redox responsive Transcription Factor1 （rrTF1） in Arabidopsis is rapidly and transiently upregulated by H202, as well as biotic- and abiotic-induced redox signals. rrTF1 is highly conserved in angio- sperms, but its physiological role remains elusive. Here we show that inactivation of rrTF1 restricts and overexpression promotes reactive oxygen species （rOS） accumulation in response to stress. Transgenic lines overexpressing rrTF1 are impaired in root and shoot development, light sensitive, and susceptible to Alternaria brassicae infection. These symptoms are diminished by the beneficial root endophyte Piriformospora indica, which reduces rOS accumulation locally in roots and systemi- cally in shoots, and by antioxidants and rOS inhibitors that scavenge rOS. More than 800 genes were detected in mature leaves and seedlings of transgenic lines overexpressing rrTF1; ∽40% of them have stress-, redox-, rOS-regulated-, rOS-scavenging-, defense-, cell death- and related functions. Bioinformatic analyses and in vitro DNA binding assays demonstrate that rrTF1 binds to GCC-box-like sequences in the promoter of rrTFl-responsive genes. Upregulation of rrTF1 by stress stimuli and H202 requires WrKY18/40/60. rrTF1 is co-regulated with the phylogenet- ically related rAP2.6, which contains a GCC-box-like sequence in its promoter, but transgenic lines overexpressing rAP2.6 do not accumulate higher rOS levels. rrTF1 also stimulates systemic rOS accumulation in distal non-stressed leaves. We conclude that the elevated levels of the highly conserved rrTF1 induce rOS accumulation in response to rOS and rOS-producing abiotic and biotic stress signals.

Effect of recreation on the Species richness and Diversity of rotifers in Ponds

Planktonic rotifers were examined from April to October 2007 in two ponds created by sand extraction: Hubertus III (infrequently used for recreation)—pond I and Stawiki (commonly used for recreation)—pond II. The ponds are located within the protected Landscape Complex “Szopienice-Borki” in Silesian Upland (SW Poland). A total number of 58 taxa of rotifers were noted. The number of rotifer species and their densities were smaller in pond I than in pond II. In pond I, Polyarthra species were the most abundant, accounting for 48% of total rotifer density, whereas in pond II, Keratella cochlearis reached the highest density (accounting for 36% of total density). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant difference between communities of rotifers in species diversity (F = 5.88, p = 0.02) and species richness (F = 5.57, p = 0.03). The research proved that the pond commonly used for recreation (pond II) is characterized by a higher trophic state. results of this study indicate that the methods and range of use of water bodies by humans have an important influence on the species richness and diversity of communities of planktonic rotifers.

BACKGrOUND Data regarding the neuroradiology features of the West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease(WNV NID)is rather *** contribute to the knowledge of the WNV NID,we present a patient with a combination of encephalitis and acute flaccid paresis,with cauda equina arachnoiditis as the main magnetic resonance(Mr)*** SUMMArY A 72-year-old female patient was admitted due to fever,headache and gait *** the first several days she developed somnolence,aphasia,urinary incontinence,constipation,and asymmetric lower extremities *** fluid analysis indicated *** brain computed tomography and Mr were unremarkable,while spinal Mr demonstrated cauda equina enhancement without cord *** testing revealed WNV IgM and IgG antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid,which confirmed acute WNV *** treatment was *** two months only a slight improvement was noticed but cognitive impairment,loss of sphincter control and asymmetric inferior extremities weakness *** patient died after a month on chronic *** Cauda equina arachnoiditis is a rare,but possible neuroradiological feature in acute flaccid paresis form of WNV NID.

Histopathological Investigation of the Stomach of rats Fed a 60% Genetically Modified Corn Diet

Genetic modification (GM) represents new opportunities for enhanced crop features such as improved insect resistance and herbicide tolerance. The technology allows for cross-species alterations, therefore potentially allowing a vast array of novel traits. Many GM crops have been developed and approved for human and animal consumption. The present study investigated a triple-stacked GM corn variety containing modifications for insect resistance (via cry1Ab and cry3Bb1 genes) and herbicide tolerance (via an EPSPS gene), which was fed to rats for six months. The study investigated the mucosa of the stomach. Alterations to tight junction apposition, gland dilatations with epithelial elongation and dysplasia in the GM-fed rats were observed. These results indicate that GM-corn may have an effect on rat stomach mucosa, which may have health implications.

Electrically tunable generation of vectorial vortex beams with micro-patterned liquid crystal structures

We develop a new method for smooth and continuous space-variant alignment of the liquid crystal medium in micro-patterned structures, which is based on a radial micro-structured pattern of polymeric ribbons exhibiting out-of-plane orientation with respect to the ITO-coated glass plates. Thanks to the broad range of electrical tunability of the optical retardation for the micro-patterned liquid crystal structures, transformation of the fundamental Gaussian beam into different types of specific beams, including generalized cylindrical vector beams, vortex beams, and vectorial vortex beams, is efficiently demonstrated.
