Protic ionic liquids/poly(vinylidene fluoride) composite membranes for fuel cell application

Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, membranes have attracted considerable attention as polymer electrolytes for fuel cells. This study explores the effect of solvent on the spherulite size and the crystallinity of the polymeric membranes. Based on Hansen solubility parameters theory, the mixture of DMC and DMSO was selected among a dozen of solvents for the preparation of PVDF membranes by thermally induced phase separation. The addition of two protic ionic liquids(PILs), bis(2-ethyl hexyl) ammonium hydrogen phosphate [EHNH_2][H_2PO_4], and imidazolium hexanoate [Im][Hex] to PVDF membranes at concentrations(10% < wP IL< 50%) has been investigated by SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, EIS, and DMA. The inclusion of ionic liquids into the polymer matrix influences structural parameters(degree of crystallinity and electroactive phases), thermal stability, proton conductivity and mechanical properties of the membranes. The membranes become transparent regardless type of ionic liquid employed. A small amount of ionic liquids increases the degree of crystallinity and facilitates the production of polar β and γ crystals. The proton conductivity mechanism(Grotthuss) is dependent on the ionic liquid structure(due to its selforganization in water) and the content in the PVDF membrane, as well as the membrane water *** behavior has been observed for the two ionic liquids, which stresses the challenge on selecting an appropriate cation and anion combination. The obtained composite membranes exhibited excellent mechanical performance and reduced elastic modulus, with respect to the pure polymer matrix. These results indicate that PVDF/IL composite membranes have a high potential for PEMFC applications.

Background::The burden of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)infection in people who use drugs(PWUD)is *** aimed to screen HIV infection among PWUD and describe their retention in HIV ***,we also screen for hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection among HIV-seropositive PWUD and describe their linkage to ***::We conducted a prospective study in 529 PWUD who visited the"Ca?ada Real Galiana"(Madrid,Spain).The study period was from June 1,2017,to May 31,*** diagnosis was performed with a rapid antibody screening test at the point-of-care(POC)and HCV diagnosis with immunoassay and PCR tests on dried blood spot(DBS)in a central *** PWUD were referred to the *** used the Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests,as appropriate,to compare rates between ***::Thirty-five(6.6%)participants were positive HIV antibodies,but 34 reported previous HIV diagnoses,and 27(76%)had prior antiretroviral *** patients with a positive HIV antibody test,we also found a higher prevalence of homeless(P<0.001)and injection drug use(PWID)(P<0.001),and more decades of drug use(P=0.002).All participants received HIV test results at the *** the 35 HIV positives,28(80%)were retained in HIV medical care at the end of the HIV screening study(2018),and only 22(62.9%)at the end of ***,12/35(34.3%)were positive for the HCV RNA *** the latter,10/12(83.3%)were contacted to deliver the HCV results test(delivery time of 19 days),5/12(41.7%)had an appointment and were attended at the hospital and started HCV therapy,and only 4/12(33.3%)cleared ***::We found almost no new HIV-infected PWUD,but their cascade of HIV care was low and remains a challenge in this population at *** high frequency of active hepatitis C in HIV-infected PWUD reflects the need for HCV screening and reinforcing the link to care.

Hypersensitivity to Aspirin as a Factor for Poor Control in Hereditary Angioedema

Background: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a primary immunodeficiency disorder characterized by C1 complement inhibitor deficiency and unregulated activation of complement. Aspirin hypersensitivity is related to an increase in the amount of leukotrienes with eosinophil and mast cell activation and increased levels of glandular kallikrein with upregulated local conversion of bradykinin. Both conditions can be present in the same patient. Objectives: We present five patients with HAE;they were all being treated in similar ways according to the therapeuthic options available in our institute (danazol). However, three of them had recurrent episodes of angioedema;in these cases, it was identified aspirin hypersensitivity as a cause of poor disease control. A review of the literature is included. Case Presentation: We present the cases of four females and one male (age range 21 - 58 years) with type I HAE. Subjects were all ISSSTE beneficiaries (state workers) treated at the National Medical Center “20 de Noviembre”. Aspirin hypersensitivity was identified in three patients. Elimination of NSAIDs along with dietary elimination of high salicylate-containing foods improved control of angioedema crisis (severe and/ or recurrent episodes). Discussion: Aspirin hypersensitivity was identified as a factor for poor control in our patients with HAE. Such cases improved with dietary elimination of high salicylate-containing foods and avoidance of NSAIDs. Conclusions: This is the first report of patients with HAE and aspirin hypersensitivity as a cause of poor control. We recommend a deliberate search of these comorbidities, especially in cases of poor disease control. Further studies are needed to continue the investigation on this topic.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of can- cer deaths among Hispanic women in the United States, and in Mexico, it recently became the primary cause of cancer deaths. This malign- nancy represents a poorly understood and un- derstudied disease in Hispanic women. The ELLA Binational Breast Cancer Study was es- tablished in 2006 as a multi-center study to as- sess patterns of breast tumor markers, clinical characteristics, and their risk factors in women of Mexican descent. We describe the design and implementation of the ELLA Study and provide a risk factor comparison between women in the U.S. and those in Mexico based on a sample of 765 patients (364 in the U.S. and 401 in Mexico). Compared to women in Mexico, U.S. women had significantly (p < 0.05) lower parity (3.2 vs. 3.9 mean live births) and breastfeeding rates (57.5% vs. 80.5%), higher use of oral contraceptives (60.7% vs. 50.1%) and hormone replacement therapy (23.3% vs. 7.6%), and higher family history of breast cancer (15.7% vs. 9.0%). Re- sults show that differences in breast cancer risk factor patterns exist between Mexico and U.S. women. We provide lessons learned from the conduct of our study. Binational studies are an important step in understanding disease pat- terns and etiology for women in both countries.
