Magnetic Particle Imaging for Magnetic Hyperthermia Treatment: Visualization and Quantification of the Intratumoral Distribution and Temporal Change of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Vivo

Purpose: Magnetic hyperthermia treatment (MHT) is a strategy for cancer therapy using the tem-perature rise of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Re-cently, a new imaging method called magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been introduced. MPI allows imaging of the spatial distribution of MNPs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of visualizing and quantifying the intratumoral distribution and temporal change of MNPs and predicting the therapeutic effect of MHT using MPI. Materials and Methods: Colon-26 cells (1 × 106 cells) were implanted into the backs of eight-week-old male BALB/c mice. When the tumor volume reached approximately 100 mm3, mice were divided into untreated (n = 10) and treated groups (n = 27). The tumors in the treated group were directly injected with MNPs (Resovist?) with iron concentrations of 500 mM (A, n = 9), 400 mM (B, n = 8), and 250 mM (C, n = 10), respectively, and MHT was performed using an AMF with a frequency of 600 kHz and a peak amplitude of 3.5 kA/m. The mice in the treated group were scanned using our MPI scanner immediately before, immediately after, 7 days, and 14 days after MHT. We drew a region of interest (ROI) on the tumor in the MPI image and calculated the average, maximum, and total MPI values and the number of pixels by taking the threshold value for extracting the contour as 40% of the maximum MPI value (pixel value) within the ROI. These parameters in the untreated group were taken as zero. We also measured the relative tumor volume growth (RTVG) defined by (V-V0)/V0, where V0 and V are the tumor volumes immediately before and after MHT, respectively. Results: The average, maximum, and total MPI values decreased up to 7 days after MHT and remained almost constant thereafter in all groups, whereas the number of pixels tended to increase with time. Usefulness of Magnetic Particle Imaging for Predicting the Therapeutic Effect of Magnetic Hyperthermia

Purpose: To investigate the usefulness of magnetic particle imaging (MPI) for predicting the therapeutic effect of magnetic hyperthermia (MH). Materials and Methods: First, we performed phantom experiments to investigate the relationship between the MPI value and the temperature rise of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). The MPI value was defined as the pixel value of the transverse image reconstructed from the third-harmonic signals. Samples filled with various iron concentrations of MNPs (Resovist®) were prepared and were imaged using our MPI scanner. These samples were also heated using the AMF, and the specific loss power (SLP) and volume-specific loss power (vSLP) were calculated from the initial slope of the time-dependent temperature rise. Second, we performed animal experiments using tumor-bearing mice, which were divided into untreated (n = 10) and treated groups (n = 20). The tumors in the treated group were injected with Resovist®?at an iron concentration of 250 mM (n = 10) or 500 mM (n = 10), and received MH for 20 min, during which the temperatures in the tumor and rectum were measured. The relative tumor volume growth (RTVG) was calculated from (V15 -?V0)/V0, where V0 and V15 represented the tumor volume on day 0 and day 15 after MH, respectively. Results: In phantom experiments, the MPI value had significant correlations with the iron concentration of MNPs (r = 0.997), temperature rise (r = 0.981), and vSLP (r = 0.961). In animal experiments, the MPI value had significant correlations with the temperature rise in the tumor (r = 0.731) and RTVG (r = ﹣0.687). Conclusion: Our preliminary results suggest that MPI is useful for predicting the therapeutic effect of MH.

The optimized interface engineering of VS_2 as cathodes for high performance all-solid-state lithium-ion battery

Vanadium sulfide was first employed as a cathode for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries and demonstrated superior compatibility with the solid electrolyte, in which the interface between the electrode and solid electrolyte has been optimized. Consequently, it can exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in the voltage range of 1.5–3.5 V. Moreover, the ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal the incomplete conversion mechanism to account for the superior electrochemical performance. Specifically, the electrode of VS_(2) exhibits a large capacity of 268.1 mA h g^(-1) at 50 mA g^(-1)(rate performance). At a current density of 100 mA g^(-1), a large reversible capacity of 215 mA h g^(-1) can be maintained after 100 cycles,indicating extraordinary cycling stability, making it a promising electrode for high energy density all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Identification of some benproperine metabolites in humans and investigation of their antitussive effect

Unstable Head-Flow Characteristic Generation Mechanism of a Low Specific Speed Mixed Flow Pump

This paper treats the flow instabilities in a mixed flow pump with a vaned diffuser. Test pump has a positive slope of a head-flow performance curve at 65% flow rate of BEP (Best Efficiency Point) because of a rotating stall. Dynamic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and pressure fluctuation measurements are used for investigating the propagation mechanism of a rotating stall. It was found that unstable performance was caused by periodical large scale abrupt backflow generated from the vaned diffuser to the outlet of impeller. Further, the relation between the static pressure at the inlet of diffuser vane and the internal flow condition was clarified. From these experimental results, in order to improve the positive slope of a head-flow performance curve, to suppress the growth of strong vortex toward the inlet of diffuser vane was proved to be a key point.

Glucuronidation of Two Novel Metabolites of Benproperine with Trichloroacetimidate Donor

The glucuronide metabolites of benproperine were synthesized from mono-hydroxylate metabolites of benproperine that were treated with methyl （2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-1-O-tfichloroacetimidoyl ） -α-D-glucopyranuronate with BF3 · Eh O as the promoter followed by basic hydrolyzation with Na2 CO3. The form of basic acceptors, the order of addition, and the promoter are all important variables in this glucuronidation. The salt form of the basic acceptor was found to be better than its free form for glucuronidation with a Lewis acid as the promoter. Two mono-hydroxylated benproperines were synthesized from 2-benzylphenol in three steps.

Effect of antioxidant activity of caffeic acid with cyclodextrins using ground mixture method

In the current study, we prepared a ground mixture(GM) of caffeic acid(CA) with α-cyclodextrin(αCD) and with β-cyclodextrin(βCD), and then comparatively assessed the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacities of these GMs. Phase solubility diagrams indicated that both CA/αCD and CA/βCD formed a complex at a molar ratio of 1/1. In addition, stability constants suggested that CA was more stable inside the cavity of αCD than inside the cavity of βCD. Results of powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD) indicated that the characteristic diffraction peaks of CA and CD disappeared and a halo pattern was produced by the GMs of CA/αCD and CA/βCD(molar ratios = 1/1). Dissolution testing revealed that both GMs had a higher rate of dissolution than CA alone did. Based on the1 H-1 H NOESY NMR spectra for the GM of CA/αCD, the vinylene group of the CA molecule appeared to be included from the wider to the narrower rim of the αCD ring. Based on spectra for the GM of CA/βCD, the aromatic ring of the CA molecule appeared to be included from the wider to the narrower rim of the βCD ring. This suggests that the structures of the CA inclusion complexes differed between those involving αCD rings and those involving βCD rings. Results of a DPPH radical-scavenging activity test indicated that the GM of CA/αCD had a higher antioxidant capacity than that of the GM of CA/βCD. The differences in the antioxidant capacities of the GMs of CA/αCD and CA/βCD are presumably due to differences in stability constants and structures of the inclusion complexes.
