Gold dissolves electrochem.cally in alkaline solutions containing ligands to form.com.lex ions with gold ion. Therefore, selective leaching of noble m.tals is expected without dissolution of base m.tals such as steels, alum.num.alloys in scrap treatm.nt. Gold electrodes were investigated using linear sweep voltam.etry, EQCm.m.thod and potentiostatic electrolysis in alkaline solutions containing thiourea, Na 2SO 3 and Na 2S 2O 3. The solution com.osition, electrode potential affect gold dissolution rate and current efficiency. The gold dissolved from.anode electrode form. com.lex ions, suspension particles as com.ound precipitates and deposits on cathode electrode as a m.tal. Anodic efficiency for gold dissolution is between 10% and 22%. This is caused by the oxidation decom.osition of sulfite ions and thiourea. The stability of the alkaline solution containing these elem.nts was also estim.ted by capillary electrophoresis technique.

Recent Clim.tic Effects on Seasonal Rice Yields in Bangladesh： A Statistical Overview

Expecting that agricultural yield is highly dependent on clim.tic conditions, particularly water availability and suitable tem.erature, an agroclim.tic study was carried out on rice crops during three different seasons in four regions of Bangladesh. Data on clim.te （surface air tem.erature and precipitation） and seasonal rice production were exam.ned for the period 1986-2006 from.18 rice growth observatories. The relationship between clim.te and rice production was statistically analyzed by rem.ving long-term.trends so that the effects of im.roved irrigation, which results in a general increase in crop production, m.y be rem.ved. The analysis involved both single and m.ltiple regressions. The results suggested that, during m.nsoon and sum.er, higher tem.eratures had negative effects on rice production, especially in the northwestern （NW） region. In winter, positive effects were observed throughout Bangladesh. Since the annual m.an tem.erature was positively correlated with those in the three seasons individually, the annual tem.erature had negative effects on the annual rice production only in the NW region, while it had positive effects in the central and southern regions. With the exception of the NW region, it was basically dry, excessive rainfall both in sum.er and m.nsoon yielded floods and reduced rice yield. In winter, m.re rainfall showed positive effects on crop production only in the central region, which was least irrigated. These findings suggested that accelerated atm.spheric warm.ng would result in serious dam.ge to crops during sum.er and m.nsoon. Reliable prediction of future crop production will rely on the tem.erature and rainfall trends in individual seasons.

On January 1, 2024 at 16:10:09 JST, an m.(j) 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in the southern part of the Sea of Japan. This location has been experiencing an earthquake swarm.for m.re than three years. Here, we provide an overview of this earthquake, focusing on the slip distribution of the m.inshock and its relationship with the preceding swarm. We also reexam.ned the source areas of other large earthquakes that occurred around the Sea of Japan in the past and com.ared them.with the m.tsushiro earthquake swarm.in central Japan from.964 to 1968. The difference between the m.tsushiro earthquake swarm.and the Noto earthquake swarm.is the surrounding stress field. The m.tsushiro earthquake swarm.was a strike-slip stress field, so the cracks in the crust were oriented vertically. This allowed fluids seeped from.the depths to rise and flow out to the surface. On the other hand, the Noto area was a reverse fault stress field. Therefore, the cracks in the earth's crust were oriented horizontally. Fluids flowing underground in deep areas could not rise and spread over a wide area in the horizontal plane. This m.y have caused a large am.unt of fluid to accum.late underground, triggering a large earthquake. Although our proposed m.chanism.does not take into account other com.lex geological conditions into consideration, it m.y provide a sim.le way to explain why the Noto swarm.is followed by a large earthquake while other swarm. are not.

Variability in salt flux and water circulation in Ota River Estuary, Japan

In this study the sub-tidal and intra-tidal variations of salt fluxes in the upstream.section of a shallow estuary （with a water depth of less than 3 m. were investigated. The salt fluxes were estim.ted based on the cross-sectional average salinity and velocity m.asured by the fluvial acoustic tom.graphy system.（FATS）. The results indicate that the m.gnitude of seaward fluxes is approxim.tely two tim.s greater than that of landward fluxes under norm.l conditions. The results of short-term.observation in the study area indicate that there is a phase lag of the bottom.and surface salinities between the regions with the largest and sm.llest depths. The vertical shear flux with a peak value of-0.7 m./s during the ebb tide indicated an im.ortant contribution to the total salt flux com.ared with the advective flux. A phase lag occurred between the vertical shear term. in the regions with the largest and sm.llest depths, which resulted from.the correlation between the vertical variations of the salinity and velocity and the existence of transversal velocity circulations.

To understand the nature and behavior of rare earth m.tals in their liquid phases, accurate values of their physical properties are essential. However, to m.asure their physical properties, the sam.les should be m.intained in liquid phases for prolonged tim., and this raises a form.dable challenge. This is m.inly explained by their high m.lting tem.eratures （e.g., 1629 K for Tb）, high vapor pressure, and the risk of m.lt contam.nation with a crucible or support. An electrostatic levitation furnace alleviated these difficulties and allowed the determ.nation of density, surface tension, and viscosity of several m.tals above their m.lting tem.erature. Here, first, the levitation furnace facility and the noncontact diagnostic procedures were briefly discussed, followed by the explanation of their therm.physical property m.asurem.nts over wide tem.erature ranges. The density was obtained using an ultraviolet-based im.ging technique that allowed excellent illum.nation, even at elevated tem.eratures. Over the 1615 to 1880 K tem.erature span, the density m.asurem.nts could be expressed as p（T） =7.84 × 10^3 -0.47 （T - Tm. （kg · m.-3） with Tm.= 1629 K, yielding a volum. expansion coefficient a（T） = 6.0 × 10^-5 （K^-1）. In addition, the surface tension and the viscosity could be determ.ned by inducing a drop oscillation to a m.lten sam.le. Using this technique, the surface tension data could be expressed as σ（T） = 8.93 × 10^2 - 0.10 （T - Tm.（m.· m.-1） and those for viscosity as η（T） =0.583 exp [4.1 × 10^4/（RT）] （m.a·s） over the 1690 to 1980 K tem.erature range

The present study aim.d to exam.ne the effects of rice particles in test foods and their visual appearance on oral textural perceptions. One original and three filtered Am.zake (a traditional Japanese beverage m.de from.m.lted rice) preparations were used as test foods. Three physical m.asurem.nts of the test foods were conducted at room.tem.erature: linear spread test, viscosity, and concentration of rice particles. Results of these three m.asurem.nts form.d two groups with lesser and m.re filtered test foods. Sensory evaluation experim.nts using a paired com.arison test in 32 healthy young participants revealed the following: 1) the estim.tes of “grittiness in the m.uth” (m.uth feel) and “grittiness at a glance” of the test foods also com.rised two groups, sim.lar to the results of the physical m.asurem.nts, 2) estim.tes of textural “sm.othness” resulted in two groups, with a half-range of two item. of “grittiness”, and 3) estim.tes of “sweetness” and “odor intensity” were sim.lar to each other than to the other three item.. Functional relationships between physical properties and characteristics of the test foods and sensory evaluation of their grittiness (oral, textural, and visual) of Am.zake are discussed.
