The purpose of this study is to develop a method for delivering antiinflammatory agents of high molecular weight(e.g.,Avastin)into the posterior segment that does not require injections into the eye(i.e.,intravitreal injections;IVT).Diseases affecting the posterior segment of the eye are currently treated with monthly to bimonthly intravitreal injections,which can predispose patients to severe albeit rare complications like endophthalmitis,retinal detachment,traumatic cataract,and/or increased *** this study,we show that one time moderate intensity focused ultrasound(MIFU)treatment can facilitate the penetration of large molecules across the scleral barrier,showing promising evidence that this is a viable method to deliver high molecular weight medications not *** validate the efficacy of the drug delivery system,IVT injections of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)were used to create an animal model of *** creation of this model allowed us to test anti-VEGF medications and evaluate the efficacy of the *** vivo testing showed that animals treated with our MIFU device improved on the retinal tortuosity and clinical dilation compared to the control group while evaluating fluorescein angiogram(FA)Images.

Effect of Induced Mutation on Antioxidant Activity in Ocimum basilicum Linn

Five batches from the same stock of seeds of Ocimum basilicum were irradiated at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy, respectively using 60C source. Methanolic leaf extracts of these samples and a control were evaluated for their antioxidant activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method using M2 plants. All the methanolic extracts showed antioxidant activity. The IC50 of the methanolic extracts of the six different treatments, control, 5 Gy, 10 Gy, 15 Gy, 20 Gy and 25 Gy, showed antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 100, 90, 86, 61, 71 and 70 μg/ml, respectively. Three individual mutants, M-15-5, M-20-6 and M-15-4, had IC50 values of 26, 30 and 40 μg/ml, respectively. These mutants were from the 15 Gy and 20 Gy treatments. From the results, it is confirmed that induced mutation can be employed to create variation in the levels of free radical scavenging activity in O. basilicum and can therefore serve as a tool for breeding for high levels of antioxidant activity in O. basilicum.

Local Ghanaian beverages such as Sobolo and Lamugin, play a significant cultural, economic, and medicinal role in the daily lives of the population. These traditional drinks are produced using locally sourced ingredients, making them both affordable and accessible. The COVID-19 pandemic further heightened the economic importance of these beverages, as demand surged due to their perceived immune-boosting properties. However, the production of these beverages often occurs in non-sterile environments with minimal regulatory oversight, leading to concerns about microbial contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the microbial quality of Sobolo and Lamugin sold at selected street markets in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Samples were collected from various vendors and analyzed for bacterial and fungal pathogens using standard microbiological techniques. The results revealed significant microbial contamination in many samples, with bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae detected at levels exceeding safe limits. These findings raise serious public health concerns, as the consumption of contaminated beverages could lead to gastrointestinal infections and other health issues. This highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and improved hygiene practices in the production of local beverages to ensure their safety for consumers. Implementing better regulatory frameworks, regular inspections, and public awareness campaigns could help mitigate the risks associated with these popular drinks, ensuring they remain a safe and cherished part of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
