Sociodemographic, Clinical and Quality of Life Aspects of People Aged over 50 Years Living with HIV/AIDS

Introduction: In the last few years, there has been a growth in the number of cases of people with HIV/AIDS aged 50 years and older. This is explained by the inclusion of antiretroviral therapy, increased survival of patients as well as by the growth in the number of infected people in this age group. Objective: To analyze the association between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics with the QOL of people aged 50 years or older living with HIV/AIDS. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study conducted in the outpatient clinic of a reference hospital in Natal, Brazil. The sample consisted of 50 subjects, aged over 50, seropositive for HIV and with cognitive conditions to answer the interview. Authors used sociodemographic and clinical evaluation tools and the WHOQOL-HIV BREF scale. Results: Sociodemographic: respondents’ average age was 57.32 years, 58% male, 38% brown, 26% incomplete primary education, 46% single, 56% retired, 70% with a monthly income of 1 to 2 minimum wages and 70% Catholic. Clinical: 60% have a partner without the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS;62% had not been hospitalized previously;66% did not have opportunistic infections;40% indicated that there was a change in the physiological sexual function after the onset of the disease. Quality of life: people living with HIV/AIDS had low scores in QOL domains. When associating sociodemographic and clinical aspects, it was observed that they had associations with QOL, especially in regard to education, income, religion, change in sexual function and feelings. Conclusion: The spiritual domain was highlighted with the best performance, collaborating to facing, hope and resilience of HIV/AIDS.

Background:The Kato-Katz technique is recommended worldwide for the diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis,detecting parasite eggs in feces of infected ***,new tests have been developed in order to facilitate diagnosis,*** detection of specific antigens secreted by schistosomes,such as the circulating cathodic antigen(CCA).The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen test(POC-CCA)compared to the Kato-Katz technique in a low prevalence area in the Amazon Region,located in the municipality of Primavera,State of Para,***:Positivity rates of the POC-CCA test and the Kato-Katz technique were *** sensitivity,specificity,accuracy and kappa coefficient were determined by comparing both *** reference standard was established using 16 Kato-Katz slides,12 of the first fecal sample,two of the second and two of the third *** study also included the concordance between POC-CCA results and different numbers and combinations of Kato-Katz ***:The prevalence of schistosomiasis according to the reference standard or POC-CCA test reached a rate of 9.4%or 23.9%,respectively,among a total of 372 *** positivity rates by the Kato-Katz technique increased from 2.4 to 9.4%,according to the increase in the number of slides examined and fecal samples colleaed.A sensitivity of 55.6%,specificity 76.9%,accuracy 76%and k coefficient of 0.06 was observed by comparing one slide of the first sample and *** 6 slides from three different samples,two slides of each,with POC-CCA resulted in a sensitivity of 583%,specificity 78.4%,accuracy 77%and k coefficient of ***,the comparison of 16 slides from three different samples with POC-CCA revealed a sensitivity of 65.7%,specificity 80.4%,accuracy 79%,and k coefficient of ***:The immunochromatographic test has the potential to be an important tool to combat schistosomiasis because of its practi

Senior Citizens’Cultural Activity and Participation in Community Life

Objective: This study has the objective to know the cultural activities of the senior citizen and their participation in community life as encouraged by Primary Health Care professionals. Methods: This is a quantitative study that was performed on 130 senior citizens in the city of Santa Cruz, in the Brazil state of Rio Grande do Norte. Results: The participation of senior citizens in groups is very beneficial because it increases their autonomy and self-esteem, socialization, well-being and consequently, which leads to a higher quality of life. However, there were some failures in the promotion of healthy aging and the adoption of strategic activities. Conclusions: Based on this observation, it is expected that this study can provide resources for the primary health care professionals to try to stimulate senior citizens by carrying out cultural activities that value and increase their potential, quality of life and self-esteem and, thus, promote active and healthy aging.

Assessment of Comprehensive Health Care of the Elderly in Primary Health Care

Objective: To assess comprehensive care in the elderly population, as well as the quality of care in Primary Health Care. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted from July to december 2012, in the city of Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. A sample of 130 subjects chosen by drawn was calculated, and data collection was performed at their homes. Results: There were interviewed 130 people, 92 (70.8%) women and 38 men (29.2%), with a minimum age of 60 and maximum of 96 years, with a mean of 72.8, median of 72.0 and a standard deviation of 8.3. Regarding the quality of care ratings of the PHC team, 48.5% (n = 63) of respondents stated this to be good, while 32.3% (n = 42) rated this as fair. Conclusions: In this perspective, one of the most appreciated meanings that were given to comprehensive care by health care professionals refers to holistic knowledge of each patient, resulting in the non-fragmentation of care. Thus, it is noticed that comprehensiveness has some weaknesses that need to be corrected, which shows the need for education and training of professionals assigned to primary health care services.

Maternal and Child Care Assessment Focused on Prenatal Care and Birth

Objective: This study aims at assessing maternal and child care provided from prenatal to birth, so that it can reveal the weaknesses and potentialities of prenatal program in order to guide the development of strategic plans. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted in the city of Santa Cruz, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, from November 2012 to February 2013. The sample consisted of 200 women, chosen by draw, mothers of children under two years old who had attended the Primary Health Care System. The study used a semi-structured questionnaire used by the Ministry of Health. Our research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, under the approval No. 311.613. Results: It was found that most mothers were rated from good to very good in the quality of care during prenatal and birth. As to the performance of prenatal and birth care services, most women performed those services under the municipality’s Public Health System, and the prenatal care primarily under Basic Health Care Units. Conclusion: In this assessment study, indicators regarding maternal and child care provided during the prenatal period were found to be positive, which contributes to the reduction of maternal and child mortality. The study also shows that Primary Health Care is essential to ensuring an effective, humane and comprehensive health care.

Systemic mastocytosis: A rare cause of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension

Mastocytosis is a clonal neoplastic disorder of the mast cells(MC) that can be limited to the skin(cutaneous mastocytosis) or involve one or more extracutaneous organs(systemic mastocytosis). The clinical manifestations of mastocytosis are heterogeneous ranging from indolent disease with a long-term survival to a highly aggressive neoplasm with survival of about 6 mo. Although liver involvement in aggressive systemic mastocytosis(ASM) is relatively common, the development of portal hypertension with or without cirrhosis is rare. We report a case of ASM without skin involvement in a 72-year-old caucasian male who presented with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension based on clinical, analytical, imagiological and endoscopic findings. Given the hematological picture, the correct diagnosis was established based on ancillary tests for MC using bone marrow aspirates and biopsy. Extensive involvement of the liver and gastrointestinal tract was histologically documented. The disease progressed rapidly and severe pancytopenia and recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding became the dominant problem. This case illustrates the challenge in establishing a diagnosis of ASM especially when the clinical picture is atypical and without skin involvement. Gastroenterologists should consider infiltrative disease, particularly systemic mastocytosis, as a differential diagnosis in a clinical case of portal hypertension of unknown etiology.

Objective: The present work aims to evaluate the impact of the activities of nursing consultations on health conditions of children served in Clínica de Enfermagem Salvando Vidas com Educa??o. Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, realized from January through december 2012, at the Clínica de Enfermagem (Nursing Clinic), in the Santa Cruz County, Rio Grande do Norte’s countryside, Brazil. Results: The obtained results showed a significant correlation between the type of pathology and final treatment proven by the value of p = 0.000;as for assessed 60%, more than half were discharged;the most prevalent diseases were the association between cutaneous and gastric with 11% who were discharged and, lastly, the association between gastric and respiratory with 7% discharged. Conclusion: Thus, the activities developed by the project are not restricted to the examination during the nursing consultation, since educational activities are planned from the data obtained in those consultations.

Spontaneous Mammary Carcinomas in Female Dogs:Association between the Immunohistochemical degree of Aggressiveness of Tumors,Intensity of DNA Damage and Residues of Pyrethroids

Diagnosis and biological behavior of breast cancer of female dog represent one of the biggest challenges facing the Veterinarian in recent years. Due to its exponential growth and the degree of aggressiveness, the exact cause of this tumor is probably multifactorial and it is believed that may suffer influence from environmental factors. Among the suspected environmental contaminants are the pyrethroids. Aiming to investigate the participation of pyrethroids in tumorigenesis in female dogs, a study was conducted using 50 female dogs, 22 were positive for simple breast carcinoma (Group I), 18 with a diagnosis of complex breast carcinoma (Group II) and 10 negative (Group III) for breast cancer. In order to detect DNA damage, the Comet assay was performed on mammary samples of these animals, which also had samples submitted to the technique of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), which aimed to quantify the concentration of pyrethroids. The results of HPLC of each animal were compared with those obtained by the Comet assay analysis of variance and the means were compared by the test groups “Student T” at the significance level of p ￡ 0.05. despite presenting correlation between the amount of DNA damage and tumor aggressiveness, no statistical differences were found in the DNA damage of different histologic types of breast carcinoma. As for pyrethroids, even these were detected in 22% of tumor tissues and peritumoral fat, there was no difference in DNA damage between cells exposed and not exposed to environmental contaminant.

Metabolic syndrome and colorectal neoplasms:An ominous association

In Brazil,schistosomiasis occurrence is related to the presence of the etiological agent Schistosoma *** presence of mollusks for Biomphalaria genus is a necessary condition for development of the parasite *** Parástate,the species ***,***,*** and *** have already been identified,with reports of the last two occurring in Belé*** aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of Biomphalaria species in Belém,Pará,Brazil,identifying risk areas for schistosomiasis *** malacological surveys were carried out between September 2013 and October 2017 in 35 neighborhoods of Belé*** collection points were georeferenced using a Global Positioning System(GPS)receiver and the Kernel density Estimation(Kde)was used to the spatial *** mollusks,after measurement,were exposed to light to verify the presence of *** ***,mollusks were sacrificed and fixed for dissection and morphological identification of *** surveys resulted in a total of 10,803 mollusks collected,of which 9,367(86.70%)specimens were *** the analyzed mollusks,5,820(62.14%)were identified as *** and 3,547(37.86%)as *** presence of the parasite was observed in 208(2.22%)specimens,all *** mollusks were found in six neighborhoods:Guamá(51 mollusks/24.5%),Sacramenta(47 mollusks/22.6%),Telégrafo(47 mollusks/22.6%),Terra Firme(36 mollusks/17.3%),Condor(20 mollusks/9.6%)and Barreiro(7 mollusks/3.4%).This study confirms that *** species actively participates as intermediate host in the disease maintenance in Belé*** Kde allowed to analyze the spatial distribution of collection sites and consequently to determine possible risk areas of schistosomiasis transmission in *** development of maps identifying sites with schistosomiasis positive snails may support efforts of this municipality by directing activities related to endemic disease control.
