Application of engineered compressible inclusions to mitigating soilstructure interaction issues in integral bridge abutments

The thermally induced cyclic loading on integral bridge abutments causes soil deformation and lateral stress ratcheting behind the abutment wall due to the expansion and contraction of the bridge *** forward and backward movements of the abutment in response to the expansion/contraction of the bridge deck lead to the formation of settlement trough and surface heaving,frequently creating a bump at the bridge approach and increasing the lateral earth pressure behind the *** to reduce the bump at the bridge approach,including several treatment methods,such as compaction of selected backfill materials,grout injection,installation of approach slab,and using a layer of compressible inclusion material behind the abutment were ***,these guidelines still lack sufficient design details and there are limited experimental findings to validate design *** this paper,the use of engineered compressible materials to alleviate the lateral earth pressure ratcheting and settlement at the bridge approach is *** comparative study is presented for the soil-inclusion,material-structure and soil-structure interactions for an integral bridge under three different backfill conditions,i.e.(a)sand,(b)sand and EPS geofoam,and(c)sand and Infinergy®.The study was conducted in a special large-scale test chamber with a semi-scale abutment to gain better insights into the soil-structure interaction(SSI).The kinematics and rearrangement of the soil during the cyclic loading have been investigated to identify the mitigating effects of compressible *** comparative study indicates that both compressible inclusions perform comparatively well,however,Infinergy®is a better alternative than the medium-density EPS geofoam,as it works more effectively to reduce the backfill settlement and heaving as well as soil ratcheting effects under cyclic translational movement.

Centropages tenuiremis is a species with a wide distribution range in disturbed coastal ***,due to a lack of dietary information,it remains unclear as to how they maintain such dominance in fluctuating *** this study,*** was collected from the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant both in inlet and outfall regions at 06:00,12:00 and 18:00 on April 27,2011 and their in situ diet was analyzed using a PCR protocol targeting 18S ribosomal ***-four species of prey organisms were identified totally,including Dinophyta,Baciliariophyta,Viridiplantae,Rhizaria,Apicomplexa,Chordata,Mollusca,Arthropoda and Fungi,indicating an obvious omnivorous feeding habit of *** tenuiremis obviously exhibited spatial and temporal variations in diet *** plant prey(land plants and phytoplankton)were consumed in the morning(~50%),while more animal prey(metazoans and protozoans)were ingested at midday and night(60%–70%).Furthermore,a more diverse diet was detected in the outfall region(10–11 taxa),where the temperatures were relatively higher and more fluctuating,than in the control region(5–10 taxa).This finding indicated that *** could potentially expand its food spectrum under stressful ***,*** exhibited phytoplankton preference(58.62%–67.64%)in the outfall region with a lower omnivory index(0.27–0.35)than in the control region(0.51–0.95).However,phytoplankton density was lower than that in the control region,suggesting a possible herbivorous tendency of *** under elevated temperatures to balance the energy acquirement and feeding *** flexible food choices of *** observed here could effectively buffer environmental fluctuations and might be an important survival strategy in coastal ecosystems.

Taking the effect of finite soil layers below pile end into account,the longitudinal dynamic response of pile undergoing dynamic loading in layered soil was theoretically ***,finite soil layers below pile end are modeled as virtual soil pile whose cross-section area is the same as that of the pile and the soil layers surrounding the pile are described by the plane strain ***,by virtue of Laplace transform and impedance function transfer method,the analytical solution of longitudinal dynamic response at the pile head in frequency domain is ***,the semi-analytical solution in time domain undergoing half-cycle sine pulse at the pile head is obtained by means of inverse Laplace *** on these solutions,a parametric study is conducted to analyze emphatically the effects of parameters of soil below pile end on velocity admittance and reflected wave signals at the pile ***,a comparison with other models with different supporting conditions from soil below pile end is performed to verify the model presented.

Cancer has become a leading cause of death and constitutes an enormous *** is a principle treatment modality used alone or in combination with other forms of therapy,with 50%–70%of cancer patients receiving radiotherapy at some point during their *** has been suggested that traditional radiotherapy(daily fractions of approximately 1.8–2 Gy over several weeks)might select for radioresistant tumor cell sub-populations,which,if not sterilized,give rise to local treatment failure and distant ***,the challenge is to develop treatment strategies and schedules to eradicate the resistant subpopulation of tumorigenic cells rather than the predominant sensitive tumor cell *** continued technological advances including enhanced conformal treatment technology,radiation oncologists can increasinglymaximize the dose to tumors while sparing adjacent normal tissues,to limit toxicity and damage to the *** dose conformality also facilitates changes in treatment schedules,such as changes in dose per treatment fraction and number of treatment fractions,to enhance the therapeutic *** example,the recently developed large dose per fraction treatment schedules(hypofractionation)have shown clinical advantage over conventional treatment schedules in some tumor *** studies suggest that following large acute doses of radiation,recurrent tumors,presumably sustained by the most resistant tumor cell populations,may in fact be equally or more radiation sensitive than the primary *** this review,we summarize the related advances in radiotherapy,including the increasing understanding of the molecular mechanisms of radioresistance,and the targeting of thesemechanisms with potent small molecule inhibitors,whichmay selectively sensitize tumor cells to radiation.

BACKGROUND Neoangiogenesis is one of the key pathogenetic mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Modulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) seems to be a possible adjuvant therapy for HCC, due to the antiangiogenic and anti-fibrogenic activity of these drugs. AIM To elucidate the role of ARBs and ACE-Is in HCC. METHODS We performed an electronic search of the literature using the most accessed online databases (PubMed, Cochrane library, Scopus and Web of Science), entering the query terms "angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors" OR "ACE inhibitors" OR "ACE-I" AND "hepatocarcinoma*" OR "hepatocellular carcinoma;moreover "angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers" OR "ARBs" AND "hepatocarcinoma*" OR "hepatocellular carcinoma". Eligibility criteria were:(1) prospective or retrospective clinical studies;(2) epidemiological studies;and (3) experimental studies conducted in vivo or in vitro. Abstracts, conference papers, and reviews were excluded a priori. We limited our literature search to articles published in English, in peer-reviewed *** Thirty-one studies were selected. Three interventional studies showed that ACEIs had a significant protective effect on HCC recurrence only when used in combination with vitamin K or branched chain aminoacids, without a significant increase in overall survival. Of six retrospective observational studies, mainly focused on overall survival, only one demonstrated a prolonged survival in the ACE-Is group, whereas the two that also evaluated tumor recurrence showed conflicting results. All experimental studies displayed beneficial effects of RAS inhibitors on hepatocarcinogenesis. Numerous experimental studies, conducted either on animals and cell cultures, demonstrated the anti-angiogenetic and antifibrotic effect of ACE-Is and ARBs, thanks to the suppression of some cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor

We discuss a hardship in synthesis of heaviest super heavy elements in massive nuclei reactions due to the hindrance to complete fusion of reacting nuclei caused on the onset of quasifission process which strongly competes with complete fusion and due to the strong increase of fission yields along the de-excitation cascade of the compound nucleus in comparison with the evaporation residue *** hindrance to formation of compound nucleus and evaporation residue is determined by the characteristic of the entrance channel.

In this paper, a novel image encryption algorithm is presented based on self-cited pixel summation. With the classical mechanism of permutation plus diffusion, a pixel summation of the plain image is employed to make a gravity influence on the pixel positions in the permutation stage. Then, for each pixel in every step of the diffusion stage, the pixel summation calculated from the permuted image is updated. The values from a chaotic sequence generated by an intertwining logistic map are selected by this summation. Consequently, the keystreams generated in both stages are dependent on both the plain image and the permuted image. Because of the sensitivity of the chaotic map to its initial conditions and the plain-imagedependent keystreams, any tiny change in the secret key or the plain image would lead to a significantly different cipher image. As a result, the proposed encryption algorithm is immune to the known plaintext attack（KPA） and the chosen plaintext attack（CPA）. Moreover, experimental simulations and security analyses show that the proposed permutationdiffusion encryption scheme can achieve a satisfactory level of security.
