Appropriate interaction between pantograph and catenary is imperative for smooth operation of electric *** heights of overhead lines to accommodate level crossings,overbridges,and tunnels pose significant challenges in maintaining consistent current collection performance as the pantograph aerodynamic profile,and thus aerodynamic load changes significantly with operational *** research aims to analyse the global flow characteristics and aerodynamic forces acting on individual components of an HSX pantograph operating in different configurations and orientations,such that the results can be combined with multibody simulations to obtain accurate dynamic insight into contact ***,computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to investigate the pantograph component loads in a representative setting,such as that of the recessed cavity on a Class 800 *** an aerodynamic perspective,this study indicates that the total drag force acting on non-fixed components of the pantograph is larger for the knuckle-leading orientation rather than the knuckle-trailing,although the difference between the two is found to reduce with increasing pantograph *** the aerodynamic loads acting on individual components with multibody tools allows for realistic dynamic insight into the pantograph *** results obtained show how considering aerodynamic forces enhance the realism of the models,leading to behaviour of the pantograph-catenary contact forces closely matching that seen in experimental tests.

The study of corrosion of magnesium and its alloys has emerged a hot topic in the applications of lightweight structural materials. The inherently high electrochemical activity of bare magnesium surfaces still lacks a convincing mechanism to describe the observed experimental characteristics, and it has prompted the development of various types of protective coatings with the aim of slowing metal dissolution. In recent years, new instruments and techniques have been developed to study with spatial resolution the local corrosion processes that occur in metallic materials in general, and for magnesium and its alloys in particular, both for bare surfaces and coated. Scanning microelectrochemical techniques, such as local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(LEIS), scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECm), scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET), scanning ion-selective electrode technique(SIET) and scanning Kelvin probe(SKP) can provide information about the local electrochemical activity of metallic surfaces. In the present work, the applications of these techniques in corrosion studies of magnesium and its alloys are reviewed. Assessment of corrosion mechanisms, barrier properties of conventional coatings and active corrosion behavior of self-healing coatings are examined. Limitations and future developments in this area are discussed.

Olfactory receptors(ORs)play a key role in the prime sensorial perception,being highly relevant for intra/interspecific *** are a subgroup of G-protein coupled receptors that exhibit highly complex subgenomes in ***,OR repertoires remain poorly studied in fish lineages,precluding finely retracing their origin,evolution,and diversification,especially in the most basal ***,we conduct an exhaustive gene screening upon 43 high-quality fish genomes exhibiting varied gene repertoires(2e583 genes).While the early vertebrates performed gas exchange through gills,we hypothesize that the emergence of new breathing structures(swim bladder and paired lungs)in early osteichthyans may be associated with expansions in the ORs gene families sensitive to airborne ***,we verify that the OR repertoire of moderns actinopterygians has not increased as expected following a whole genome duplication,likely due to regulatory mechanisms compensating the gene load ***,we identify 25 distinct OR families,allowing us to propose an updated universal nomenclature for the fish ORs.

microstructural evaluation of initial dissolution of aluminosilicate particles and formation of geopolymer material

The rheological behavior of microparticulate structures of geopolymers was *** materials were developed from alternative sources of aluminosilicate and were activated in different concentrations using 5,10,and 15m sodium hydroxide,and sodium silicate,which were added in a 2:1ratio (by volume).The solid constituents used were bottom ash/metakaolin and neat metakaolin in a 2:1blend. The theological characteristics were determined after 5min of homogenization and a subsequent curing of the pastes at room temperature for 28 *** materials presented amorphous characteristics, which confirmed the formation of geopolymers.A thixotropic behavior was observed for all forrfiulations,except for bottom ash/metakaolin activated at 5m,which resulted in geopolymers with a lower intensity compared with those activated at 10 and 15m,High activator concentrations exhibited a proportional relationship for geopolymer ring growth,which resulted in a reduced structure mobility and, consequently,an increased viscosity and yield *** effects are more evident in the metakaolin samples,and are associated with the water content that is required for *** that were activated with 10m sodium hydroxide presented a favorable workability and particle packing,in terms of the theological and structural aspects.

Aims mediterranean coastal dunes are habitats of great conservation interest,with a distinctive and rich *** the last century,Acacia spp.,native from Australia,have been introduced in Portugal,with the objective of stabilizing sand dunes,and since have become dominant in numerous sand dune *** invasion process led to the reduction of native plant species richness,changed soil characteristics and modified habitat’s microclimatic *** aim of this research was to typify and compare,in mediterranean sand dune ecosystems,the ecophysiological responses to drought of Helichrysum italicum and Corema album,two native species,and Acacia longifolia,an exotic invasive *** addressed the following specific objectives:(i)to com-pare water relations and water use efficiencies,(ii)to evaluate water stress,(iii)to assess water use strategies and water sources used by plants and(iv)to evaluate the morphological adaptations at leaf and phyllode *** In order to obtain an integrative view of ecophysiological patterns,water relations and performance measuring methods have been applied:predawn(ψPD)and midday(ψmD)water potential,chloro-phyll a fluorescence,oxygen isotopic composition of xylem,rain and groundwater(δ18O)and leaf carbon isotopic discrimination(Δ13C).The leaf characteristics of the three species,as well as the histochemistry of non-glandular trichome cell walls,were also studied to identify morpho-traits related to drought *** findings The results support our initial hypothesis:although *** clearly possesses a degree of resistance to water stress,such ability is provided by a different water strategy,when compared to native *** relied on morphological adaptations to restrict water loss,whereas the invasive species adjusted the water uptake as a way to balance their limited ability of restricting water *** corroborate that woody native species(i)have a conservative water-saving strategy an

The ecological performance of metallophyte plants thriving in geochemical islands is explained by the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis

Aims The Inclusive Niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf C and N concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

Biliary tract schwannoma:A rare cause of obstructive jaundice in a young patient

Schwannoma is a tumor derived from Schwann cells which usually arises in the upper extremities, trunk, head and neck, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, pelvis, and peritoneum. However, it can arise in the gastro-intestinal tract, including biliary tract. We present a 24-year-old male patient with obstructive jaundice, whose investigation with computed tomography abdomen showed focal wall thickening in the common hepatic duct, difficult to differentiate with hilar adenocarcinoma. He was diagnosed intraoperatively schwannoma of common bile duct and treated with local resection. The patient recovered well without signs of recurrence of the lesion after 12 mo. We also reviewed the common bile duct schwannoma related in the literature and evaluated the difficulty in pre and intraoperative differential diagnosis with adenocarcinoma hilar. Resection is the treatment of choice for such cases and the tumordid not recur in any of the resected cases.
