Rodents are reservoirs of various types of hantavirus,some of which are agents of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in *** hantavirus is associated with a single rodent host species but successive spill-over events may eventually lead to host-switching and new species’becoming host of a given *** study aims to gain an understanding of the spatial ecology of two hantavirus-host species,Akodon azarae,and Oligoryzomys flavescens,by identifying factors modulating their home range sizes and stability,and by evaluating intra-and interspecific spatial aggregation for these species and a third one—Oxymycterus rufus—living in *** this,eleven capture-mark-recapture surveys were carried out,spanning 22 *** found that *** males have larger and more mobile home ranges than females,independently of the ***,males could likely have a more relevant role in the transmission of hantavirus because of their greater exposure both to a higher number of contacts between individuals and viral contamination of the ***,*** individuals showed negligible displacements of their home range through time,which could limit the range of hantavirus spread in host *** *** is host to lechiguanas hantavirus(pathogenic to humans)this result encompasses epidemiological relevance,for it may imply the existence of local foci of ***,individuals of both species performed excursions outside their home *** events could enable hantavirus spread over distances beyond the normal range of movements and lead to new hantavirus outbreaks in formerly non-infected rodent populations,favoring the persistence of the virus in nature.

On Modeling Bio-Scaffolds:Structural and Fluid Transport characterization based on 3-D Imaging Data

Bio-scaffolds which are most commonly open celled porous structures are increasingly used for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. A number of studies have shown that the bulk properties of such irregular structures are poorly modeled using idealized unit cell approaches. The paper therefore uses novel image based meshing techniques to explore both fluid flow and bulk structural properties of a bone scaffold, as accurate modeling of bio-scaffolds with non-uniform cellular structures is very important for the development of optimal scaffolds for tissue engineering application. In this study, a porous hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate (HA/TcP) bone scaffold has been scanned in a Micro-cT scanner, and converted into a volumetric mesh using image processing software developed by the authors. The resulting mesh was then exported to commercial FEA and cFD solvers for analysis. Initial FEA and cFD studies have shown promising results and have highlighted the importance of accurate modeling to understand how microstructures influence the mechanical property of the scaffold, and to analyze flow regimes through the sample. The work highlights the potential use of image based meshing for the ad hoc characterization of scaffolds as well as for assisting in the design of scaffolds with tailored strength, stiffness, and transport properties.

We performed experiments to determine the critical moment for movement initiation of a millimeter bead on a rotating rough *** corresponding critical angular velocities were measured for glass and stainless-steel ball bearings over two different rough surfaces with glued glass beads.A basic theoretical analysis was developed to explain the observed *** the expectation of a simple approach with the presence of the obstacles offered by a rough surface could be sufficient to describe the problem,we prove here that the sole con sideration of these obstacles,and even friction,are insufficient to explain the results in the range of a few-millimeter glass *** the thermodynamic work of adhesion between surfaces is significant,the adhesion forces must be considered in the force balance for particle detachment:.This effect is a determinant for describing theoretically and numerically the dynamics of millimeter particles.

A study was undertaken in February 2012 to understand the knowledge and practices of rice farmers about weedy rice in two municipalities of Iloilo, Philippines. The specific objectives of the study were to establish what rice farmers know about weedy rice, examine rice farmers’ practices in managing weedy rice, and recommend policies on weedy rice management based on the results of the study. Farmers’ knowledge of weedy rice did not differ much between two villages. Results showed that 41% from the second most affected village and 33% from the most affected village thought that weedy rice cannot reduce the market value of the harvested rice. Majority of the farmers (68%) responded that awns can be absent in some weedy rice and about 40% of the farmers did not know that seeds of weedy rice have dormancy. cutting the weedy rice panicles at harvest, as the best way of reducing weedy rice, was practiced by majority of the respondents (82%) from the most affected village. Our study suggests that there is a need to increase awareness about weedy rice among Asian farmers.

The calamitous consequences of 2017 Hurricane Maria for the caribbean island of Dominica highlighted the acute and increasing susceptibility of the region to disasters. Despite increasing international attention to disaster risk reduction, recovery from hazard events can be especially lengthy and difficult for small island developing states. In this article, we build on existing understandings of disaster risk as a physical and social condition, showing that historical processes are fundamental to understanding how conditions of risk emerge and persist over time. We take an integrated approach to analyzing the drivers of risk accumulation, using the example of Dominica, where processes set in motion during the colonial period have shaped the location of people and assets, the degree to which they might be harmed, the societal repercussions of that harm and the prospects for recovery. We focus on the underlying economic vulnerabilities and physical exposure to hazards created by agricultural, economic, and social practices, and successive disaster responses that have constrained recovery. Uncovering these historical drivers and persistent issues, elucidates lessons for pursuing a more resilient development trajectory, including through the promotion of economic restructuring and diversification, and land reform.

This paper describes our findings regarding the accumulation of motile bacteria at the rear of a confined obstacle and the physical description of the mechanisms at play. We found that the modification of flow due to the presence of the obstacle produces vorticity that favor the diffusion of bacteria towards the downstream stagnation point. By testing different flow rates, we determined the range in which bacteria accumulate. More interestingly, we observe that hydrodynamic interaction between the bacteria and the top and bottom surface of the microfluidic chip maintain the bacteria in the region where the flow velocity is lower than their own velocity. In the case of non-motile bacteria, this effect is not observed because bacteria follow the streamlines as passive tracers do.
