Radon exhalation from phosphogypsum stabilized in sulfur polymer cement

Phosphogypsum (PG), primary by-product from phosphoric acid production, is accumulated in large stock-piles which were active until 2010, when spills were banned. It is considered as NORM material that contains radionuclides from 238U and decay series which are of most radiotoxicity. PG was valorized and/or recycled in a building material, sulfur polymer cement (SPC). The SPC-PG samples reach the international regulation to use in the manufacture of building materials without radiological restrictions, except the sample with the 50% of PG. Under normal conditions of ventilation the contribution to the expected radon indoor concentration is also below the international recommendation.

Comparative transcriptomics reveals hidden issues in the plant response to arthropod herbivores

Plants experience different abiotic/biotic stresses,which trigger their molecular machinery to cope with them. Besides general mechanisms prompted by many stresses, specific mechanisms have been introduced to optimize the response to individual threats. However, these key mechanisms are difficult to identify. Here, we introduce an in-depth species-specific transcriptomic analysis and conduct an extensive meta-analysis of the responses to related species to gain more knowledge about plant responses. The spider mite Tetranychus urticae was used as the individual species, several arthropod herbivores as the related species for meta-analysis, and Arabidopsis thaliana plants as the common host. The analysis of the transcriptomic data showed typical common responses to herbivory, such as jasmonate signaling or glucosinolate biosynthesis. Also, a specific set of genes likely involved in the particularities of the Arabidopsis-spider mite interaction was discovered. The new findings have determined a prominent role in this interaction of the jasmonateinduced pathways leading to the biosynthesis of anthocyanins and tocopherols. Therefore, tandem individual/general transcriptomic profiling has been revealed as an effective method to identify novel relevant processes and specificities in the plant response to environmental stresses.

Trace elements, isotopic modeling and U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon age constraints are used to reconstruct the eruption history and magmatic processes of the Piedra Parada Caldera. In the early Eocene, the crystal-poor Barda Colorada ignimbrite(BCI), having >>15% micro-porphyritic crystals with respect to magmatic components, erupted a volume estimated in more than 300 km^3. The Piedra Parada caldera is located in the Patagonian Andes foreland, at the southern end of the calderas field of the Pilcaniyeu Volcanic Belt(PVB). This belt is related to an extensional tectonic setting as a result of the collision of the Farallon-Aluk ridge with South America, which enabled the development of a transform ocean/continental plate margin followed by the detachment of the Aluk plate and the opening of a slab window. The BCI extra-caldera Plateau is a >100 m thick deposit, having a lower unit with high silica(Si O_2> 76 wt.%),potassium poor rhyolitic composition(trondhjemitic like magma), and an upper unit with normal to high potassium rhyolitic composition(granitic like magma). A trace elements modeling of the BCI units shows that the BCI lower and upper units did not evolve from fractionation or immiscibility in the shallow magma reservoir. The BCI also have a primitive isotopic signature(initial87 Sr/86 Sr =0.7031-0.7049 and ε_(Nd)= +3.4 to +3.65). Thus, tectonic, compositional and isotopic constraints suggest the fast ascent of high silica magmas to a shallow reservoir, and point to an upper mantle origin for these rhyolitic magmas in a transitional(Orogenic-Anorogenic) tectono-magmatic setting. U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon crystallization ages of the Syn-caldera stage BCI units(56 -51.5 Ma) show a protracted life of 5 Ma for this caldera reservoir. The age of 52.9 ± 0.3 Ma is considered the best fit for the possible maximum age for the caldera collapse. Quick Review and Technical Approach for Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface Surgery

Regenerative peripheral nerve interface RPNI’s surgery was originally designed for prosthetic control. RPNI’s has demonstrated to be an effective tool to prevent neuroma formation by providing free muscle grafts as physiological targets for peripheral nerve ingrowth. Nerve transection injuries can result in painful neuromas that adversely affect patient recovery. This is especially significant following amputation surgeries, but they can also be used in surgeries in which the nerves can be visualized with a noticeable lesion. The first series of patients undergoing RPNI implantation for treatment of symptomatic postamputation neuromas was published in 2016. The series included a report of 46 patients undergoing RPNI. The clinical outcomes of RPNI have been optimistic with a reduction in neuroma pain up to 73% and phantom pain reduction of 53% along the uniformly high patient satisfaction. Since then, studies have been expanded, and knowledge regarding physiology has increased, providing us with new tools for a better understanding and giving these procedures more benefits and applications.
