Objective: To evaluate the structural and chemical composition of plant and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities promoted by hexanic, ethanolic and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus ***: Organic fractions were characterized through UPLC-MS and *** potential was performed through DPPH and molybdenum phosphate *** and antifungal assays were performed in accordance with Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute ***: The obtained biomass of Conocarpus erectus leaves showed the high presence of glucose(0.45 g/L), cellulose(28.69%), Na(55.126 μg/L) and K(31.163 μg/L).We identified seven compounds in the hexanic and ethyl acetate fractions, and eight compounds in ethanolic ***, phenolic compounds are prevalent in all organic fractions with values of(10.04 ± 0.24),(221.26 ± 1.84),(340.53 ± 0.84) mg/g GAE to hexanic, ethyl acetate and ethanolic fraction, *** results showed a high potential in ethyl acetate fraction(71.82 ± 6.87)% and(10.89 ± 0.05)% in DPPH and molybdenum phosphate techniques, *** ethanolic fraction showed moderate bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and presented a high fungistatic potential for all Candida species ***: Organic fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus erectus present antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and these findings contribute to scientific information for the effectiveness on use of this plant in the development of a phytotherapic compound.

An 800 kV electric power substation can have more than one hundred of porcelain multicone type insulators supporting busbar *** or more sections in series,having middle and end fittings,compose these *** process can cause degradation of the cement used in this type of insulator and this fact can affect its dielectric performance under heavy *** paper presents results of an investigation based on power frequency high voltage tests performed on 800 kV porcelain multicone type insulators,removed from service after having operated for more than 20 years,as well a non-used one that had been stored on site for long *** insulators were tested in different arrangements:each section at a time and the two sections assembled in series,as actually used insulator *** tests were carried out under artificial rain ranging from 1 mm/min to 5 mm/*** results have confirmed a reduction of up to 30% in the insulator power frequency flashover voltage under 5 mm/min rain conditions and gave important information to the utility about radial cracks that were observed in many insulators and about the discharge mechanisms along the insulators under rain.

Objective:To evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of saline extract from Tithonia diversifolia leaves by phytochemical bioprospecting,and investigate its safety against animal ***:The saline extract was prepared,with NaCl(0.15 M),by constant stirring of the dried and pulverized leaves,followed by volume reduction by *** extract was phytochemical characterized using ultra-performance liquid chromatography,and total phenol and flavonoid analysis also was *** antioxidant capacity was determined through DPPH*radical,the antimicrobial property was evaluated against standard bacteria and fungi,and the viability assays were performed against mice ***:Fifteen compounds were identified belonging to two main classes terpenoids and *** extract showed 22.185 mg GAE/g of total phenolic compounds and 3.220 mg QE/g of ***,extract showed higher antioxidant ability similar to butylated hydroxytoluene a standard molecule[(3.042±0.019)mg AAE/g and(4.12±0.10)mg AAE/g to saline extract and butylated hydroxytoluene,respectively].The antimicrobial assays demonstrated that the extract had a significant antifungal potential against Candida species and could be used with safety against mice splenocytes,in concentrations lower than 50μg/mL,promoting higher proliferation in these ***:Saline extract from Tithonia diversifolia leaves presents potential antioxidant,antifungal properties and induces immunostimulation in mice splenocytes.

Preoperative and Postoperative Spirometry in Patients Undergoing Lobectomy for Sequelae of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Objective: To assess preoperative and postoperative spirometry values in patients undergoing lobectomy for sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis. Method: A total of 20 patients (10 males) with history of treatment for tuberculosis and presenting with symptomatic sequelae (repeat infection or hemoptysis) who sought assistance at the chest surgery outpatient clinic between 11.09.07 and 04.02.10, were selected for the study. Only patients that met theeligibility criteria (symptomatic, submitted to tuberculosis treatment) were included in the study. The age of patients ranged from 15 to 56 years (mean: 35.75 years). The average treatment time for tuberculosis was 6 months and onset of symptoms occurred between 01 and 32 years after treatment. To assess the impact of surgery on the variables VC, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, FEF and PEF preoperative values were compared with postoperative values at 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th month using the paired t test. The level of significance (α) applied for all tests was 5% where a value of p 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 11 patients were treated because of recurrent infections and 9 because of haemoptysis. The most common lobectomy was right upper lobectomy (7 patients), followed by left upper lobectomy (6 patients), left lower lobectomy (6 patients), and right middle lobectomy (1 patient). There were no postoperative complications. There was no postoperative mortality. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that, at the 12th postoperative month, spirometric parameters of patients with tuberculosis sequelae submitted to lobectomy had returned to preoperative levels.

2-D DOA Estimation in a Cuboid Array Based on Metaheuristic Algorithms and Maximum Likelihood

This paper proposes to apply the genetic algorithm and the firefly algorithm to enhance the estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA) angle of electromagnetic signals of a smart antenna array. This estimation is essential for beamforming, where the antenna array radiating pattern is steered to provide faster and reliable data transmission with increased coverage. This work proposes using metaheuristics to improve a maximum likelihood DOA estimator for an antenna array arranged in a uniform cuboidal geometry. The DOA estimation performance of the proposed algorithm was compared to that of MUSIC on different two dimensions scenarios. The metaheuristic algorithms present better performance than the well-known MUSIC algorithm.

Effect of Zn Sputtering Rate on the Morphological and Optical Properties of ZnO Films

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited onto glass substrates by reactive radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering using a metallic zinc target. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to monitor and control the Zn sputtering rate for the deposition of the ZnO films. Film thicknesses ranged from 350 to 750 nm. Optical transmittances greater than 80% were observed in the wavelength interval from 450 nm to 650 nm. The energy gap of the films remained constant at (3.28 ± 0.01) eV. The surface morphology was found to be homogeneous with well-distributed structures. Surface roughness was dependent on the Zn sputtering rate, indicating that greater densities of Zn atoms increase the surface diffusion. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the ZnO films were polycrystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite structure and preferential growth along the (002) plane.

Association between Infrared Thermography, Blood Count and Creatine Kinase in the Evaluation of the Welfare of Vaquejada Horses

The Quarter-Horses regularly participate in non-traditional sports that simulate activities on cattle ranches. In the vaquejada races, the horses run at about 30 km/h, reaching maximum heart rates of around 200 bpm, indicating the great physical effort during competitions and with that could impact welfare. To test the hypothesis that vaquejada horses can be evaluated for the quality of welfare through a combination of non-invasive and invasive methods, an experiment was developed that aimed to assess the quality of welfare through thermography and blood biomarkers before and after vaquejada races. Ten vaquejada horses, which were in regular competition, were submitted to the vaquejadas racing test were used. Thermography was performed in 14 regions of interest (head, neck and thorax) in the following phases: pre-race and +1, +4 and +24 hours of the races. Blood samples were collected in pre-race, immediately after and +1, +4 and +24 hours of the races. Results were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey’s test, with p set at 5%. Thermography showed that local temperatures before the race and +24 hours after the races were similar (p > 0.05), as well as between +1 and +4 hours after the races (p > 0.05), which showed higher surface temperatures than the first group (pre-race and +24 hours) (p 0.05) after the exercises. In conclusion, the vaquejada horses evaluated by infrared thermography and blood analyses maintained the quality of well-being, with the physiological elevation of several parameters after the races and recovery in less than 24 hours after the races. Thermographic images were also able to help in the analysis of the regions of interest that have contact with harnesses, demonstrating that the use of adequate and correct equipment does not compromise animal welfare.

Verification of Macro-and Micronutrient Intake in the First Year of Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Using MSM Method

Background: Bariatric surgery is an alternative treatment for obesity. However, physicians need to be aware of the possible consequences of nutritional deficiencies with this type of surgery. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of inadequacy of macro- and micronutrients from the diet in patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass after 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Methods: We performed a longitudinal, observational, clinical study during preoperatively and 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperatively (n = 95 patients). We collected information from medical records of patients in a Reference Clinic of Bariatric Surgery. Quantitative food intake was analyzed by ADS Nutri? and Multiple Source Method? software. The obtained data were compared with the daily-recommended intake in accordance with specific guidelines for bariatric surgery. Data were analyzed using t-tests, Mann-Whitney test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey’s test. Results: There was a high prevalence of inadequacy of macronutrients and micronutrients from food in the postoperatively period. However, only vitamin B12 intake was adequate based on the daily recommended intake. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the intake of nutrients by feeding is below current recommendations. Individual nutritional counseling with a therapeutic plan for adequate nutrition and prescription supplements are important to ensure that nutritional recommendations are adhered to.
