AIM: To suggest a novel retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) screening model in developing countries incorporating postnatal weight gain ratios(PWGR) to traditional parameters to maintain sensitivity and improve specificity in detecting ROP. METHODS: Analysis of weekly PWGR of infants from one tertiary referral center during six months to determine the age at which the PWGR with the highest predictability for ROP development which was referred to as the postnatal net weight gain ratio(NWGR). NWGR was added to conventional criteria to describe a new model(The Alex-ROP model). RESULTS: Of 560 infants were included. NWGR 28 d after birth was the most predictive factor for the development of ROP. A new model Alex-ROP recommending screening infants with gestational age(GA) ≤33 wk or birth weight ≤1500 g and NWGR at 28 d after birth <0.3 was suggested. A second screening model referred to as High-grade AlexROP(Hg Alex-ROP) model to detect worse grade ROP(Both type 1 and type 2) recommending a cutoff point of NWGR <0.15 between birth and 28^(th) day. CONCLUSION: Both Alex-ROP and Hg Alex-ROP models are easy to apply to improve the specificity of ROP screening in developing countries while maintaining high sensitivity.

This study investigates the X-ray properties and evolution of Type II supernovae (SNe II) observed by Swift, examining variations among supernovae and exploring their X-ray characteristics over time. We present the first X-ray study of the Type IIp supernova SN 2008ij using data from the Swift X-ray mission. This investigation focuses on its spectral properties, identifying an X-ray flux of 1.20 (+0.11, −0.10) × 10−13 erg/cm2/s and a plasma temperature of 4.76 (+1.22, −0.83) keV. Our study marks an advancement in understanding SN 2008ij, providing crucial results into its X-ray emission characteristics. These results lay the groundwork for future studies of Type IIp supernovae, offering a foundation for exploring their evolutionary and physical processes.

Steroids and ecdysteroids have been shown to exhibit a range of biological effects,including anti-inflammatory,anticancer,and *** systematic review aims to highlight the evidence-based neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of steroids and ecdysteroids in sh-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.A comprehensive literature search was conducted on May 11,2023,without publication source restrictions,using various electronic databases,including PubMed,Web of Science(WoS),Scopus,and Cumulative Index toNursing and Allied Health *** 103articles,only20 studies were included for investigating the neuroprotective effects of steroids and ecdysteroids in sh-SY5Y cells exposed to oxidative stress or neurotoxic *** risk of bias and quality assessment of the included studies were evaluated in accordance with the Nature Publication Quality Improvement Project specific *** selected studies reported the antioxidant effects of the tested compounds on sh-SY5Y cells and demonstrated their ability to scavenge free radicals and prevent lipid *** findings suggest that neurosteroids have potential therapeutic applications for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by oxidative stress and neuronal *** studies have investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of steroids and ecdysteroids in sh-SY5Y *** mechanisms include the activation of antioxidant enzymes,such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase,and the modulation of various signaling pathways,including the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B and mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase *** review provides evidence that the tested compounds have remarkable neuroprotective and antioxidant effects in human neuroblastoma sh-SY5Y cells.

Metal-substituted cobalt ferrites [MxCo(1-x)Fe2O4(M=Zn,Cu,Mn;x=0.0,0.25,0.5,and 0.75)]were synthesized via a sol-gel *** ferrite structures were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy,surface analysis using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method,and energy-dispersive X-ray *** activity of these ferrites against selected pathogenic microbes was *** structures remained cubic spinel phases after substitution of *** strongly influenced the microstructure and homoge- neous grain *** particle size of the ferrites increased linearly with increase in their annealing *** surface area of zinc cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (ZCFO)was 52.56m^2/g,the average pore size was 1.84nm,and pore volume was 0.136mL/*** ferrites showed antimicrobial activity toward all pathogens *** these,the most powerful was ZCFO,showing zones of inhibition of 13.0mm against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and 12.0mm against Candida ***-irradiated ZCFO nanoparticles (150.0kGy)maintained higher antimicrobial activity than non-irradiated particles,e.g. being active toward *** (16.0mm).ZCFO is proposed as a candidate material for industrial and biomedical purposes.

Background: Male infertility is a common problem and needs a minimally invasive method to arrive at the appropriate diagnosis. Alternative to open testicular biopsy the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the testis is being increasingly used?as a minimally invasive method of evaluating testicular function. Aim: To determine the causes of azoospermia and evaluate the efficacy of FNAC as compared to open testicular biopsy in evaluating azoosparmic men by correlating diagnosis from testis FNAC with biopsy histology. Patients and Methods: We prospectively studied 67 consecutive infertile patients who referred to andrology department of Al-Yarmouk Teaching hospital, Baghdad, Iraq between (January 2010-January 2014). All patients were azoospermic. They underwent bilateral testicular fine needle aspiration for cytological evaluation as well as bilateral testicular biopsy for histopathological correlation. Results: The morphological diagnosis revealed normal spermatogenesis in 12 patients (17.9%), hyposparmatogenesis in 4 (5.9%), spermatogenic arrest in 39 (58.2%), Sertoli cell only in 7 (10.4%), and complete tubular hyalinization in 5 patients (7.4%). Good correlation between the 2 methods was found in 120 (91.6%) testes which was identical in the right and left testis. Discrepancies between cytology and histology were mainly the result of insufficient and scanty smears. Conclusion: Testicular FNAC is a simple and minimally invasive alternative method to open testicular biopsy in the investigation and assessment of patients with azoospermia.

Ethyl 7-amino-3-（3-methyl-5-oxo- 1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-4-yl）-5-aryl-5H-thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-6-carboxy- late was hydrolyzed with an ethanolic sodium hydroxide and the sodium salt thus formed underwent cyclization with acetic anhydride to afford 2-methyl-7-（3-methyl-5-oxo-l-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-4-yl）-5-arylthiazolo[3,2-a]- pyrimido[4,5-d]oxazin-4（sh）-one. This compound was transformed to related heterocyclic systems via its reaction with various reagents. The biological activity of the prepared compounds was tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria as well as yeast-like and filamentous fungi. They revealed in some cases excellent biocidal properties.

This paper describes the effects of atrium roof forms and internal structural obstructions（roof truss） upon the daylight levels in atrium buildings under tropical real sky conditions（intermediate sky）.Daylight measurements were made inside one atrium model with four different types of structured roof forms（flat,pitched,pyramidal-gridded and south facing saw-tooth）.Results showed intermediate skies revealed a generally linear relationship and had a good degree of correlation with the overall reduction of daylight *** obstructions tend to reduce about 55% of light transmittance with similar pattern of losses for all roof *** was observed that the internal obstructions of roof created relatively constant attenuation of the daylight compared with the clear unobstructed *** structured flat roof had the least impact on roof transmittance,and generally all four roof forms had similar patterns of light *** measurements also confirmed that as the sky brightened,the daylight availability became more significant as the inclined glazing and internal obstructions tend to reflect or splay sunlight away or into the *** analysis showed significant differences between the effects of roof forms and internal roof obstructions（roof truss） on daylight levels that will support the authors’ future project of using innovative glazing panels as roof glazing material.

High-resolution shallow seismic methods are the most widely used geophysical methods in near surface characterization. However, in many cases interpreting the seismic images can be misleading. In this article, we present three case studies where results from P-wave seismic reflection, sh-wave seismic reflection, and multi-channel analysis of surface wave （MASW） surveys were incorrectly interpreted because of inadequate constraints on either the surveyed sites surface or subsurface conditions. A P-wave reflection survey feature was first interpreted as a shallow fault zone but it was later determined to result from a high level of background noise as the acquisition passed through a road intersection. A sh-wave seismic reflection survey feature was interpreted to be a reverse dip-slip fault but targeted drilling showed it was deep local erosion into the bedrock surface. Finally, in an MASW survey, a steeply dipping feature was first interpreted as a bedrock valley. However, later exploratory drilling showed the feature to be a shallow layer of very soft lake sediment that severely damped most of the applied surface wave frequency band. Although initial interpretations were incorrect, they stimulated discussions among geophysicists and geologists and underscored the need for meaningful cooperation and discourse between the scientists before, during, and after geophysical data acquisition.

Percutaneous Mitral Valvotomy in Children and Adolescents: Immediate and Midterm Results

Objective: To analyze immediate and midterm results of percutaneous mitral valvotomy (PMV) in patients ≤ 18 year, a single centre experience of Sohag university hospital. Methods: Between May 2010 and May 2012, 64 procedures of Inoue technique mitral valvotomy were performed on 64 patients. The mean age was 15.8 ± 2.2 years;75% were females. Results: Success was obtained in 96.8% of patients. Immediate complications were severe mitral regurgitation (3.1%), cardiac tamponade (1.6%) and embolic stroke in (1.6%). Late follow-up was obtained in 93.7% of the patients (at 6 and 24 months). Restenosis developed in 3 patients. Most of the patients had no symptoms at discharge but most of them had NYHA class I to II at 6 months to 2 years follow up. No patients died. Patients who operated early with MVA around 1.4 had best outcome. Conclusion: PMV represents a safe therapeutic option in young patients with mitral valve stenosis. In these patients, recurrence of symptoms and restenosis occurs at an earlier stage than in elderly. Earlier intervention carries better outcome and decreases restenosis rate.
