Juvenile ferric iron prevents microbiota dysbiosis and colitis in adult rodents

AIM: To assess whether juvenile chronic ferric iron ingestion limit colitis and dysbiosis at adulthood in rats and mice. METHODS: Two sets of experiments were designed. In the first set, recently weaned mice were either orally administered ferrous (Fe2+) iron salt or ferric (Fe3+) microencapsulated iron for 6 wk. The last week of experiments trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) colitis was induced. In the second set, juvenile rats received the microencapsulated ferric iron for 6 wk and were also submitted to TNBS colitis during the last week of experiments. In both sets of experiments, animals were sacrificed 7 d after TNBS instillation. Severity of the inflammation was assessed by scoring macroscopic lesions and quantifying colonic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. Alteration of the microflora profile was estimated usingquantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) by measuring the evolution of total caecal microflora, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and enterobacteria. RESULTS: neither ferrous nor ferric iron daily exposures at the juvenile period result in any effect in control animals at adulthood although ferrous iron repeated administration in infancy limited weight gain. Ferrous iron was unable to limit the experimental colitis (1.71 ± 0.27 MPO U/mg proteinvs 2.47 ± 0.22 MPO U/mg protein in colitic mice). In contrast, ferric iron significantly prevented the increase of MPO activity (1.64 ± 0.14 MPO U/mg protein) in TNBS-induced colitis. Moreover, this positive effect was observed at both the doses of ferric iron used (75 and 150 mg/kg per day po - 6 wk). In the study we also compared, in both rats and mice, the consequences of chronic repeated low level exposure to ferric iron (75 mg/kg per day po - 6 wk) on TNBS-induced colitis and its related dysbiosis. We confirmed that ferric iron limited the TNBS-induced increase of MPO activity in both the rodent species. Background:Age-related changes in brain structure may constitute the starting point for cerebral function alteration.Physical activity(PA)demonstrated favorable associations with total brain volume,but its relationship with cortical thickness(CT)remains unclear.We investigated the cross-sectional associations between PA level and CT in community-dwelling people aged 70 years and older.Methods:A total of 403 older adults aged 74.8±4.0 years(mean±SD)who underwent a baseline magnetic resonance imaging examination and who had data on PA and confounders were included.PA was assessed with a questionnaire.Participants were categorized according to PA levels.Multiple linear regressions were used to compare the brain CT(mm)of the inactive group(no PA at all)with 6 active groups(growing PA levels)in 34 regions of interest.Results:Compared with inactive persons,people who achieved PA at a level of 1500-1999 metabolic equivalent task-min/week(i.e.,about6-7 h of brisk walking for exercise) and those who achieved it at 2000-2999 metabolic equivalent task-min/week(i.e.,8-11 h of brisk walking for exercise)had higher CT in the fusiform gyrus and the temporal pole.Additionally,dose-response associations between PA and CT were found in the fusiform gyrus(B=0.011,SE=0.004,adj.p=0.035),the temporal pole(B=0.026,SE=0.009,adj.p=0.048),and the caudal middle frontal gyrus,the entorhinal,medial orbitofrontal,lateral occipital,and insular cortices.Conclusion:This study demonstrates a positive association between PA level and CT in temporal areas such as the fusiform gyrus,a brain region often associated to Alzheimer’s disease in people aged 70 years and older.Future investigations focusing on PA type may help to fulfil remaining knowledge gaps in this field.

Alpha-thalassemia trait and sickle trait are not commonly considered risk factors of ischemic heart disease.We report the case of a non-atherosclerotic silent myocardial infarction in a 46-year-old woman,carrier of the alphathalassemia trait(homozygous deletion of locus-3.7) combined with sickle cell trait.While the patient was included as healthy volunteer for a metabolic study,we performed cardiac magnetic resonance imagery showing a left ventricle apicolateral myocardial infarction.Coronary computed tomography angiography showed normal coronary arteries with a coronary calcium score of 0.The patient was treated with low-dose aspirin in secondary prevention afterwards.This case allows us to discuss cardiovascular risk among patients presenting with both alpha-thalassemia trait and sickle cell trait and the indication of cardiac imagery in such patients even when considered as low-cardiovascular risk.

Ultrafast antiferromagnet rearrangement in Co/irMn/CoGd trilayers

Antiferromagnets offer great potential for high-speed data processing applications,as they can expend spintronic devices from a static storage and gigahertz frequency range to the terahertz range.However,their zero net magnetization makes them difficult to manipulate and detect.In recent years,there has been a lot of attention given to the ultrafast manipulation of magnetic order using ultra-short single laser pulses,but it remains unknown whether a similar scenario can be observed in antiferromagnets.In this work,we demonstrate the manipulation of antiferromagnets with a single femtosecond laser pulse in perpendicular exchange-biased Co/ir Mn/Co Gd trilayers.We study the dual exchange bias interlayer interaction in quasi-static conditions and competition in ultrafast antiferromagnet rearrangement.Our results show that,compared to conventional ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic systems,the ir Mn antiferromagnet can be ultrafast and efficiently manipulated by the coupled Co Gd ferrimagnetic layer,which paves the way for potential energy-efficient spintronic devices.

In spintronic applications,there is a constant demand for lower power consumption,high densities,and fast writing speed of data storage.All-optical switching(AOS)is a technique that uses laser pulses to switch the magnetic state of a recording medium without any external devices,offering unsurpassed recording rates and a simple structure.Despite extensive research on the mechanism of AOS,low energy consumption and fast magnetization reversing remain challenging engineering questions.In this paper,we propose a newly designed cavity-enhanced AOS in Gd Co alloy,which promotes optical absorption by twofold,leading to a 50%reduction in energy consumption.Additionally,the time-resolved measurement shows that the time of reversing magnetization reduces at the same time.This new approach makes AOS an ideal solution for energy-effective and fast magnetic recording,paving the way for future developments in high-speed,low-power-consumption data recording devices.

Surface morphology-optical properties relationship in thermochromic VO_(2) thin films obtained by air oxidation of vanadium nitride

In this paper,vanadium nitride(VN)thin films have been deposited on Al substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering.Thermochromic VO_(2) films have been obtained by air oxidation of VN samples performed at three temperatures(450,525 and 550℃)at various durations(lower than 50 min).X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrometry of the VN oxidized films indicate that VO_(2) and V2O5 are the only phases produced during the oxidation process.Vanadium dioxide is the first oxide formed.It coexists with VN in a long period at 450℃ or suddenly disappears at 525 and 550℃.Whatever the temperature,V2O5 is exclusively detected after the total oxidation of VN.This oxide is detrimental to the thermochromic performance of films.The emissivity-switching properties of the oxidized films were analyzed by infrared camera in the 7.5e13 mm range.The comparison among all the samples exhibiting a thermochromic behavior shows that the maximum emissivity switch is independent of the oxidation temperature and the surface morphology of the samples.These results could open a new strategy in the investigation of VN oxidation as a method to obtain VO_(2),along with an insight into the correlation between surface morphology and optical properties.

Background:Post-mortem and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies of the central sulcus,as an indicator of motor cortex,have shown that in the general population there is greater representation of the dominant compared to the non-dominant hand.Studies of musicians,who are highly skilled in performing complex finger movements,have suggested this dominance is affected by musical training,but methods and findings have been mixed.Objective:In the present study,an automated image analysis pipeline using a 3D mesh approach was applied to measure central sulcus(CS)asymmetry on MR images obtained for a cohort of right-handed pianists and matched controls.Methods:The depth,length,and surface area(SA)of the CS and thickness of the cortical mantle adjacent to the CS were measured in each cerebral hemisphere by applying the BrainVISA Morphologist 2012 software pipeline to 3D T1-weighted MR images of the brain obtained for 15 right-handed pianists and 14 controls,matched with respect to age,sex,and handedness.Asymmetry indices(AIs)were calculated for each parameter and multivariate analysis of covariance(MANCOVA),and post hoc tests were performed to compare differences between the pianist and control groups.Results:A one-way MANCOVA across the four AIs,controlling for age and sex,revealed a significant main effect of group(P=0.04),and post hoc analysis revealed that while SA was significantly greater in the left than the right cerebral hemisphere in controls(Pne to 3D MR images has provided robust evidence of sig-nificantly increased representation of the non-dominant hand in the brain of pianists compared to age-,sex-,and handedness-matched controls.This finding supports prior research showing structural differe

The work aims to develop a process for freezing desalination of seawater on cold walls. The experiments were performed with water/NaCl solutions of different concentrations and with samples of seawater. The pilot crystallizer consists of a cooled tube immersed in a cylindrical double jacketed tank containing water to be treated. The complete process of desalination is conducted in two steps: the freezing step, leading to the crystallization of the ice layer and the sweating step, which consists of purifying the ice layer in depth by melting the impure zones. The systematic study of the influence of operating parameters has highlighted the important role of the cooling ramp and salinity of the solution on the purity of the ice produced. In the absence of stirring, the temperature of the double jacket also has a noticeable effect on the purity of the ice due to temperature gradients, and consequently, convection currents that may result in the solution. The results of this work show the feasibility of the technique and give a good indication of operating conditions that can be used to produce drinking water.

Background and Purpose -The shape and exact size of lacunar infarcts have been investigated only postmortem. Recent imaging techniques based on triangulation and connectivity can now be used for 3D segmentation of cerebral lesions. The shape and size of lacunar infarcts was investigated using these techniques in 10 cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) patients. Methods -We segmented 102 lacunar infarcts on T1-weighted images. The surface of the corresponding set of voxels was computed as a mesh of triangles. Thereafter, the shape of each lesion in 3D was visually analyzed by 2 investigators. Results -The volume of lesions ranged from 10.5 to 1146 mm, with 93%of them having a volume nents appeared larger than the others, and a tail extension was noticed in 13 of 102 lesions. Conclusions -These results sugges t the following: (1) most lacunar infarcts in CADASIL have a volume far below one third of that of a sphere of 15 mm in diameter, the upper limit currently used for their identification on 2D imaging; (2) a significant proportion of lacunar infarcts have a shape distinct from the spheroid-ovoid morphology; and (3) les ions with a complex shape may result from the involvement of the largest small a rteries, confluence of ischemic lesions, or secondary tissue degeneration. The s egmentation of lacunar infarcts appears promising to better understand the patho physiology of tissue lesions secondary to small vessel diseases.
