Mating behavior of Psammotettix alienus （Hemiptera： Cicadellidae）

The Wheat dwarf virus, the causal agent of the wheat dwarf disease, is trans- mitted by leafhoppers from the genus Psammotettix and currently the main protection strategy is based on the use of insecticide treatments. Sustainable management strategies for insect vectors should include methods that are targeted to disrupt reproductive behavior and here we investigated the mating behavior of Psammotettix alineus （Dahlbom 1850） in order to determine the role of vibrational signals in intra-specific communication and pair formation. Both genders spontaneously emit species- and sex-specific calling songs that consisted of regularly repeated pulse trains and differ primarily in pulse train duration and pulse repetition time. Females preferred the conspecific male calling song. After a coordinated exchange of pulse trains, the male approached the stationary female. During the close range courtship and also immediately prior to copulatory attempts distinct male vibrational signals associated with wing flapping and wing vibrations were recorded from the substrate. In the presence of a receptive female, competing males emitted vibrational signals most likely aimed to interfere with male-female interaction. Mated females re- gained sexual receptivity after they laid eggs. Although results suggest that the viruliferous status of insects may have an effect on vibrational songs, our current results did not reveal a significant effect of virus on leafhopper performance in mating behavior. However, this study also suggests, that detailed understanding ofplant-vecto^virus interactions relevant for vector mating behavior is essential for trying new approaches in developing future control practices against plant viruses transmitted by insect vectors.

Role of neurotrophic factors in enhancing linear axonal growth of ganglionic sensory neurons in vitro

Neurotrophins play a major role in the regulation of neuronal growth such as neurite sprouting or regeneration in response to nerve injuries. The role of nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in maintaining the survival of peripheral neurons remains poorly understood. In regenerative medicine, different modalities have been investigated for the delivery of growth factors to the injured neurons, in search of a suitable system for clinical applications. This study was to investigate the influence of nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor on the growth of neurites using two in vitro models of dorsal root ganglia explants and dorsal root ganglia-derived primary cell dissociated cultures. Quantitative data showed that the total neurite length and tortuosity were differently influenced by trophic factors. Nerve growth factor and, indirectly, brain-derived neurotrophic factor stimulate the tortuous growth of sensory fibers and the formation of cell clusters. Neurotrophin-3, however, enhances neurite growth in terms of length and linearity allowing for a more organized and directed axonal elongation towards a peripheral target compared to the other growth factors. These findings could be of considerable importance for any clinical application of neurotrophic factors in peripheral nerve regeneration. Ethical approval was obtained from the Regione Piemonte Animal Ethics Committee ASLTO1(file # 864/2016-PR) on September 14, 2016.

Near-field launching and mapping unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons using an automated dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope

The spatial distribution of electromagnetic fields emitted from the aperture tip of a scanning near-field optical microscope(SNOM), which is called the emission pattern, depends on the geometry of the apex and the material composition of the tip’s coating. In previous works, experimental measurements of the emission pattern from the aperture tip were performed mostly in the far field. Moreover, the corresponding theoretical models were also developed based on these far-field measurements. Here, we have used the automated dual-tip SNOM to systematically characterize the emission from the aperture tip in the near field. In this regard, we have considered three different pairs of excitation and detection tips with distinct geometries. The emission patterns of the excitation tips were mapped using detection tips. Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) at the surface of a gold platelet were launched by an excitation tip and measured in the near field by the detection tip. The experimental results were numerically reproduced by means of the Bethe–Bouwkamp model. This work puts into evidence the applicability of the automated dual-tip SNOM as the only available characterization technique to measure the emission from aperture tips in the near field. The reported asymmetric SPP radiation patterns can find applications in photonic integrated circuits or in biological and chemical sensing.

Disrupted NF-κB activation after partial hepatectomy does not impair hepatocyte proliferation in rats

AIM： To analyze the effects of NF-kB inhibition by antioxidant pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate （PDTC） or TNF inhibitor pentoxifylline （PTX） on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy （PH）. METHODS： Saline, PDTC or PTX were injected 1 h before PH and rats were killed at 0.5 and 24 h after PH. Several control groups were used for comparison （injection control groups）. RESULTS： Compared to saline injected controls, NF-kB activation was absent 0.5 h after PH in rats treated with PDTC or PTX. At 24 h after PH, DNA synthesis and PCNA expression were identical in treated and control rats and thus occurred irrespectively of the status of NF-kB activation at 0.5 h. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 （Stat3） acUvatJon was observed already 0.5 h after PH in saline, PDTC or PTX group and was similar to Stat3 activation in response to injection without PH. CONCLUSION： These data strongly suggest that （1） NF-kB p65/p50 DNA binding produced in response to PH is not a signal necessary to initiate the liver regeneration, （2） star3 activation is a stress response unrelated to the activation of NF-kB. In conclusion, NF-kB activation is not critically required for the process of liver regeneration after PH.

TNF-α Induces Transient Resistance to Fas-Induced Apoptosis in Eosinophilic Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells

Tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α） has been recognized as an activator of nuclear factor kB （NF-kB）, a factor implicated in the protection of many cell types from apoptosis. We and others have presented evidence to suggest that Fas-induced apoptosis may be an important aspect of the resolution of inflammation, and that delayed resolution of inflammation may be directly associated with NF-kB-dependent resistance to Fas. Because TNF-α activates NF-kB in many cell types including inflammatory cells such as eosinophils, we examined effects of TNF-α signaling on the Fas-mediated killing of an eosinophilic cell line AML14. While agonist anti-Fas （CHII） treatment induced apoptosis in AML14 cells, no significant cell death occurred in response to TNF-α alone. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay （EMSA） revealed that TNF-α induced NF-kB transactivation in AMLI4 cells in a time- and dose-dependent fashion, and subsequent supershift assays indicated that the translocated NF-kB was the heterodimer p65 （RelA）/p50. Pre-treatment of cells with TNF-α dramatically decreased the CHll-induced cell death in a transient fashion, accompanied by suppression of activation of caspase-8 and caspase-3 activation. Inhibition of NF-kB transactivation by inhibitors, BAY 11-7085 and parthenolide, reversed the suppression of Fas-mediated apoptosis by TNF-α. Furthermore, TNF-α up-regulated X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein （XIAP） transiently and XIAP levels were correlated with the temporal pattern of TNF-α protection against Fas-mediated apoptosis. This finding suggested that TNF-α may contribute to the prolonged survival of inflammatory cells by suppression of Fas-mediated apoptosis, the process involved with NF-kB transactivation, anti-apoptotic XIAP up-regulation and caspase suppression. There has been a growing interest over the past few years in the impact of male nutrition on fertility. Infertility has been linked to male overweight or obesity, and conventional semen parameter values seem to be altered in case of high body mass index （BMI）. A few studies assessing the impact of BMI on sperm DNA integrity have been published, but they did not lead to a strong consensus. Our objective was to explore further the relationship between sperm DNA integrity and BMI, through a 3-year multicentre study. Three hundred and thirty male partners in subfertile couples were included. Using the terminal uridine nick-end labelling （TUNEL） assay, we observed an increased rate of sDerm DNA damage in obese men （odds ratio （95% confidence interval）： 2.5 （1.2-5.1））.

Reconstruction of nerve root sheaths for sacral extradural spinal meningeal cysts with spinal nerve root fibers

This study analyzed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of sacral extradural spinal meningeal cysts with spinal nerve root fibers treated by reconstruction of the nerve root *** relationships between the cysts and spinal nerve root fibers were examined microscopically,the cysts were partially excised,and the defects were oversewn to reconstruct the nerve root *** Improved Japanese Orthopedic Association(IJOA)scoring system was used to evaluate preoperative and postoperative neurological ***-eight patients were included in this study,with a mean age of 41.4±15.57 *** mean IJOA score was 18.8±1.32 preoperatively and 19.6±0.65 postoperatively,which was a significant difference(t=–3.77,P=0.001).These results indicate a significant improvement in neurological function after *** most significant improvement in neurological function was sensation(z=–2.86,P=0.004),followed by bowel/bladder function(z=–2.31,P=0.02).

Petrography of alluvial sands as a past and present environmental indicator:Case of the Loire River(France)

Four sample sets of the Upper and Middle Loire river sands were analyzed in order to study the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on their petrographic composition in space(on an 800 km stretch) and *** was determined by modal analysis of three sand-size fractions using a polarizing optical microscope and calculated for each sample("standard sand" = Sst).The watershed is composed mainly of endogenic(Massif Central) and sedimentary(southern Parisian Basin) rocks.B-set sands collected in channels for different water flows in 1996 show that Sst compositions vary by only 5%.Present-day sands in the Upper Loire and Middle Loire have very high petrographic immaturity comparing to others worldwide fluvial sands,although bio-climatic conditions favor sand maturation by source-rock weathering in the *** shows the strong impact of the Massif Central on sediment yield due to relief rejuvenation as a consequence of the formation of the Alps during the *** sands stored during the Weichselian and the Holocene in the Middle Loire floodplain,although partly weathered since their deposition,show higher inputs from the endogenic rocks of the Massif Central than present-day *** can be explained by Weichselian periglacial conditions and the development of crop farming since the Neolithic,which favored mechanical erosion,particularly in the Massif Central which is characterized by a cold,humid climate and steep *** upstream-downstream change in the composition of presently deposited sand is low in the diked *** shows however that basalt and some heavy mineral grains are vulnerable to abrasion during transport and indicates a marked sediment yield from ancient sediment stored in the *** is in line with the high incision of the river bed over the last 150 years partly due to dam construction and aggregate mining.
