Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the ocular surface

BACKGROUND There have been increased reports of dry eyes in the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic *** To analyze the differences in tear film properties from pre-and post-pandemic of the COVID-19 *** It was a retrospective comparative *** were divided into three groups according to the data of multimodal ocular surface evaluation:(1) Group 1 if it was before Portugal lockdown decision(from August 2019 to March 2020);(2) Group 2 if it was after Portugal lockdown decision but without mask mandate(from April 2020 to October 2020);and(3) Group 3 if it was after Portugal lockdown but with mask mandate in health public highway(from November 2020 to April 2021).The following variables were analyzed:Lipid layer thickness,blink rate,Schirmer test,tear meniscus height,tear osmolarity,non-invasive break-up time,and loss area of the meibomian *** The study included 548 eyes of 274 patients,aged 18 years to 89 years,with a mean age of 66.15 ± 13.40 years at the time of multimodal ocular surface *** to group 1:(1) Mean lipid layer thickness was better in group 2(P = 0.001) and group 3(P < 0.001);(2) Schirmer test was similar in group 2(P = 0.576) and better in group 3(P = 0.002);(3) Tear osmolarity and loss area of the meibomian glands were worse in group 2(P = 0.031 and P < 0.001,respectively) and in group 3(both with P < 0.001);(4) Blink rate and tear meniscus height were similar in group 2(P = 0.821 and P = 0.370,respectively) and worse in group 3(P < 0.001 and P = 0.038,respectively);and(5) Non-invasive break-up time was worse in group 2(P = 0.030) and similar in group 3(P = 0.263).CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that differences existed in tear film properties comparing data from the pre-and post-pandemic of the COVID-19 era.

Rhizosphere Soil Microbial Characteristics and Enzyme Activities under Cajanus cajan and Milletia laurentii Grown in Scientific Center of Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo

This study was conducted at the scientific center of Brazzaville. The objective was to assess the microbial characteristics and enzymes activities in the rhizosphere soil of Cajanus cajan and Milletia lauurentii. These plants have great importance in food and forestry. Microbial diversity management in the rhizosphere is the key for sustainable crop production or forest durability. DNA metagenomic sequencing was used to analyze the whole bacterial diversity, the microbial biomass was determinate by the fumigation-extraction method and the enzymes by the p-nitrophenol-β-D-glucoside for β-glucosidase, the p-nitrophenyl-N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminide for β-Glucosaminidase. Dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase were quantified using 2,3,5-tryphenyl tetrazolium chloride and p-nitophenylphosphate respectively. The results show that, in Cajanus cajan culturable bacteria genera were mainly Acidobacterium, Skermanella, Rhodoplanes, Bacillus, Chloroflexus, Steroidobacter, Sphingomonas and Bradyrhizobium while in Milletia laurentii: Rhodoplanes, Bradyrhizobium, Bacillus, Sphingobacterium, Acidobacterium, Mesorhizobium, Nitrospira were the principal genera. In the two rhizosphere soils investigated, the uncultured bacteria exhibited relatively higher abundance, often for the same genera, than culturable bacteria. Metagenomic studies have revealed more bacterial diversity in each compared to when culturable bacteria were taken into account alone. The MBC and MBN were higher in the rhizosphere of Milletia than in rhizosphere of Cajanus. The same trend was observed with the enzyme activities. PCA of culturable and NMDS of unculturable soil bacteria genera shows that factors mainly involved in the carbon cycle such as MBC, members of the microbial community i.e. Acidobacterium, Skermanella, Chloroflexus, sand, C, β-glucosaminidase and dehydrogenase, were strongly correlated with Cajanus cajan. BACKGROUND Marginal donation after circulatory death(DCD)liver grafts are carefully used to combat the constant shortage of ***,the worst outcomes are mainly related to severe ischemia-reperfusion-injury and the dangerous effect of various inflammatory cytokines(CK).The machine perfusion(MP)is a promising device to rescue these *** To analyze the role of MP connected to a sorbent cartridge(PerSorb®)and used for very damaged DCD pig *** Seven grafts were procured from pigs from a *** were made very marginal with at least 60 minutes of donor warm ischemia time and 24 hours of static-cold ischemia time:(1)3 grafts were perfused in hypothermic MP with PerSorb(Sorb);(2)2 other grafts in hypothermic MP(HMP)without the cartridge(NoSorb);and(3)The other 2 livers stored in the ice box(NoTreat).The CK were measured at HMP start(T0)and at the end(Tend).Biopsies were taken at T0 and *** All 5 grafts treated with HMP had a negative lactate trend after 3 hours of treatment(8.83 at T0 vs 6.4 at Tend of Sorb;15 at T0 vs 5.45 at Tend for NoSorb,P value>0.05).At Tend,both Sorb and NoSorb groups had better hemodynamic parameters,comparable between the two ***-linked immunosorbent assay analysis showed a reduction of monocyte chemotactic protein-1,tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1βfor NoSorb group at Tend and a complete downregulation to physiological levels of the same CK in Sorb livers after 3 hours of *** showed a reduction of the perisinusoidal edema for the Sorb grafts compared with the NoSorb *** These data suggest a potential protective role of treatment of grafts with MP and sorbent cartridge in reducing the inflammatory response after a severe ischemic injury.

Embryo-to-lamella transition of grain boundary twins in magnesium

A combined experimental and computational analysis is performed to investigate the less commonly studied embryo-to-lamella transition of deformation twins in magnesium. This work aims to understand the structural variables controlling the embryo-to-lamella transition from grain boundaries. Statistical analysis of hundreds of early-stage twins in the lightly deformed microstructure reveals a prevailing wedge shape,with a much thicker base along the grain boundary(GB) where they originate and a thinner tip terminating in the crystal. The analysis also shows that the GB base is super thick and identifies a minimum GB twin thickness among all early-stage twins that is about one micron. A crystal plasticity-based full-field model is employed to calculate the driving forces to migrate the boundary of a three-dimensional GB twin embryo. The stress analysis, considering a full range of embryo shapes and neighboring grain orientations, indicate that the twin embryo is most likely going to form a wedge shape when it first propagates. The calculations predict that the thickness of the embryo at the GB needs to be significantly larger than its length into the crystal in order to propagate into the crystal. The analysis finds that the more aligned the twin embryo variant is with basal slip in the neighboring grain, the thinner the twin embryo needed for propagation.

Pollen Tube Growth: a Delicate Equilibrium Between Secretory and Endocytic Pathways

Although pollen tube growth is a prerequisite for higher plant fertilization and seed production, the processes leading to pollen tube emission and elongation are crucial for understanding the basic mechanisms of tip growth. It was generally accepted that pollen tube elongation occurs by accumulation and fusion of Golgi-derived secretory vesicles （SVs） in the apical region, or clear zone, where they were thought to fuse with a restricted area of the apical plasma membrane （PM）, defining the apical growth domain. Fusion of SVs at the tip reverses outside cell wall material and provides new segments of PM. However, electron microscopy studies have clearly shown that the PM incorporated at the tip greatly exceeds elongation and a mechanism of PM retrieval was already postulated in the mid-nineteenth century. Recent studies on endocytosis during pollen tube growth showed that different endocytic pathways occurred in distinct zones of the tube, including the apex, and led to a new hypothesis to explain vesicle accumulation at the tip; namely, that endocytic vesicles contribute substantially to V-shaped vesicle accumulation in addition to SVs and that exocytosis does not involve the entire apical domain. New insights suggested the intriguing hypothesis that modulation between exo- and endocytosis in the apex contributes to maintain PM polarity in terms of lipid/protein composition and showed distinct degradation pathways that could have different functions in the physiology of the cell. Pollen tube growth in vivo is closely regulated by interaction with style molecules. The study of endocytosis and membrane recycling in pollen tubes opens new perspectives to studying pollen tube-style interactions in vivo.

Energy balance model to assess the resistance of ballistic protection materials

NATO standards"AEP-2920 Procedures for the Evaluation and Classification of Personal Armor"and NIJ Standard-0101.06,indicate the method to statistically assess the resistance of personal ballistic protection *** be validated and accepted through these procedures,a personal ballistic protection material should withstand an impact of a specific projectile with a probability of a partial penetration confidence level higher than 90%.The present study introduces an energy equilibrium method to assess the confidence level for the probability of partial penetration of ductile and brittle *** experiments performed in the Ballistics laboratory of the Royal Military Academy in Belgium,use a modified pendulum method that allowed the quantification of the energy balance before and after the ballistic *** results were then compared with the ones obtained using the method specified by the NATO standard and NIJ 0101.06,mentioned *** outcome of this comparison shows the tendency of the values obtained by the pendulum method to faithfully follow the values obtained according to NATO and NIJ *** presented method is not based on statistical estimations,but instead,an exact method,of computing the energy absorbed by the tested *** is an advantage for the cases when the material to be evaluated is expensive or it is in the development phase and mass production is not possible.

An automated water dispensing system for controlling fires in coal yards

In spite of recent moves to wean the world of fossil fuels,coal remains the main source of power in many *** yards are prone to spontaneous ignition,a problem faced in every country that stores or transports *** on the environment-temperature,ventilation,and the rank of the coal-heating and self-ignition can be a longer or shorter process,but the possibility can never be entirely dismissed.A plethora of studies have modelled this oxidation behavior and proposed *** often,human intervention is necessary,which is both slow and dangerous for the frefghters *** this study,we propose to build a complete frefghting solution which is mounted on a number of towers sufcient to cover the area of an open coal yard,complete with *** tower includes an inexpensive infrared detector,a water dispenser and a controller programmed to identify areas of elevated temperature,and actuate the *** heat direction algorithm calculates the parameters to position the water dispenser so that it covers the area.A prototype has been built from inexpensive components to demonstrate the efectiveness at detecting and extinguishing arising fres,and a solution has been costed for the coal yard in the case *** work has been conducted in collaboration with the managers of the coal yard of a power plant.

Interface-facilitated stable plasticity in ultra-fine layered FeAl/FeAl_(2) micro-pillar at high temperature

Fe-Al compounds possess a combination of high strength and corrosion resistance at high ***,increasing Al content to make them lighter results in ***,we investigate the high-temperature behavior of a novel,lightweight,ultra-fine-layered FeAl/FeAl_(2) *** report a transition from unstable to stable plasticity at 450℃.Below 450℃,deformation is dominated by localized shear deformation within the soft FeAl layers,while above 450℃,it proceeds by co-deformation between Fe Al and the brittle FeAl_(2) *** show that co-deformation is associated with the temperature at which the interface converts from sliding to sourcing dislocations for Fe Al_(2).
