Classic physical and chemical treatments applied to separating clay minerals from the host sediments are often difficult or aggressive for clay minerals. A technique using cation exchange resins (amberlite iRC\|50H and amberlite iR\|120) is used to separate clay minerals from the host sediments. The technique is based on the exchange of cations in the minerals that may be associated clay minerals in sediments, such as Ca and Mg from dolomite; Ca from calcite, gypsum and francolite with cations carried by resin radicals. The associated minerals such as gypsum, calcite, dolomite and francolite are removed in descending order. Separation of clay minerals using cation exchange resins is less aggressive than that by other classic treatments. The efficiency of amberlite iRC\|50H in the removal of associated minerals is greater than that of amberlite iR\|120.

Egypt is characterized by wide occurrence of serpentinites, particularly in the central and southern parts of Eastern Desert. There are several cooperate factors that affect the serpentinites used as ornamental stones. These factors involve mineralogical characteristics (including mineral composition and microstructure parameter), physical properties and mechanical properties. Antigorite is an essential serpentinite mineral, with a minor amount of chrysotile. Talc, carbonates (magnesite and dolomite) and tremolite are the main associated minerals. Quality and quantity of associated minerals such as talc and carbonates (dolomite and magnesite) affect the properties of serpentinites used as ornamental stones. Carbonates are resistant to weathering but suffer from acidic cleaning agents in interior use, whereas serpentinites with a high content of talc used on external faces undergo an increase in volume and a consequent rapid degradation. Studied serpentinites are characterized by relatively small grain size with foliated texture, low water absorption, low porosity, and high abrasion resistance. in the samples studied the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) varies between 89 and 189 MPa, with an average of 152 MPa. According to the classification of Bell (1992), sample No. B8 is very high in strength while the rest high in strength.

in this paper we hybridize ant colony optimiza- tion （ACt） and river formation dynamics （RFD）, two related swarm intelligence methods. in ACt, ants form paths （prob- lem solutions） by following each other＇s pheromone trails and reinforcing trails at best paths until eventually a single path is followed. On the other hand, RFD is based on copy- ing how drops form rivers by eroding the ground and de- positing sediments. in a rough sense, RFD can be seen as a gradient-oriented version of ACt. Several previous experi- ments have shown that the gradient orientation of RFD makes this method solve problems in a different way as ACt. in particular, RFD typically performs deeper searches, which in turn makes it find worse solutions than ACt in the first exe- cution steps in general, though RFD solutions surpass ACt solutions after some more time passes. in this paper we try to get the best features of both worlds by hybridizing RFD and ACt. We use a kind of ant-drop hybrid and consider both pheromone trails and altitudes in the environment. We apply the hybrid method, as well as ACt and RFD, to solve two NP-hard problems where ACt and RFD fit in a different manner： the traveling salesman problem （TSP） and the prob- lem of the minimum distances tree in a variable-cost graph （MDV）. We compare the results of each method and we an- alyze the advantages of using the hybrid approach in each case.

For improving wastewater quality, one of the dare of steelworks is reducing cyanide in wastewater of gas washing treatment of blast furnaces. Costs of existing treatments, stringent environmental regulations and changeable composition of water from gas treatment, have led to study how available treatments can be modified and to examine new ones. Ozonation is one of cyanide treatments, tested within a European project. A process model was set up with Aspen Plus (R), to assess operating conditions and wastewater distinctive characteristics and to demonstrate treatment robustness. Process was modeled by theoretical reactors, taking into account all more affecting reactions. A genetic algorithm was exploited to find kinetic parameters of these reactions. After validation, the model was used to analyse scenarios, by considering also real contexts. Pilot tests were extended, process knowledge was enhanced and suggestions were obtained. To promote cyanide removal with ozone, temperature and pH values were 30 degrees C and 10, respectively. With an ozone (mg/h)/ water (L/h) ratio of 100 mg/L, batch mode ensure reaching cyanide regulation limit (0.2 mg/L) after maximum 4.5 h, if initial amount was less than 20 mg/L. Higher removal was obtained than in continuous mode due to constraints related to this last run. Higher wastewater contamination needed further time and more ozone.
