The 18th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate was held on 31 May through 2 June *** Antarctic Meteorological Research and Data Center hosted this hybrid workshop at the Pyle Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison,Wi,*** members of the Antarctic meteorological community gathered to present and discuss topics from scientific research to operational support within Antarctic meteorology and *** and early career professionals chaired various presentations and discussions while all attendees engaged to share results,build collaborative plans,and discuss further *** main workshop topics included updates on the current Automatic Weather Station(AWS)networks,challenges,and planning concerning Antarctic forecasting and operational services,Antarctic numerical modeling systems,observational applications and research,and Antarctic community and data *** six sessions,over 25 different presenters elaborated on their work in areas such as field season updates,atmospheric rivers,remote sensing,the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System(AMPS),and forecasting challenges due to data *** discussions resulted in several key outcomes and action items regarding fieldwork impacts,exploration of field techniques,observation coverage,and communication between operations and research *** workshops will provide opportunities for continued discussion on the evolution of the AWS network and operational needs while providing a venue to promote collaboration and cooperation for Antarctic meteorology and climate activities.

*** August 2022 marked the 17th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate(WAMC)which was held in a hybrid format at the Pyle Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison(UW-Madison)in Madison,Wi,*** workshop is the first partial in-person gathering since the 14th WAMC(Lazzara et al.,2018)as the 15th WAMC was canceled due to the COViD-19 pandemic,and the 16th WAMC(Bromwich et al.,2022)was purely *** members of the Antarctic meteorological community gathered at this meeting to present and discuss weather-related topics encompassing scientific research and support operations within Antarctic meteorology and *** conversations aimed to share and discuss results,future developments,and build collaborative plans.

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. On 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing CO_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of CO_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

The role of LRRK2 on PKA-NFκB pathway in microglia cells: implications for Parkinson’s disease

Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a gene linked to autosomal- dominantly inherited and sporadic Parkinson’s disease (PD) as a risk factor, encodes a large and complex protein with a dual enzymatic activity. LRRK2 contains several domains involved in protein-protein interactions, however, the presence of both a kinase and GTPase domain points to intracellular signaling functions (Marin, 2006). While LRRK2 has been linked to several molecular pathways important for neuronal activity (Martin et al., 2014), the observation that its expression is high in microglia has attracted the attention of different groups to understand whether LRRK2 dysfunctions in these cells may impact neuronal activity as secondary event.

A new species of Liagora, L. perennis sp. nov. from Hawai'i, is described. Unlike species of this genus in China, it is carpotetrasporangial, and at the place of expected carposporangia bears cruciately di-vided tetrasporangia, a detail which differentiates it from the usual species of Liagora without tetraspores that have been reported in China. Notes are provided on other Liagora species that have an impact on the taxonony of species found in China.

Bone remodeling:an operational process ensuring survival and bone mechanical competence

Bone remodeling replaces old and damaged bone with new bone through a sequence of cellular events occurring on the same surface without any change in bone shape. it was initially thought that the basic multicellular unit(BMU) responsible for bone remodeling consists of osteoclasts and osteoblasts functioning through a hierarchical sequence of events organized into distinct stages. However, recent discoveries have indicated that all bone cells participate in BMU formation by interacting both simultaneously and at different differentiation stages with their progenitors, other cells, and bone matrix constituents. Therefore,bone remodeling is currently considered a physiological outcome of continuous cellular operational processes optimized to confer a survival advantage. Bone remodeling defines the primary activities that BMUs need to perform to renew successfully bone structural units. Hence, this review summarizes the current understanding of bone remodeling and future research directions with the aim of providing a clinically relevant biological background with which to identify targets for therapeutic strategies in osteoporosis.

Despite advances in cancer therapeutics and the integration of personalized medicine,the development of chemoresistance in many patients remains a significant contributing factor to cancer *** treatment with chemotherapeutics,the disruption of homeostasis in cancer cells triggers the adaptive response which has emerged as a key resistance *** this review,we summarize the mechanistic studies investigating the three major components of the adaptive response,autophagy,endoplasmic reticulum(ER)stress signaling,and senescence,in response to cancer *** will discuss the development of potential cancer therapeutic strategies in the context of these adaptive resistance mechanisms,with the goal of stimulating research that may facilitate the development of effective cancer therapy.

No evidence of contagious yawning in the red-footed tortoise Geochelone carbonaria

Three hypotheses have attempted to explain the phenomenon of contagious yawning. it has been hypothesized that it is a fixed action pattern for which the releasing stimulus is the observation of another yawn, that it is the result of non-conscious mimicry emerging through close links between perception and action or that it is the result of empathy, involving the ability to engage in mental state attribution. This set of experiments sought to distinguish between these hypotheses by examining contagious yawning in a species that is unlikely to show nonconscious mimicry and empathy but does respond to social stimuli： the red-footed tortoise Geochelone carbonaria. A demonstrator tortoise was conditioned to yawn when presented with a red square-shaped stimulus. Observer tortoises were exposed to three conditions： observation of conditioned yawn, non demonstration control, and stimulus only control. We measured the number of yawns for each observer animal in each condition. There was no difference between conditions. Experiment 2 therefore increased the number of conditioned yawns presented. Again, there was no significant difference between conditions. it seemed plausible that the tortoises did not view the conditioned yawn as a real yawn and therefore a final experiment was run using video recorded stimuli. The observer tortoises were presented with three conditions： real yawn, conditioned yawns and empty background. Again there was no significant difference between conditions. We therefore conclude that the red-footed tortoise does not yawn in response to observing a conspecific yawn. This suggests that contagious yawning is not the result of a fixed action pattern but may involve more complex social processes [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 477-484, 2011].

Understanding the neural underpinning of human gait and balance is one of the most pertinent challenges for 21st-century translational neuroscience due to the profound impact that falls and mobility disturbances have on our aging *** and gait control does not happen automatically,as previously believed,but rather requires continuous involvement of central nervous *** effectively exert control over the body,the brain must integrate multiple streams of sensory information,including visual,vestibular,and somatosensory *** mechanisms which underpin the integration of these multisensory signals are the principal topic of the present *** multisensory integration theories focus on how failure of cognitive processes thought to be involved in multisensory integration leads to falls in older *** emphasis,however,has been placed on specific contributions of individual sensory modalities to multisensory integration processes and cross-modal interactions that occur between the sensory modalities in relation to gait and *** the present work,we review the contributions of somatosensory,visual,and vestibular modalities,along with their multisensory intersections to gait and balance in older adults and patients with Parkinson’s *** also review evidence of vestibular contributions to multisensory temporal binding windows,previously shown to be highly pertinent to fall risk in older ***,we relate multisensory vestibular mechanisms to potential neural substrates,both at the level of neurobiology(concerning positron emission tomography imaging)and at the level of electrophysiology(concerning electroencephalography).We hope that this integrative review,drawing influence across multiple subdisciplines of neuroscience,paves the way for novel research directions and therapeutic neuromodulatory approaches,to improve the lives of older adults and patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
