Objective: To examine the association between elevated levels of red cell distribution width (RDW) and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and metabolic syndrome (mS) in HIV-patients. methods: Cross-sectional study including all asymptomatic HIV-outpatients under follow-up during 2007. Patients completed a questionnaire about CVRF, underwent a physical examination, and an 8-hour fasting blood analysis. Elevated RDW was defined as ≥75th percentile. Patients with and without an elevated RDW were compared. Results: 666 patients (79.3% men) were included: mean age 44.7 years, mean CD4 506/mm3 and 87.5% on antiretroviral therapy (85.3% with undetectable viral load). mean RDW was 13.7% (range: 7.7% - 33.6%;75th percentile, 14.1%). The prevalence per quartile of mS was 15.7%, 9.3%, 18.8% and 16.6% and of patients with CVRF > 20% was 8.4%, 4.0%, 4.4%, and 6.4%, respectively (p > 0.05);23.4% of the patients had an elevated RDW (>14.1%). The top percentile of RDW was associated with AIDS (OR 1.6;95% CI, 1.0 - 2.4;p = 0.02), detectable viral load (OR 1.5;95% CI, 1.01 - 2.4;p = 0.04) and hypertension (OR 2.3;95% CI, 1.4 - 4.0;p = 0.001). Conclusions: In HIV-outpatients, higher RDW is related with detectable viral load and with AIDS. Although it was associated with hypertension, we found no relation with mS nor with higher cardiovascular risk.

Confectionary sunflower, which has a larger size and lower oil content than oilseed sunflower, has a considerable market, since it is used for birdfeed and human consumption. The characteristics of use of confectionary sunflower seeds require a dehulling process that is efficient in the removal of the hull and that also allows obtaining a product consisting mainly of whole kernels. Response surface methodology was used to determine an optimal combination of working conditions in the dehulling process of confectionary sunflower seeds. Optimization factors were impact speed, expressed in terms of the peripheral speed (28.3 -41.9 m/s), and moisture content of the seeds (4% -14%, dry basis—db). A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to develop models for the responses (dehulling ability—DA and percentage of whole kernels—WK). Applying the desirability function method, the optimal values of the factors were determined using maximum WK and maximum DA as criteria. The results of the optimization technique suggest that by dehulling mycogen 9338 confectionary sunflower seeds at 12.3% db and 32.5 m/s, the maximum values of DA and WK (72.6% and 63%, respectively) would be obtained. The moisture value defined as optimal determines a requirement of humidification of the seeds prior to dehulling, establishing the need for a technical and economic feasibility study.

AIm:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. mETHODS:male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FSH(Pment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and Pm an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Objective: To analyze the body mass index (BmI) as an indicator of metabolic alterations, including the metabolic syndrome (metS), at both individual level and public health level. method: We recruited 3683 undergraduate students (17 - 24 years old) from méxico City identifying metabolic alterations, including the metS, and comparing its prevalence by BmI ranges. We applied a sensitivity analysis to define BmI optimal cut-off point values. Results: We found 14.6% of metS prevalence with a BmI average of 24.2%, and 34.5% of overweight prevalence (BmI ≥ 25). A BmI cut-off point value of 22.5 is suggested as an upper limit of a normal weight condition, only for public health purpose;while at individual level the BmI cut-off point of 25 was corroborated as the upper limit for a normal weight condition. A public health tool to estimate the metS prevalence based on BmI percentages is proposed, and a study case is presented. Conclusion: BmI fails predicting at individual level both, healthy condition or metabolic alterations, when values are lower than 25. At population level, the BmI is a valuable public health tool to estimate metS prevalence: based on the prevalence of metS by BmI ranges of a sample of the population.

　　Polynitrogen receptors such as bis-histidine peptides possess strong ability to bind metals, which play much important roles in medicinal, bioinorganic, bioorganic, biomimetic and supramolecular chemistry. In order to investigate the interaction of these hosts with a variety of neutral, cationic and anionic guests, several techniques, for example, NmR,potentiometric tirations and monocrystal X-ray diffraction have been employed. Among them NmR is a powerful technique for unraveling the structure of polynitrogen receptors as long as they are in solution where the rapid tumbling of molecules averages out the anisotropies such as chemical shift and dipole-dipole interactions. General 1H NmR approach has been widely used for the study of host-guest interaction, but it is difficult for the accurate measurement in complexes structures, particularly metal complexes structures in which how the polynitrogen receptors bind metal, and which nitrogen binds metal and so on.……

AIm： To evaluate the surface expression of triggering receptor on myeloid cell 1 （TREm-1）, class Ⅱ major histocompatibility complex molecules （HLA-DR）, and the expression of the splicing variant （svTREH-1） of TREm-1 in septic patients and those subjected to major abdominal surgery. mETHODS： Using flow cytometry, we examined the surface expression of TREm-1 and HLA-DR in peripheral blood monocytes from 11 septic patients, 7 elective gastrointestinal surgical patients, and 10 healthy volunteers, svTREm-1 levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. RESULTS： Basal expression of TREm-1 and HLA- DR in healthy volunteers was 35.91±14.75 mFI and 75.8±18.3%, respectively. In septic patients, TREm-1 expression was 59.9±23.9 mFI and HLA-DR expression was 44.39±20.25%, with a significant difference between healthy and septic groups （P〈0.05） for both molecules. In the surgical patients, TREm-1 and HLA-DR expressions were 56.8±20.85 HFI and 71±13.8% before surgery and 72.65±29.92 mFI and 72.82±22.55% after surgery. TREm-1 expression was significantly different （P = 0.0087） between the samples before and after surgery and svTREm-1 expression was 0.8590± 0.1451 mF1, 0.8820±0.1460 mF1, and 2.210±0.7873 mF1 in the healthy, surgical （after surgery） and septic groups, respectively. There was a significant difference （P = 0.048） in svTREm-1 expression between the healthy and surgical groups and the septic group. CONCLUSION： TREm-1 expression is increased during systemic inflammatory conditions such as sepsis and the postoperative phase. Simultaneous low expression of HLA-DR molecules correlates with the severity of illness and increases susceptibility to infection. Additionally, TREm-1 expression is distinctly different in surgical patients at different stages of the inflammatory response before and after surgery. Thus, surface TREm-1 appears to be an endogenous signal during the course of the inflammatory response, svTREm-1 expression is significantly increased during sepsis, appearing to be a
