For over twenty years, Obuasi Municipality, Ghana, has experienced land-cover change arising from gold mining and urbanisation. This project quantified the land-cover changes that have taken place and projected likely future land-cover. An integration of EO （earth observation）, GIS （geographical information science） and Stochastic Modelling was examined. Post-classification Change Detection employed Landsat TM or ETM＋ images in 1986, 2002 and 2008. Subsequently, Markov Chain Analysis projected the land-cover distribution for 2020. Seven broad land-use and land-cover classes were identified and mapped, namely： built-up areas, mine sites tailing ponds barren land forestland farmland and rangeland. The results obtained for the 2008 to 2020 projection revealed a continuous expansion of built-up areas （1.63%）, mine sites （0.89%） and farmland （3.4%）, and a reduction of forestland （4.17%） and rangeland （2.59%）. Despite the advent of very high resolution satellite imagery, this use of EO and GIS technology focussed on low-cost and lower resolution satellite imagery, coupled with Markov Modelling and was found to be beneficial in describing and analysing land-cover change processes in the study area, and was hence potentially useful for strategic planning purposes.

Garden Egg (Solanum melongena L.) Performance under Different Sources of Animal Manure as a Sustainable Alternative Fertilizer for Farmers

To ensure food security, continuous intensive farming systems with limited fallowing periods and other farming systems like crop rotation have led to poor soil health with extremely low organic matter, especially in tropical regions with high organic matter mineralization. Small-scale farmers in developing countries cannot afford intensive agricultural systems with heavy chemical inputs, which have not improved soil health. Inorganic fertilizers are harmful to the environment, so farmers should use cheap, locally available organic fertilizers like animal manure, which supports organic agricultural systems and soil health. Animal manure is used as a soil amendment to improve soil health, fertility, and crop yields, but data on how different manures affect specific crops is scarce. Poultry, cattle, and goat manure were compared to no fertilizer and mineral fertilizer on garden egg phenology, vegetative growth, and yield. Poultry manure improved garden egg vegetative growth, phenology, yield, and yield components compared to the negative control and the other treatments. Poultry manure yielded the most fruit at 0.921 kg∙ha-1, followed by cattle and goat manure at 0.709 kg∙ha-1 and 0.698 kg∙ha-1. In conclusion, poultry manure may be a better alternative to synthetic NPK with yield performance similar to garden eggs and long-term soil health benefits similar to other manure sources.

Ghana like all countries in Sub-Saharan region of Africa have long been undergoing intense land use land cover changes (LULCC) which have given rise to extensive forest loss (deforestation and degradation), loss of arable land and land degradation. This study assessed the past LULCC in the Atwima Nwabiagya which contains the Barekese and Owabi Headworks) and the old Kumasi Local Assemblies’ areas in Ghana and projected the scenario in 2040 for business-as-usual (BAU). The synergies of satellite imagery of 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 were classified with an overall accuracy of 90%. Markov Cellular-Automata method was used to forecast the future LULC pattern after detecting main driving forces of LULCC. The findings showed an extensive increase in built up areas from 11% in 1990 to 39% in 2020 owing largely to 23% decrease in forest cover and 6% decrease in agricultural lands within the past 30 years (1990-2020). The projected LULC under the BAU scenario for 2040 showed built-up surge from 39% to 45% indicating additional forest loss from 43% in 2020 to 40% and decreasing agricultural land from 17% to 14%. The main driver for the LULCC is clearly anthropogenic driven as the human population in the study area keeps rising every censual year. This study exemplifies the fast-tracked forest loss, loss of arable land and challenges on ecosystem sustainability of the Barekese-Owabi-Kumasi landscape. The current and projected maps necessitate the apt implementation of suitable interventions such as reforestation, protection measures and policy decision in deliberate land use planning to mitigate further loss of forest cover and safeguard the Barekese and Owabi headworks.

Urbanization posits the expression of urban expanse expansion due to population growth, rise in built-up areas, high population density and its correspondingly urban way of life. Unrestrained impetus of development and land use land cover change (LULCC) portent several issues such as unlawful urban sprawl, loss of agricultural land, forest loss and other associated complications. This study analyzed the dynamics of urbanization and other LULCC in Ghana’s Greater Kumasi area via Landsat images (TM 1986, OLI 2013 and OLI 2023) using ERDAS Imagine, Idrisi and ArcGIS software. Implementing supervised classification technique, the Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) procedure was employed to categories the study area into five LULC classes. Accuracy assessment undertaken on the resultant LULC maps was deemed very satisfactory. The results from 1986-2023 pointed to an upsurge in a built-up extent as of 8% to 41%, a decrease in Closed Forest from 9% to 4%, another decrease in Open Forests from 64% to 33%, a slight increase from 16% to 20% in farmlands and a stable level of water share. Further analysis indicated that the study area had undergone LULCC within the periods 1986-2013 and 2013-2023 at 60% and 37% respectively. The findings showed uncontrolled urban sprawling along major roads and forest loss as deforestation outside protected areas and degradation in protected forest. The monitoring of urbanization and other LULCC is important for local, and national governments and other bodies charged with the implementation of programs and policies that manage and utilize natural resources. Development adapts to mitigate the effect on the environment.

The momentum flow exchange between the impeller and side channel produces highly turbulent flows in side channel *** turbulent flows feature complex patterns of vortex structures that are partly responsible for the dissipation of energy losses and unsteady pressure *** concept of turbulent flows in side channel pumps requires a reliable vortex identification criterion to capture and predict the effects of the vortex structures on the *** this reason,the current study presents the application of the new Ω-criterion to a side channel pump model in comparison with other traditional methods such as Qand λ2 *** 3D flow fields of the pump were obtained through unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)*** studies showed that the Ω-criterion identifies the vortex of different intensities with a standard threshold,Ω=*** Q and λ2 criteria required different thresholds to capture vortex of different intensities thus leads to subjective *** theΩ-criterion intensity on different planes with the entropy losses and pressure pulsation,the longitudinal vortex plays an important role in the momentum exchange development which increases the head performance of the ***,the rate of exchange is impeded by the axial and radial vortices restricted in the ***,the impeller generates the highest entropy loss and pressure pulsation intensities which lower the output ***,the findings provide a fundamental background to the morphology of the vortex structures in the turbulent flows which can be dependent upon for efficiency improvement of side channel pumps.

Effect of Variety and Plant Spacing on Growth and Yield of Groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea L.)

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effect of variety and plant spacing on yield and growth of groundnuts. The field experiment was laid in a 3 × 3 factorial experiment in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The factor A included three (3) groundnut varieties (Nkatie Sari, Sum Nutt 22 and Yenyawoso) and Factor B was the three (3) spacing of 30 cm × 15 cm, 30 cm × 30 cm and 30 cm × 40 cm. All recommended agronomic practices were followed. Data was collected from eight (8) tagged plants. Growth data were recorded on plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, and the number of flowers while yield data were collected on the number of flowers, number of pods per plant, 100 seeds weight and the pod yield (kg/ha). The plant spacing significantly influenced (P < 0.05) the growth and yield parameters. Groundnut grown at a spacing of 30 cm × 15 cm produced the maximum plant height, whereas the maximum number of leaves, number of branches and number of flowers were produced from 30 cm × 40 cm. Yenyawoso variety with a wider plant spacing performed better vegetatively among all the varieties. The Yenyawoso variety produced the highest number of pods, 100 seeds weight and pod yield as compared to the other varieties. Also, Yenyawoso at 30 cm × 40 cm spacing and Nkatie Sari at 30 cm × 15 cm spacing produced the maximum pod yield.

This study was done to quality assure the Hawkeye SPECT/CT at the St. Olav’s hospital and create a clinical method for doing individual dosimetry with 177Lu-octreotate in targeted radionuclide therapy for neuroendocrine tumors. Various quality control parameters were performed on Infinia Hawkeye SPECT/CT. A calibration dose of 160% ± 2% MBq was ordered and first calibrated for all the dose calibrators. The uniformity test was obtained using a 40 MBq Tc-99m point source positioned 2.5 m away from the two detectors. A 200 MBq Tc-99m was diluted in 70 ml of water, dispersed in six syringes for the registration test. A Lu-177 point source was placed in front of the detectors, one at a time, to check the energy peaks. The Jaczczak phantom with a hollow sphere set (volumes: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16) ml with an additional 60 ml sphere was used for the 3D sensitivity and recovery with Lu-177. Total activity of 945.3 MBq was added to 160 ml of water yielding an activity concentration of 5.908 MBq/ml in the spheres. The phantom was then scanned at various time intervals. A cylindrical phantom with a volume of 6283 ml was also used to obtain the cross-calibration measurement (cps/MBq). Total activity of 995.6 MBq was added and the phantom was scanned at days 0, 6, 13 and 23. The dose calibration factor was changed from 762 to 760 to achieve correct doses. The 2D mean sensitivity factor was 5.56 cps/MBq. Uniformities for both detectors were approved after iteration calibration of the PM tubes. The X-ray to SPECT registration was found to be accurate and within specifications. The energy peak test revealed off-centered 208 keV energy peaks for the two detectors. Quality assurance of imaging devices using radiation is essential for radiation protection and ensures a high-quality image.

Incessant monitoring of water is essential in terms of heavy metals and toxic substances as it provides detailed information on aquatic ***jority of lagoons receive freshwater from their catchment areas containing industrial and domestic *** paper analysed seasonal variations in the distribution and concentrations of Lead(Pb),Copper(Cu),Cadmium(Cd),and Manganese(Mn)in the Fosu lagoon in Ghana to ascertain the quality of the *** was sampled from eighteen(18)different points on the lagoon and was analysed at the Water Research Institute(WRI)of the Center for Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR)using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry(AAS)and the results were interpolated using *** results obtained were compared with the World Health Organisation water quality *** analysis of heavy metal concentrations using Pearson’s two-tailed significance correlation showed positive correlations for both seasons;between Pb and Cu(0.297;sig.=0.232,and 0.196;sig.=0.436),and Cd and Mn(0.119;sig.=0.643 and 0.191;sig.=0.447)for the wet and dry seasons respectively.A paired sample t-test on concentrations also showed statistical differences between wet and dry seasons’concentrations for Pb(t=1.324;sig.=0.203),Cu(t=2.759;sig.=0.013),and Cd(t=3.056;sig.=0.007),and Mn(t=-4.014;sig.=0.001).Pb and Cd showed higher concentrations above the World Health Organisation's permissible *** metal concentrations of water samples analysed varied widely in terms of seasons and sampling points.

Image Quality Assessment Using NEMA Standards for Lu-177 Radionuclide

A lutetium 177 (177Lu) radiopharmaceutical has been used as a theragnostic agent in molecular radiotherapies. This study aimed to produce images simulating those obtained in a total body imaging study with hot lesions to assess and investigate the image quality of the Hawkeye SPECT/CT images from Lu-177. The NEMA image quality phantom (PTW) with spheres (inner diameters of 10, 13, 17, 22, 28 and 37 mm) and lung insert was used. The measured volume in the background of the current phantom setting was 9482 mL. The five smaller spheres were filled with an activity concentration of 0.461 MBq/mL and the biggest sphere was filled with water. The phantom was placed on the couch and scanned at four hot sphere-to-background concentrations, which are no background, 16:1, 8:1 and 4:1. The images obtained from the scans were imported onto the OXIRIS image analysis tool. Regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn on each sphere of the reconstructed SPECT image. Image contrast and background variability ratios for hot spheres were used as measures of image quality. In addition, the accuracy of corrections were determined from the uniform background and cold lung insert regions. The 37 mm cold sphere had the highest percent contrast, whiles the 10 mm hot sphere had the least for the various hot sphere to background ratios. The background variability for each hot sphere was also determined. The average lung residual error was calculated to be 23.13% for the 16:1 and 22.57% for both the 8:1 and 4:1 hot sphere to background ratio. The results show that the scanner has very good overall performance.
