Plant diseases severely reduce crop yields and threaten global food ***-spectrum resistance(BSR)is a desirable trait because it confers resistance against more than one pathogen species or the majority of races/strains of the same *** control plant diseases,breeders have selected BSR to reduce disease occurrence and prolong the life-span of newly released cultivars in the last several decades(Mundt,Phytopathology 108(7):792–802,2018).Although effective,breeding of BSR cultivars in crop plants is still time-consuming and technically ***,new gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 have dramatically accelerated the process of plant breeding and provided an approach for rapidly creating new varieties with BSR and other beneficial traits(Borrelli et al.,Front Plant Sci 9:1245,2018).In addition,close surveillance of pathogen populations in the field can provide useful information for the deployment of appropriate resistance genes in the target *** this mini-review,we focus on the significance and application of the exciting results from two recent companion papers published in nature Biotechnology that provide new strategies to develop crop plants with BSR against pathogens through targeted promoter editing of susceptibility genes in plants as well as pathogen population monitoring.

Rodents are reservoirs of various types of hantavirus,some of which are agents of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in *** hantavirus is associated with a single rodent host species but successive spill-over events may eventually lead to host-switching and new species’becoming host of a given *** study aims to gain an understanding of the spatial ecology of two hantavirus-host species,Akodon azarae,and Oligoryzomys flavescens,by identifying factors modulating their home range sizes and stability,and by evaluating intra-and interspecific spatial aggregation for these species and a third one—Oxymycterus rufus—living in *** this,eleven capture-mark-recapture surveys were carried out,spanning 22 *** found that *** males have larger and more mobile home ranges than females,independently of the ***,males could likely have a more relevant role in the transmission of hantavirus because of their greater exposure both to a higher number of contacts between individuals and viral contamination of the ***,*** individuals showed negligible displacements of their home range through time,which could limit the range of hantavirus spread in host *** *** is host to Lechiguanas hantavirus(pathogenic to humans)this result encompasses epidemiological relevance,for it may imply the existence of local foci of ***,individuals of both species performed excursions outside their home *** events could enable hantavirus spread over distances beyond the normal range of movements and lead to new hantavirus outbreaks in formerly non-infected rodent populations,favoring the persistence of the virus in nature.

Cationic hydrogel with magnetic property was synthesized via radical polymerization and its removal capacity of chromate from contaminated water was found to be 200 mg/*** Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR） study,the mechanism of chromate removal by hydrogel was found to be non-specific adsorption,mainly due to ion exchange,as evidenced by the positively charged functional group,trimethyl ammonium-n＋（CH3）3,in the *** were accordingly determined by testing di？erent oxyanion adsorption onto the *** results of the chromate adsorption experiments illustrated that the amount of chromate adsorbed was nearly equal to that of the chloride released from the hydrogel,which is part of the evidence for ion *** and multi-oxyanion adsorption experiments were also performed,and it was demonstrated that ion removal was species independent,but charge dependent,another characteristic of the ion exchange *** was found that the same Langmuir model can be applied to best fit the findings of single and multi-oxyanion adsorption,which further indicates the mechanism of chromate removal is attributed to ion *** view of the above,the background anions compete for adsorption sites with chromate,evidenced by inhibitive chromate removal in the presence of background electrolytes in the batch studies,further echoing the ion exchange mechanism.

Development of conservation biological control programs requires the identifi-cation of sources that contribute to predator colonization of *** pygmaeus(Rambur)(Hemiptera:Miridae)is an efficient polyphagous predator used in biological con-trol programs in vegetable crops in *** have developed a marking method based on spraying with a solution of the brine shrimp Artemia spp.(Anostraca:Artemidac)cysts,followed by a PCR detection of Artemia DnA to monitor *** dispersal from banker plants to tomato *** conducted in climatic chambers show that the topical application of this marking solution on *** does not significantly reduce adult longevity and that it is detected up to 6 d after the *** this Artemia solution was applied on Calendula officinalis *** plants harboring *** and maintained outdoors,Artemia DnA was still detected on 62%of the insects after6 *** conducted field applications in commercial greenhouses have confirmed the usefulness of this method to monitor *** dispersal from banker plants to a newly planted tomato *** method can be used to assess arthropod movement,being an interesting molecular approach for further improving future pest management strategies.

Populations at the low latitude limits of a species range(rear-edge populations)are often considered more vulnerable to climate ***,their ability to track different environmental settings at a regional scale has been widely overlooked,although this may be relevant to accurately assess their adaptive capacity to cope with ongoing *** we tested whether the endemic African Chaffinch(Fringilla coelebs africana)tracks environmental changes(*** temperatures,snow cover)by rearranging their numbers between seasons(spring ***)along the altitude gradients of its northwestern African *** additionally tested whether these seasonal changes in abundance were paralleled by morphological variation,suggesting a process of population *** assessed African Chaffinch abundance in tree covered farmland and woodland sites distributed along an altitude gradient in spring and *** addition,we captured and measured chaffinches within the study gradient to explore the patterns of morphological *** results showed that chaffinches shifted to lowlands from snow covered highlands during *** addition,highland individuals showed longer and more concave wings than their lowland *** morphological traits are usually related to flight efficiency in migratory birds,which suggest the presence of altitudinal movements aimed to track the environmental seasonality caused by *** results suggest a potential role of altitudinal seasonality as a driver of regional diversification within the African Chaffinch populations,which could be occurring in other north African avian species given their relatively high endemicity in the *** evolutionary and conservation implications of these displacements have been often overlooked despite they can shape the adaptive capacity of rear-edge bird populations to face the ongoing environmental changes in this peripheral area of the Palearctic.

Iron and its alloys are attractive as biodegradable materials because of their low toxicity and suitable mechanical properties;however,they generally have a slow degradation *** that corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon where an exchange of electrons takes place,the application of magnetic fields from outside the body may accelerate the degradation of a ferrous temporary *** the present study,we have investigated the effect of alternating and direct low magnetic field(H=6.5 kA/m)on the corrosion process of pure iron(Fe)and an iron-manganese alloy(FeMnC)in modified Hanks’solution.A 14-day static immersion test was performed on the *** corrosion rate was assessed by mass and cross-sectional loss measurements,scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffractometry,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after *** results show that the presence of magnetic fields significantly accelerates the degradation rate of both materials,with the corrosion rate being twice as high in the case of Fe and almost three times as high for *** addition,a homogenous degradation layer is formed over the entire surface and the chemical composition of the degradation products is the same regardless of the presence of a magnetic field.

Biosphere reserves are protected areas whose purpose is to combine conservation and sustainable ***,their effectiveness has not been tested sufficiently,especially from an ecological and genetic ap*** this sense,the Peromyscus genus represents an excellent bioindicator to address these questions,due to its short life and high evolutionary rate and *** conservation managers,genetic structure can increase the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles exclusive of a subpopulation are more likely to disappear as a consequence of genetic drift in comparison with a panmictic *** we analyzed the abundance,movement distances,morphology/morphometry and genetic structure of 3 populations of Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)located in different protected zones of La Tigra national Park(Honduras).Our results are consistent among the 3 approaches and showed the highest values of abundance,morphometry and genetic diversity in the population located at the core zone,whereas non-statistically significant differences were found between buffer and transition zone populations,suggesting suitable effectiveness of conservation management in the core zone but a lack of ecological buffering function of the other *** addition,the low movement distances and high genetic structure among the studied populations provide evidence of poor conservation management in the buffer and transition ***,we discuss the utility of the novel methodology used in this work,combining morphometry,abundance and genetics,in testing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in biosphere reserves,and the value of the Peromyscus genus as a bioindicator.
