In vitro adherence of conjunctival bacteria to different oculoplastic materials

AIM: To investigate the resistance to bacterial adhesion of materials used in oculoplastic surgery, particularly materials used in the manufacture of orbital ***: Seven organisms of conjunctival flora(two strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis and one strain each of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hominis, Corynebacterium amycolatum, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, and Serratia marcescens) were selected. A lactic acid bacterium(Lactobacillus rhamnosus) was also included as positive control because of its well-known adhesion ability. Eight materials used to make oculoplastic prostheses were selected(glass, steel, polytetrafluoroethylene, polymethylmethacrylate, silicone from orbital implants, commercial silicone, porous polyethylene, and semismooth polyethylene). Materials surfaces and biofilms developed by strains were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Kinetics of growth and adhesion of bacterial strains were determined by spectrophotometry. Each strain was incubated in contact with plates of the different materials. After growth, attached bacteria were re-suspended and colony-forming units(CFUs) were counted. The number of CFUs per square millimetre of material was statistically ***: A mature biofilm was observed in studied strains except Staphylococcus hominis, which simply produced a microcolony. Materials showed a smooth surface on the microbial scale, although steel exhibited 1.0-μm-diameter grooves. Most organisms showed significant differences in adhesion according to the material. There were also significant differences in thetotal number of CFUs per square millimetre from each material(p=0.044). CFU counts were significantly higher in porous polyethylene than in silicone from orbital implants(p=0.038).CONCLUSION: Silicone orbital implants can resist microbial colonization better than porous polyethylene implants.

Weber-Christian disease(WCD) is an inflammatory disease whose main histological feature is lobular panniculitis of adipose tissue. The location of panniculitis determines the clinical presentation,being the subcutaneous adipose tissue the most frequent one,followed by liver,spleen,bone marrow and mesenteric adipose *** corticosteroids are first line treatment,but other options should be considered if systemic symptoms are observed or in case of refractory clinical *** report herein a case with WCD showing orbital,mesenteric and ileocolonic involvement,which required surgical treatment and also developed postoperative *** were resolved by administration of thalidomide and,afterwards,*** our knowledge,this is the first report of Weber-Christian disease with luminal ileocolonic involvement,treated with infliximab.

predictors for advanced fibrosis in morbidly obese nonalcoholic fatty liver patients

AIMTo investigate predictors for fibrosis specifically in a high risk population of morbidly obese patients, including detailed evaluation of lifestyle. METHODSWe conducted a cross-sectional study among morbidly obese patients attending the bariatric clinic at the Tel-Aviv Medical Center between the years 2013-2014 with body mass index (BMI) above 40 or above 35 with co-morbidity. patients with serum hepatitis B surface antigen or anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies, genetic liver diseases, autoimmune disease or high alcohol intake (≥ 30 g/d in men or ≥ 20 g/d in women) were excluded from the study. Liver fibrosis was estimated by transient elastography (FibroScanp>®p>), using the ‘‘XL’’ probe. We collected data on age and gender, education, smoking status and amount, medical history, nutrition and lifestyle habits. All these data were collected using structured and validated questionnaires. Fasting blood test were available for a subsample. RESULTSFibroscan was performed on a total of 91 patients, of which 77 had a valid examination according to the accepted criteria. Of those, 21% had significant fibrosis (F2) and 39% had advanced or severe fibrosis (F3 or F4). In multivariate analysis, male gender and BMI had a positive association with advanced fibrosis; the OR for fibrosis F ≥ 2 was 7.93 (95%CI: 2.36-26.64, p = 0.001) for male gender and 1.33 (1.11-1.60 kg/mp>2p>, p = 0.002) for BMI. The OR for fibrosis F ≥ 3 was 2.92 (1.08-7.91, p = 0.035) for male gender and 1.17 (1.03-1.33, p = 0.018) for BMI. Subjects were categorized to subgroups based on the combination of male gender and BMI of 40 and above. A significant dose response association with stiffness level was noted across these categories, with the highest stiffness among men with a higher BMI (p = 0.001). In addition, a significant positive correlation between pack-years cigarette smoking and liver stiffness was demonstrated among men (r = 0.54, p = 0.012)

Assessing the estrogenic potency in a portuguese wastewater treatment plant using an integrated approach

The estrogenic potency of a wastewater treatment plant （WWTp） was evaluated using chemical and biological analyses, which showed that after the station treatment processes some of the selected endocrine disruptor compounds （EDCs） were still present in the treated effluent （e.g., bisphenol A, alkylphenols, estrone）. Thus, the most common endocrine EDCs were identified and quantified and the overall estrogenicity of the treated effluent assessed by integrating the results. Male goldfish （Carassius auratus） were used as biological indicators in a 28-day experiment. Vitellogenin （Vtg）, gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, steroids （17β-estradiol and 11-ketotestosterone） and histopathology were biomarkers used in fish to evaluate WWTp treated effluent estrogenicity, in combination with instrumental analyses. The results showed a significant increase （p 〈 0.01） in plasma and liver Vtg, which were significantly correlated （r = 0.66; p 〈 0.01）. The gonadosmatic index was significantly （p 〈 0.01） reduced in exposed fish. The steroid analyses revealed significant elevations in 17β-estradiol and depressed 11-ketotestosterone concentrations. The histological examinations show changes in exposed fish gonads, such as regressed testes and in some cases （43% to 75%） the development of ovo-testis in fish exposed to 50% and 100% treated effluent.
