Spatiotemporal Variation of Land Use Pattern and Land Cover Changes in Gidan Kwano Watershed Area in North Central Nigeria

Land Management Systems (LMS) are institutional frameworks complex by the tasks they must achieve, national, cultural, political, and judicial settings and technology. The urbanisation process in Nigeria has increased since the 1960s because of the crude oil boom era and other government-backed industrial initiatives and investments. This study employed the use of both primary and secondary sources of data. Preliminary data comprise methods of land use, types of agricultural activities carried out and the process of working on the land by the farmers within a 10 km radius. The secondary data involved the interactive digital and visual techniques of the Geographical Information system for five seasons, with each having a ten-year interval span within 1975 to 2015. Statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS 2013 and XLSTAT 2015. Five land use and land cover types were observed within the Gidan Kwano watershed, which includes wetlands (WL), water bodies (WB), bare grounds (BG), vegetation (VG), and settlements (SL). The most prevalent landform in the study area during the 1975 period was the vegetative area which was 50% of the total landmass. Thus, the vegetation (VG) covered half of the Gidan Kwano watershed. However, the vegetative area decreased substantially during the study period of 1975 to 2015. It was observed that the vegetation (VG) within the study area had the highest percentage of coverage, of 34%. During the study period, a significant decrease was observed in the WL, WB and VG areas. It was also concluded that due to the built-up places, the infiltration of surface runoff from rainwater would be drastically reduced as most of the sections are paved for construction activities while a section of the study area is covered with rock outcrops and farmlands.

Incorporation of silica into the goethite structure: a microscopic and spectroscopic study

Quartz and iron(hydr)oxide are reactive surface phases that are often associated with one another in soils and sediments. Despite the several studies on the coating of quartz with iron oxides, the reactivity of dissolved species(Si) leached from quartz with iron(hydr)oxides has received limited attention. In this study, goethite synthesized on quartz substrates were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and Fouriertransform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy. The SEM characterization revealed that bundles of thin parallel aligned goethite rods were formed at p H [ 10, while large pseudohexagonal crystals of twinned goethite needles were synthesized at p H B 10 after dehydration and hydration in the alkaline media. TEM analysis showed expanded and distorted lattice spacing of the crystal structure of iron(hydr)oxide due to silica incorporation. The characterization showed that silica increased the crystallite size of the goethite and transformed its acicular texture to a larger,twinned needle structure. FT-IR and XRD analyses revealed band shifts in crystal bonds as well as new bond formations, which indicate the presence of changes in the chemical environment of Fe–O and Si–O bonds. Thus, the presence of sorbed silicates modifies the crystal and lattice structure of goethite.

Faulty Phase Identification for Transmission Line with Metal Oxide Varistor-protected Series Compensator

The nonlinear operation of metal oxide varistor(MOV)-protected series compensator in transmission lines introduces complications into fault detection approaches. The accuracy of a conventional fault detection schemes is adversely affected by continuous change of the system impedance and load current at the point of a series compensation unit. Thus, this study suggests a method for detecting the faulted phase in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines. Primarily, the fault feature is identified using the covariance coefficients of the current samples during the fault period and the current samples during the pre-fault period. Furthermore, a convenience fault detection index is established by applying the cumulative sum technique. Extensive validation through different fault circumstances is accomplished, including different fault positions,resistances, and inception times. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well with high resistance or impedance faults, faults in noisy conditions, and close-in and far-end faults. The proposed method is simple and efficient for faulty phase detection in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines.

Case-based surveillance measles data was defined according to World Health Organization （WHO） guidelines. A total of 511 measles cases were studied from 2011 to 2015 in Southern Darfur State, Sudan and 58.1% of cases were confirmed from Nyala city. About 43.4% of cases were males, 56.6% of cases were female, and 47.7% were children under five years old. Similarity, within February to June, the cases increased by 8.0% in children vaccinated through measles campaign, and 5.3% in children that used child vaccination card and 78.7% in unvaccinated one.

Microsatellite-Based Genetic Differentiation and Phylogeny of Sheep Breeds in Mongolia Sheep Group of China

In the present study we studied the genetic structure of five Chinese sheep populations of Hu sheep, Tong sheep, Small-tailed Han sheep, Tan sheep, and Wadi （WD） sheep using 15 microsatellite loci. The results showed that the FIT, FST, and FIS statistics computed for the complete dataset had the following values, 0.523±0.140, 0.363±0.131 and 0.263±0.092, respectively. All loci were significantly contributed to the genetic differentiation among population （P0.001）. There is no relationship between the scatter of pairwise FST geographical distance points as geographical distance increases between the five populations. Membership probabilities and genetic structure of sheep populations were estimated when K=2, the populations were classified into Hu, Tong, Han and WD, and Tan sheep group. However, when K=3, the populations were classified into Hu and Tong, Han and WD, and Tan sheep group. The findings supported the previous literatures that these populations are originated on different time stages from the primogenitor population and communicated genetically with each other by natural and artificial selection in different ecological environment.

Reports of avian malaria parasites in village chicken in Nigeria generally remain fragmentary and *** study was conducted in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State,Nigeria to investigate avian malaria parasites in Village Chickens(Gallus gallus domesticus)and to determine the risk factors associated with the prevalence of the haemoparasites.A total of 530 village chickens blood samples were obtained from apparently healthy village chickens'brachial veins using sterile 2mls syringes and 23 gauge *** blood smear was made from each blood sample,and Giemsa stained and examined for the presence of avian haemoparasites under an *** result indicates 23.8%overall prevalence rate of three species of avian malaria parasites consisting of Plasmodium,Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon *** *** the highest prevalent rate of 13.0%followed by Haemoproteus spp.(5.1%),mixed Plasmodium spp.+Haemoproteus spp.(4.9%)infection and Leucocytozoon spp.(0.8%).Prevalence of avian malaria parasites was significantly higher in cocks compared to hens(p<0.05),as well as higher in adults compared to growers chickens(p<0.05).This study also showed a higher prevalence of avian malaria parasites during the rainy season compared to the dry season of the study *** was concluded that haemoparasites of Plasmodium,Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon species that occur in both single and mixed infections are prevalent among village chickens that are apparently healthy in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State,Nigeria.

Ocular manifestations of children with atopic dermatitis in Saudi Arabia

AIM:To examine the incidence of ocular abnormalities in children with atopic dermatitis(AD)in Saudi Arabia and its association with the severity of ***:This is a cross-sectional study on 50 children with AD who were between 5 and 16 years of *** severity of AD was evaluated using the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD)*** the children underwent slit lamp exams,visual acuity assessment,intraocular pressure measurement,and corneal *** children were considered to have an ophthalmic abnormality if one or more of the following signs were present:glaucoma,keratoconus suspicion,in addition to lid,conjunctival,corneal,lenticular,or retinal ***:Based on the SCORAD severity index,14%of children had mild AD(7/50),38%had moderate AD(19/50),and nearly half had severe *** than half the children exhibited facial involvement,and half had peri-orbital *** mean SCORAD index was *** mean age was 10.48±3.6y,and the cohort showed a slight male predominance(54%males).Both eyes of the 50 children in the cohort were *** on the ocular examinations,92%of the patients showed ocular abnormalities:lid abnormalities(27/50)followed by keratitis(22/50).Four patients had moderate risk for keratoconus in one eye and eight patients were suspected to have ***,SCORAD severity index was not associated with age,sex,or the number or presence of ophthalmic ***:This is the first study in Saudi Arabia to evaluate the prevalence of ocular manifestations in children with *** results indicate that the majority of children with AD have ocular abnormalities that mainly include lid *** on these findings,larger scale studies are needed to affirm whether regular screening for ophthalmic abnormalities would be beneficial for children with AD in terms of early intervention and prevention of sight-threatening complications.

Optimizing the Global Digital Elevation Models(GDEMs) and accuracy of derived DEMs from GPS points for Iraq’s mountainous areas

Optimizing the combined horizontal and vertical accuracy of the well-known Global Digital Elevation Models(GDEMs) of various resolutions for each country and region especially in Iraq’s mountainous areas is still questionable. All the three GDEMs, approximately, have the same vertical accuracy with the Root Mean Square(RMSE) of ±7.3 m, ±7.6 m and ±6.5 m via 12 fixed Ground Control Points(GCPs) for the Advanced Land Observation Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(ALOS PALSAR 12.5 m), the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission(SRTM 30 m) and the TerraSAR-X(the name of twin satellites) add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement(TanDEM-X 90 m) GDEMs respectively. Moreover, the percentage of outliers that are greater or smaller than ±10 m detection of the height extraction from both the ALOS PALSAR and SRTM Digital Elevation Models(DEMs) contains 16.7% and for TanDEM-X was 25%. In this paper,the special DEM is derived using 2123 handheld GPS points for Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Kurdistan region, Iraq. The height extraction by discarding the outliers of 58% gives the RMSE of ±8.0 m in the case of adding geoid heights(N) to the ellipsoidal heights(h) via the Earth Gravitational Model 2008(EGM2008)and ±5.6 m without adding N. It is expected that the derived DEMs will give more accurate results both horizontally and vertically in the mountainous areas when GPS observations are intensified. The horizontal accuracy is validated through extracting hierarchy stream types of the watershed map from the DEMs for higher than 100 pixels length. The ALOS PALSAR DEM extracted more numbers of stream orders than ***, based on the criteria of RMSE, outlier detection, and the number of extracted stream orders, the ALOS PALSER DEM is regarded as the optimal GDEM in comparison with the close accuracy of both the TanDEM-X and SRTM DEM.

Different modification methods and software programs were developed to obtain accurate local geoid models in the past two *** quantitative effect of the main factors on the accuracy of local geoid modeling is still ambiguous and has not been clearly diagnosed *** study presents efforts to find the most influential factors on the accuracy of the local geoid model,as well as the amount of each factor’s effect *** methodology covers extracting the quantitative characteristics of 16 articles regarding local geoid models of different *** Statistical Package of Social Sciences(SPSS)software formulated a strong multiple regression model of correlation coefficient r = 0.999 with a high significance coefficient of determination R^2 = 0.997 and adjusted R^2 = 0,98 for the required effective ***,factor analysis is utilized to extract the dominant factors which include:accuracy of gravity data(40%),the density of gravity data(25%)(total gravity factors is 65%),the Digital Elevation Model(DEM)resolution(16%),the accuracy of GPS/leveling points(10%)and the area of the terrain of the country/state under the study(9%).These results of this study will assist in developing more accurate local geoid models.
