Chemical and microbiological characterization of tinctures and microcapsules loaded with Brazilian red propolis extract

The aim of this study was to characterize tinctures and microcapsules loaded with an ethanol extract of red propolis through chemical, physicochemical and microbiological assays in order to establish quality control tools for nutraceutical preparations of red propolis. The markers(isoflavonoids, chalcones, pterocarpans,flavones, phenolic acids, terpenes and guttiferones) present in the tinctures A and B were identified and confirmed using LC/ESI/FTMS/Orbitrap. Four compositions(A, B, C and D) were prepared to contain B tincture of the red propolis with some pharmaceutical excipients and submitted to two drying processes, i. ***-drying and freeze-drying to obtain microcapsules loaded with the red propolis extract. The tinctures and microcapsules of the red propolis were submitted to the total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity *** antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) were tested using Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25293 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 strains. The tinctures and microcapsules presented high flavonoid quantities from 20.50 to 40.79 mg/100 mg of the microcapsules. The antioxidant activity and IC50 were determined for the tinctures A and B(IC50: 6.95 μg/m L and 7.48 μg/m L), the spray-dried microcapsules(IC50: 8.89–15.63 μg/m L) and the freeze-dried microcapsules(IC50: 11.83–23.36 μg/m L). The tinctures and microcapsules were proved to be bioactive against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with inhibition halos superior to 10 mm at concentration of 200 μg/m L and MIC values of 135.87–271.74 μg/m L using gram-positive strain and 271.74–543.48 μg/m L using gram-negative strain. The tinctures and microcapsules of the red propolis have a potential application for nutraceutical products.

Dear editor,Vulvar sarcomas are rare and represent 1%–3%of cancers in this region.1 Leiomyosarcoma is the most common type of vulvar *** contrast,epithelioid sarcoma(ES)is extremely rare,accounting for around 1%of soft-tissue vulvar *** the ESs of the vulva,proximal variants tend to have a more aggressive clinical course,in comparison to distal variants.2 The treatment of choice in proximal-type ES of the vulva is surgical resection,usually with surgical margins greater than 2 *** to the extreme rarity of these malignancies,clear algorithms for adjuvant treatment of these tumors have still not been *** and/or chemotherapy may be indicated in some cases.

Spatiotemporal assessment of particulate matter(PM_(10) and PM_(2.5)) and ozone in a Caribbean urban coastal city

Air pollution has become a critical issue in urban areas,so a broad understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics is important to develop public *** study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation of atmospheric particulate matter(PM_(10) and PM_(2.5))and ozone(O_(3))in Barranquilla,Colombia from March 2018 to june 2019 in three monitoring *** average concentrations observed for the Móvil,Policía,and Tres Avemarías stations,respectively,for PM_(10):46.4,51.4,and 39.7μg/m^(3);for PM_(2.5):16.1,18.1,and 15.1μg/m^(3) and for O_(3):35.0,26.6,and 33.6μg/m^(3).The results indicated spatial and temporal variations between the stations and the pollutants *** highest PM concentrations were observed in the southern part of the city,while for ozone,higher concentrations were observed in the *** variations are mainly associated with the influence of local sources in the environment of each site evaluated as well as the meteorological conditions and transport patterns of the study *** study also verified the existence of differences in the concentrations of the studied pollutants between the dry and rainy seasons and the contribution of local sources as biomass burnings from the Isla Salamanca Natural Park and long-range transport of dust particles from the Sahara *** study provides a scientific baseline for understanding air quality in the city,which enables policy makers to adopt efficient measures that jointly prevent and control pollution.

Painful Symptomatology Reported by Dentistry Students at a Brazilian University

Objectives: Identification of the level of knowledge on ergonomics principles, and application of these by dentistry students to investigate whether painful symptomatology was experienced. An-other objective is the expansion of discussions on occupational health in academic settings. Study Design and Settings: Dentistry students of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil (n = 148) were surveyed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to determine the severity of musculoskeletal symptoms experienced. Data were analyzed through EpiInfo 7.0 to measure central trends and variability 5for quantitative variables, absolute and relative frequencies for categorical variables, and significance between groups (confidence intervals and chisquare). Association analysis (Pearson) was also carried out. Results: Ergonomic measures were not reported by students. Within the musculoskeletal symptoms described, females were the most affected, independent of academic level. Conclusions: Positive correlations were verified between all categories and all anatomic regions (e.g., neck, lower back, wrists, hands, and shoulders). Data suggest progressive worsening of symptoms, which will eventually result in leaves of absence.

HPLC-DAD analysis and antifungal effect of Hyptis martiusii Benth(Lamiaceae) against Candida strains

Objective: To evaluate the anti Candida activity of Hyptis martiusii decoction and its major compound, caffeic acid alone or in the presence of fluconazole, as well as their cytotoxic effect. Methods: The decoction was characterized using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector. For the antifungal activity, the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and the potential effect of the decoction with the fluconazole were evaluated by microdilution method using 96-well microtiter trays. The osmotic fragility test was performed using erythrocytes under saline stress. All tests were performed in triplicate. Results: The chemical characterization of the decoction was performed by high performance liquid chromatography and revealed the presence of seven compounds, including caffeic acid as major constituent. The antifungal tests demonstrated that both decoction(DHm) and caffeic acid obtained from Hyptis martiusii presented MIC and MFC ≥4096 μg/mL against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis strains. However, in the presence of fluconazole, DHm and caffeic acid presented IC_(50) of 2.60 and 2.53 μg/mL respectively, demonstrating significant synergistic effects against Candida strains. The modulator activity of DHm might be due to the presence of caffeic acid. Moreover, DHm and caffeic acid did not cause significant hemolytic effects, indicating that they present low cytotoxicity. Conclusions: These data indicate that DHm potentiates the activity of the fluconazole, without enhancement of the toxicity, encouraging further toxicological, pharmacological and phytochemical studies to provide consistent evidence of the potential of this plant to be used in drug development.

Effective calcium(Ca)management is crucial for optimizing oil palm cultivation and enhancing crop *** study aimed to gain insights into the dynamics of Ca concentration,accumulation,exportation,immobilization,and recycling in various oil palm organs relative to plant *** experiment was conducted at the Agropalma enterprise site in the northeastern region of Para State,Brazil,evaluating seven plant age treatments:2,3,4,5,6,7,and 8 years *** a completely randomized design with four *** results demonstrated an age-related increase in Ca concentration in petioles,rachis,arrows,male inflorescences,peduncles,and ***,Ca accumulation exhibited an upward trend in all organs with progressing plant ***,the study revealed an enhanced Ca use efficiency across all plant organs in correlation with the age of oil palm *** findings underscore the dynamic nutritional demands of oil palm,influencing Ca immobilization,cycling,and export throughout its developmental stages.

To understand the influence of environmental factors on the metabolic diversity of phytochemical compounds from extracts of leaves and bark of Anacardium occidentale,collected in two different geographic areas,ultra-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used,as well as the composition of physicochemical properties of both soils at the collection site(“Lavras da Mangabeira”and“Crato”).It was possible to observe physicochemical differences between the soils of the two collection areas and some *** present granulometry with a sandy texture,with high values of total sand,with acid pH,and variation in porosity *** micronutrients with the highest accumulation in the soil,with emphasis on the predominance of P(Phosphorus)and Al(Aluminium)mainly in the 20-40 cm layer in ***-three phytochemical compounds were identified in the leaf and bark extracts,of which 28 were present in the leaves and 20 in the bark *** this total,13 were present in at least one of the parts of the plant(leaf or bark),and most were present in both Crato and Lavras da Mangabeira,presenting mainly phenolic acids,flavonoids and tannins in all extracts *** extracts showed similarities between the groups of *** together,this study may be relevant to assess environmental influences on the production of secondary metabolites.

Initial Analysis of Lipid Metabolomic Profile Reveals Differential Expression Features in Myeloid Malignancies

The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine the comparative lipid profile of blood plasma samples of healthy individuals and patients with Myeloproliferative Neoplasms. Methods: Untargeted Shotgun MS/MS Analysis was performed to evaluate plasma samples from 153 participants, being 90 of the Control Group, 43 Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN), 11 Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and 9 Acute Myeloid Leukemias (AML). Lipids were extracted from plasma using the Bligh-Dyer protocol. Data were acquired using the AB-Sciex Analyst TF, processed using the AB-Sciex LipidViewTM and the web-based analytical pipeline MetaboAnalyst 2.0 (***). Results: Untargeted analysis identified in negative and positive-modes a total of 658 features at 2 ppm resolution. PCA and PLS-DA analysis revealed clear discrimination among groups, in particular for AML patients. Main lipid groups differentially expressed were: Monoacylglycerols (MAG), Glucosylceramide E (GlcdE), Ethyl Esters (EE), Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), Sulfoquinovosil diacylglycerols (SQDG), Monoglycerols (MG), Methyl Ethanolamines (ME), Lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC), Dimethyl Phosfatidyletanolamines (DMPE), Monometylphosphatidiletanolamines (MMPE), Ceramide-1-phosphate (CerP), Glicerophosphoglycerols (GP), Lysomonomethyl-Phosphatidylethanolamines (LMMPE), Phosphatidic Acids (PA), Ergosterols (ERG), Glycerophosphoserine (PS), Diacylglycerols (DAG), Hexocylceramides (HexCer) and Lanosterol (Lan). ROC Curve Analysis revealed Total LMMPE as the strongest discriminating marker between Controls from Patients. In addition, these lipids were also able to differentiate MDS and AML from NPM. Conclusions: The Myeloproliferative Neoplasms from the point of view of global plasma lipidomics are accompanied by several modifications. In particular, the Lysomonomethyl-Phosphatidylethanolamines (LMMPE) seems to play important differentiating roles among them.

The balcony is responsible to a series of effects on the environmental behavior of a building,mainly in relation of thermal comfort and air distribution to their indoor *** a very common practice in several metropolitan areas is the closing with retractable glass panels in balcony *** work analyzed the effects of glazed balconies upon thermal comfort in a hot tropical *** parameters were carried out in a flat alternating the conditions of retractable glass panels to *** simulations were performed considering closing or not the glass door that divides the balcony room;the building material used on the balcony sill;and the use of curtains or shading *** results show the maximum mean hourly temperatures recorded on the balcony during the period when the retractable glass panels were closed,reaching peaks between 31.7 and 39.2°C,above the comfort range recommended by ASHRAE *** situations simulated show the thermal discomfort prevails in the use of the closed glass panels reaching DhTD of 94.55°C/***,this practice of using most of the closed retractable glass panels in the balconies presents disadvantages and inefficiencies especially in hot and humid tropical climate regions.

Black carbon(BC)is one of the short-lived air pollutants that contributes significantly to aerosol radiative forcing and global climate *** is emitted by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels,biofuels,and *** environments are quite complex and thus,the use of mobile jointly with fixed monitoring provides a better understanding of the dynamics of BC distribution in such *** present study addresses the measurement of BC concentration using real-time mobile and ambient monitoring in Barranquilla,an industrialized urban area of the Colombian Caribbean.A microaethalometer(MA200)and an aethalometer(AE33)were used for measuring the BC *** absorption Ångström exponent(AAE)values were determined for the study area,for identifying the BC emission *** results of the ambient sampling show that vehicle traffic emissions prevail;however,the influence of biomass burning was also *** mean ambient BC concentration was found to be 1.04±1.03μg/m^(3) and varied between 0.5 and 4.0μg/m^(3).From the mobile measurements obtained in real traffic conditions on the road,a much higher average value of 16.1±16.5μg/m^(3) was *** parts of the city showed BC concentrations higher than 20μg/m^(3).The spatial distribution of BC concentration shows that vehicle emissions and traffic jams,a consequence of road and transport infrastructure,are the factors that most affect the BC concentration.A comparison of results obtained from two aethalometers indicates that the concentrations measured by MA200 are 9%lower than those measured by *** AAE obtained was found to vary between 1.1 and 1.6,indicating vehicular emissions as the most crucial *** addition,it was observed that the BC concentration on working days was 2.5 times higher than on the weekends in the case of mobile monitoring and 1.5 times higher in the case of ambient monitoring.
