwarf(PDN),Malaysian Yellow Dwarf(MYD),MATAG(MYD×Tagnanan)and MAWA(MYD×West African Tall).Spectrophotometric and liquid chromatography methods were used to quantify the changes in the tested *** is shown that the quantification of selected bioactive compounds and functional activities of CW displayed a mixed pattern at different *** from antioxidant,anti-aging activities,amino acids profile and bioactive compounds such as gallic acid,catechin,trans-zeatin,and dihydrozeatin were measured to decrease with the coconuts’***,the amount of kinetin,kinetin riboside and trans-zeatin riboside increased with the maturation of the ***,CW from young MYD showed the highest antioxidant and anti-aging activities and possessed diverse bioactive compounds that could serve as novel sources of natural functional ingredients targeted for skin *** addition,the sensory evaluation showed that the taste of young and mature CW is acceptable for consumption with the young PDN,young MYD and mature MYD displaying the highest *** the best of our knowledge,the present work reported the first attempt to elucidate the inhibitory activities of CW towards elastase and collagenase enzymes.

The hexane,ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from bark of Melicope glabra were evaluated for their antioxidant capacity by measuring DPPH free radical scaveging activity and their oxygen radical absorbance capacity （ORAC）.Both ethyl acetate and methanol extracts showed strong antioxidant capacity against DPPH and ORAC *** DPPH scaveging activity assay,the IC 50 values of 24.81 μg/mL and 13.01 μg/mL were obtained for ethyl acatate and methanol,*** ORAC values （μmolTE/kg） quantified for ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were 190160 and 272760,*** IC 50 value recorded for hexane extract was higher than 500 μg/mL,thus no further chemical and biological investigations were performed on hexane *** assay guided isolation of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts by various column chromatography techniques revealed that two known coumarins and one lignan present in both *** structural identification by detail spectroscopic methods showed the structures as umbelliferone （1）,sopoletin （2） and sesamin（3）.These compounds were first time reported to be isolated from this *** data were compared to the literature values published earlier.

The Hill cipher algorithm is one of the symmetric key algorithms that have several advantages in data encryption. However, a main drawback of this algorithm is that it encrypts identical plaintext blocks to identical ciphertext blocks and cannot encrypt images that contain large areas of a single color. Thus, it does not hide all features of the image which reveals patterns in the plaintext. Moreover, it can be easily broken with a known plaintext attack revealing weak security. This paper presents a variant of the Hill cipher that overcomes these disadvantages. The proposed technique adjusts the encryption key to form a dif- ferent key for each block encryption. Visually and computationally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed variant yields higher security and significantly superior encryption quality compared to the original one.

The concentrations of Cd,Cu,Pb,Zn,Ni and Fe were determined in the surface sediment and marine gastropod Nerita lineata collected in May 2005 from the intertidal zone of Dumai,Sumatera,Indonesia and Johor,Peninsular *** results showed that metal concentrations in sediment and the soft tissue of *** varied at different sampling *** heavy metal concentrations were 0.92 μg/g(Cd);6.40 μg/g(Cu);32.77 μg/g(Pb);54.41 μg/g(Zn);11.56 μg/g(Ni) and 2.97%(Fe) in sediment from Dumai and 1.15 μg/g(Cd);26.73 μg/g(Cu);53.45 μg/g(Pb);130.77 μg/g(Zn);20.79 μg/g(Ni) and 2.72%(Fe) in sediment from *** of metals in gastropod *** were 0.71 μg/g(Cd);15.16 μg/g(Cu);9.35 μg/g(Pb);94.69 μg/g(Zn);5.08 μg/g(Ni) and 397.97 μg/g(Fe) in samples from Dumai and 1.24 μg/g(Cd);18.02 μg/g(Cu);19.75 μg/g(Pb);95.09 μg/g(Zn);5.57 μg/g(Ni) and 473.56 μg/g(Fe) in samples from *** they were not statistically significant(p>0.05),heavy metal concentrations in *** were correlated with the concentrations of respective metals in sediment in both samples from Dumai and *** general,samples of sediment and gastropod from Johor accumulated significantly higher heavy metal concentrations when compared to samples from Dumai(p<0.05).Higher concentrations of metals were recorded in samples collected from the stations close to the industrial and anthropogenic activities in both Dumai and Johor ***,most of the concentrations were still comparable to the previous reported studies from other geographical areas.

Acute liver failure secondary to severe systemic disease from fatal hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis:Case report and systematic literature review

AIM To systematically review liver disease associated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis(HLH),propose reasonable contraindications for liver transplantation for liver failure in HLH,and report an illustrative *** Systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines of hepatic manifestations of HLH using computerizedliterature search via PubMed of articles published since 1980 with keywords("hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis" or "HLH") AND("liver" or "hepatic"). Two authors independently performed literature search and incorporated articles into this review by consensus. Illustrative case report presented based on review of medical chart,and expert re-review of endoscopic photographs,radiologic images,and pathologic slides. RESULTS A 47-year-old Caucasian male,was hospitalized with high-grade pyrexia,rash,total bilirubin = 45 g/dL,moderately elevated hepatic transaminases,ferritin of 3300 ng/dL,leukopenia,and profound neutropenia(absolute neutrophil count < 100 cells/mm3). Viral serologies for hepatitis A,B,and C were negative. Abdominal computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed no hepatic or biliary abnormalities. Pathologic analysis of liver biopsy revealed relatively well-preserved hepatic parenchyma without lymphocytic infiltrates or macrophage invasion,except for sparse,focal hepatocyte necrosis. Bone marrow biopsy and aspirate revealed foamy macrophages engulfing mature and precursor erythrocytes,consistent with HLH. Interleukin-2 receptor(CD25) was highly elevated,confirming diagnosis of HLH according to Histiocytic Society criteria. Patient initially improved after high-dose prednisone therapy. Patient was judged not to be a liver transplant candidate despite model for end stage liver disease(MELD) score = 33 because liver failure was secondary to severe systemic disease from HLH,including septic shock,focal centrilobular hepatocyte necrosis from hypotension,bone marrow failure,and explosive immune activation from HLH.
