The positive ecological interaction between gap formation and natural regeneration has been examined but little research has been carried out on the effects of gaps on natural regeneration in forests under different intensities of *** study evaluates the composition,diversity,regeneration density and abundance of natural regeneration of tree species in gaps in undisturbed,intermittently disturbed,and disturbed forest *** Tano Forest Reserve in Ghana was the study area and three gaps each were selected in the three forest site *** circular subsampling areas of 1 m2 were delineated at 2 m spacing along north,south,east,and west transects within individual *** on natural regenerationisturbance was disproportional to gap *** diversity differed significantly between undisturbed and disturbed sites and,also between intermittently disturbed and disturbed sites for Simpson’s(1-D),Equitability(J),and Berger-Parker(B-P)***,there was no significant difference among forest sites for Shannon diversity(H)and Margalef richness(MI)*** species composition on the sites *** density on the disturbed site was significantly higher than on the two other *** abundance and density of shade-dependent species on all sites identified them as opportunistic replacements of gap-dependent *** species giving way to shade tolerant species is a natural process,thus make them worst variant in gap regeneration.

Association of autoimmune type atrophic corpus gastritis with Helicobacter pylori infection

AIM:To study the association between Helicobacter pylori(***)infection and autoimmune type atrophic gastritis. METHODS:Twenty-three patients with different grades of atrophic gastritis were analysed using enzyme immunoassay-based serology,immunoblot-based serology,and histology to reveal a past or a present *** *** addition,serum markers for gastric atrophy(pepsinogenⅠ,pepsinogenⅠ/Ⅱand gastrin)and autoimmunity[parietal cell antibodies(PCA), and intrinsic factor(IF),antibodies]were determined. RESULTS:Of the 14 patients with severe gastricatrophy,as demonstrated by histology and serum markers,and no evidence for an ongoing *** infection,eight showed *** antibodies by *** eight had elevated PCA and 4/8 also had IF *** the six immunoblot-negative patients with severe corpus atrophy,PCA and IF antibodies were detected in *** the patients with low to moderate grade atrophic gastritis(all except one with an ongoing *** infection),serum markers for gastric atrophy and autoimmunity were seldom ***,one *** negative patient with mild atrophic gastritis had PCA and IF antibodies suggestive of a pre-atrophic autoimmune gastritis. CONCLUSION:Signs of *** infection in autoimmune gastritis,and positive autoimmune serum markers in *** gastritis suggest an etiological role for *** in autoimmune gastritis.

Enhancement of biogas potential of primary sludge by co-digestion with cow manure and brewery sludge

Machine learning has been increasingly used in ***,in organic chemistry and other experiment-based fields,data collected from real experiments are inadequate and the current coronavirus disease(COVID-19)pandemic has made the situation even *** limited data resources may result in the low performance of modeling and affect the proper development of a control *** paper proposes a feasible machine learning solution to the problem of small sample size in the biopolymerization *** avoid overfitting,the variational auto-encoder and generative adversarial network algorithms are used for data *** random forest and artificial neural network algorithms are implemented in the modeling *** results prove that data augmentation techniques effectively improve the performance of the regression *** machine learning models were compared and the experimental results show that the random forest model with data augmentation by the generative adversarial network technique achieved the best performance in predicting the molecular weight on the training set(with an R^(2) of 0.94)and on the test set(with an R^(2) of 0.74),and the coefficient of determination of this model was 0.74.

Microtubule Depolymerization Affects Endocytosis and Exocytosis in the Tip and Influences Endosome Movement in Tobacco Pollen Tubes

Polarized organization of the cytoplasm of growing pollen tubes is maintained by coordinated function of actin filaments （AFs） and microtubules （MTs）. AFs convey post-Golgi secretory vesicles to the tip where some fuse with specific domains of the plasma membrane （PM）. Secretory activity is balanced by PM retrieval that maintains cell mem- brane economy and regulates the polarized composition of the PM, by dividing lipids/proteins between the shank and the tip. Although AFs play a key role in PM internalization in the shank, the role of MTs in exo-endocytosis needs to be characterized. The present results show that integrity of the MT cytoskeleton is necessary to control exo-endocytosis events in the tip. MT polymerization plays a role in promoting PM invagination in the apex of tobacco pollen tubes since nocodazole affected PM internalization in the tip and subsequent migration of endocytic vesicles from the apex for degradation. MT depolymerization in the apex and shank was associated with misallocation of a significantly greater amount of internalized PM to the Golgi apparatus and its early recycling to the secretory pathway. Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching （FRAP） experiments also showed that MT depolymerization in the tip region influenced the rate of exocytosis in the central domain of the apical PM.

On Modeling Bio-Scaffolds:Structural and Fluid Transport Characterization Based on 3-D Imaging Data

Bio-scaffolds which are most commonly open celled porous structures are increasingly used for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. A number of studies have shown that the bulk properties of such irregular structures are poorly modeled using idealized unit cell approaches. The paper therefore uses novel image based meshing techniques to explore both fluid flow and bulk structural properties of a bone scaffold, as accurate modeling of bio-scaffolds with non-uniform cellular structures is very important for the development of optimal scaffolds for tissue engineering application. In this study, a porous hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate (HA/TCP) bone scaffold has been scanned in a Micro-CT scanner, and converted into a volumetric mesh using image processing software developed by the authors. The resulting mesh was then exported to commercial FEA and CFD solvers for analysis. Initial FEA and CFD studies have shown promising results and have highlighted the importance of accurate modeling to understand how microstructures influence the mechanical property of the scaffold, and to analyze flow regimes through the sample. The work highlights the potential use of image based meshing for the ad hoc characterization of scaffolds as well as for assisting in the design of scaffolds with tailored strength, stiffness, and transport properties.

Impact of intraocular pressure fluctuations on progression of normal tension glaucoma

AIM:To investigate short-and long-term intraocular pressure(IOP)fluctuations and fur ther ocular and demographic parameters as predictors for normal tension glaucoma(NTG)***:This retrospective,longitudinal cohort study included 137 eyes of 75 patients with NTG,defined by glaucomatous optic disc or visual field defect with normal IOP(<21 mm Hg),independently from therapy *** fluctuation,mean,and maximum were inspected with a mean follow-up of 38 mo[standard deviation(SD)18 mo].Inclusion criteria were the performance of minimum two 48-hour profiles including perimetry,Heidelberg retina tomograph(HRT)imaging,and optic disc *** impact of IOP parameters,myopia,sex,cup-to-disc-ratio,and visual field results on progression of NTG were analyzed using Cox regression models.A sub-group analysis with results from optical coherence tomography(OCT)was ***:IOP fluctuations,average,and maximum were not risk factors for progression in NTG patients,although maximum IOP at the initial IOP profile was higher in eyes with progression than in eyes without progression(P=0.054).The 46/137(33.5%)eyes progressed over the followup *** progression(at least three progression confirmations)occurred in 28/137 eyes(20.4%).Most progressions were detected by perimetry(36/46).Longterm IOP mean over all pressure profiles was 12.8 mm Hg(SD 1.3 mm Hg);IOP fluctuation was 1.4 mm Hg(SD 0.8 mm Hg).The progression-free five-year rate was 58.2%(SD 6.5%).CONCLUSION:Short-and long-term IOP fluctuations do not result in progression of *** functional changes are most likely to happen,NTG should be monitored with visual field testing more often than with other devices.

AIM:To investigate the distribution of the placental form of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in colon polyps in order to evaluate the role of GST-pi in these tissues. METHODS: Sixteen polyp tissues removed at colonoscopy were examined. Tissues were investigated histologically and ultrastructurally. GST-pi expression was also analysed immunohistochemically, using peroxidase anti-peroxidase (PAP) method and immunogold labelling method, for light and electron microscope respectively. RESULTS: All polyp tissues examined were adenoma of low, mild and high-grade dysplasia as shown in the histopathological reports. Nevertheless, the examination of the above specimens with electron microscope revealed that 3 of 9 adenoma of mild dysplasia had ultrastuctural features similar to high-grade dysplasia adenoma. GST-pi was variably expressed in adenoma, with the lowest relative levels occurring in low-gradeadenoma and the highest levels found in high-grade adenoma. GST-pi was located mainly in undifferentiated epithelial cells. GST-pi positive particles were found in the cytoplasm and especially in the nucleus adjacent to the nuclear membrane of these cells. CONCLUSION:The overexpression of GST-pi in mildgrade adenomas with significant subcellular changes and in the majority of high-grade dysplasia adenoma suggests that this might be related to the carcinogenetic proceeding. Immunohistochemical localization of GST-pi in combination with ultrastructural changes indicate that GST-pi might be a sensitive agent for the detection of preneoplastic transformations in adenoma.

Predicting sandy soil moisture content with hyperspectral imaging

In this study,a rapid and non-invasive technology for predicting soil moisture content(SMC)was presented based on hyperspectral imaging(HSI).Firstly,a set of HSI system was developed to collect both spectral(400-1000 nm)and spatial(1620×841 pixels)information from sandy soil samples with variable SMC levels in the *** component analysis(PCA)transformation,K-means clustering,and several other image processing methods were performed to obtain a region of interest(ROI)of soil sample from the original HSI ***,256 optimal spectral wavelengths were selected from the average reflectance of the ROI,and 28 textural features were extracted using a gray-level co-occurrence matrix(GLCM).Data dimensionality reduction was conducted on both the spectral information and textural information by using a partial least square *** latent variables(LVs)extracted from the spectral information,four LVs extracted from the textural information and fused data were used to build regression models with a three-layer BPNN,*** results showed that all of the three calibration models achieved high prediction accuracy,particularly when using spectral information with R^(2)_(C)=0.9532 and RMSEC=***,validation models demonstrate that predicting SMC using fused data is more effective than using spectral reflectance and textural features separately,with a R^(2)_(P)=0.9350 and RMSEP=0.0141,thus proving that the HSI technique is capable of detecting SMC.
