Evaluation of the cyclic shear modulus of soils is a crucial but challenging task for many geotechnical earthquake engineering and soil dynamic issues. Improper determination of this property unnecessarily drives up design and maintenance costs or even leads to the construction of unsafe structures. Due to the complexities involved in the direct measurement, empirical curves for estimating the cyclic shear modulus have been commonly adopted in practice for simplicity and economical considerations. However, a systematic and robust approach for formulating a reliable model and empirical curve for cyclic shear modulus prediction for clayey soils is still lacking. In this study, the Bayesian model class selection approach is utilized to identify the most significant soil parameters affecting the normalized cyclic shear modulus and a reliable predictive model for normally to moderately over-consolidated clays is proposed. Results show that the predictability and reliability of the proposed model out performs the well-known empirical models. Finally, a new design chart is established for practical usage.

Objective To study the clinical and genetic features of familiar amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP). Methods Three families of suspected FAP in China mainland and Macao were investigated on aspects of clinical manifestations, histological features, and gene analysis. Results All the 3 families had the clinical features of sensory and motor polyneuropathies, and notable vegetative nerve involvements. Affected cases of one family had ultrasound proved cardiomyopathy. Histological studies showed amyloid deposition in all the biopsy tissues of the affected cases of the 3 families, and anti-transthyretin antisera staining was positive in 3 cases of one family. Gene analysis confirmed that mutation types were amyloidogenic transthyretin (ATTR) Val30Met, Phe33Val, and Gly67Glu in the 3 families respectively. The ATTR Gly67Glu family had a shorter survival time due to the heart involvement compared with the other 2 families. Conclusion FAP is an autosomal dominant inherited disease, with its clinical manifestations related to the type of genetic mutation.

In this paper,we study and analyze the regularized least squares for function-on-function regression *** our model,both the predictors(input data)and responses(output data)are multivariate functions(with d variables andd variables respectively),and the model coefficient lies in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space(RKHS).We show under mild condition on the reproducing kernel and input data statistics that the convergence rate of excess prediction risk by the regularized least squares is minimax *** examples based on medical image analysis and atmospheric point spread function estimation are considered and tested,and the results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed model is comparable with that of other testing methods.

A laboratory study was carried out on both natural and compacted specimens to investigate the complex soil-water interaction in an unsaturated expansive clay. The laboratory study includes the measurement of soil-water characteristic curves, 1D free swelling tests, measurement of swelling pressure and shrinkage tests. The test results revealed that the air-entry value of the natural specimen was quite low due to cracks and fissures present. The hydraulic hysteresis of the natural specimen was relatively insignificant as compared with the compacted specimen. Within a suction range 0 to 500 kPa, a bilinear relationship between free swelling strain (or swelling pressure) and initial soil suction was observed for both the natural and compacted specimens. As a result of over-consolidation and secondary structures such as cementation and cracks, the natural specimens exhibited significant lower swelling (or swelling pressure) than the compacted specimen. The change of matric suction exerts a more significant effect on the water phase than on the soil skeleton for this expansive clay.

This study investigated whether four cumulus-specific genes: follicular stimulating hormone receptor (FSHr), hyaluronan synthase 2 (Has2), prostaglandin synthase 2 (Ptgs2) and steroidogenic acute regulator protein (Star), were correctly reprogrammed to be transcriptionally silent following somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) in a murine model. Cumulus cells of C57×CBA F1 female mouse were injected into enucleated oocytes, followed by activation in 10 μmol/L strontium chloride for 5 h and subsequent in vitro culture up to the blastocyst stage. Expression of cumulus-specific genes in SCNT-derived embryos at 2-cell, 4-cell and day 4.5 blastocyst stages was compared with corresponding in vivo fertilized embryos by real-time PCR. It was demonstrated that immediately after the first cell cycle, SCNT-derived 2-cell stage embryos did not express all four cumulus-specific genes, which continually remained silent at the 4-cell and blastocyst stages. It is therefore concluded that all four cumulus-specific genes were correctly reprogrammed to be silent following nuclear transfer with cumulus donor cells in the mouse model. This would imply that the poor preimplantation developmental competence of SCNT embryos derived from cumulus cells is due to incomplete reprogramming of other embryonic genes, rather than cumulus-specific genes.

We consider a gradient iteration algorithm for prediction of functional linear regression under the framework of reproducing kernel Hilbert *** the algorithm,we use an early stopping technique,instead of the classical Tikhonov regularization,to prevent the iteration from an overfitting *** mild conditions,we obtain upper bounds,essentially matching the known minimax lower bounds,for excess prediction *** almost sure convergence is also established for the proposed algorithm.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of intramuscular injection of testosterone undecanoate on overall quality of life （QoL） in men with testosterone deficiency syndrome （TDS）. A randomized controlled trial over a 12-month period was carried out in 2009. One hundred and twenty men aged 40 years and above with a diagnosis of TDS （serum total testosterone 〈12 nmol 1-1 and total Aging Male Symptom （AMS） scores ≥ 27） were invited to participate. Interventions comprised intramuscular injection of either placebo or 1000 mg testosterone undecanoate, given at weeks O, 6, 18, 30 and 42. This paper presents the secondary analysis of QoL changes measured in the scores of Short-Form-12 （SF-12） scale at baseline, weeks 30 and 48 after the first injection. A total of 56/60 and 58/60 men from the active treatment and placebo group, respectively, completed the study. At week 48, before adjusting for baseline differences, the QoL of men in the treatment group improved significantly in five out of the eight domains on SF-12. The physical health composite scores improved 4.0 points from a baseline of 41.9±7.0 in the treatment group compared to 0.8 point from a baseline of 43.7--7.1 in the placebo group （F=3.652, P=0.027）. The mental health composite scores improved 4.4 points from a baseline of 37.1±9.0 in the treatment group compared to 1.0 points from a baseline of 37.6±7.9 in the placebo group （F=4.514, P=-0.018）. After adjusting for baseline differences, significant improvement was observed in mental health composite scores, but not in physical health composite scores. LQng-acting testosterone undecanoate significanUy improved the mental health component of QoL in men with TDS.

Men＇s health concerns have evolved from the traditional andrology and male sexual health to a more holistic approach that encompasses male psychological, social and physical health. The poor state of health in men compared to their female counterparts is well documented. A review of the epidemiological data from Malaysia noted a similar trend in which men die at higher rates in under 1 and above 15 years old groups and most disease categories compared to women. In Malaysia, the main causes of death in men are non-communicable diseases and injuries. Risk factors, such as risk-taking behaviour, smoking and hypertension, are prevalent and amenable to early interventions. Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and prostate disorders are also prevalent. However, many of these morbidities go unreported and are not diagnosed early; therefore, opportunities for early intervention are missed. This reflects poor health knowledge and inadequate health-care utilisation among Malaysian men. Their health-seeking behaviour has been shown to be strongly influenced by family members and friends. However, more research is needed to identify men＇s unmet health-care needs and to develop optimal strategies for addressing them. Because the Malaysian population is aging and there is an increase in sedentary lifestyles, optimizing men＇s health will remain a challenge unless effective measures are implemented. The existing male-unfriendly health-care system and the negative influence of masculinity on men＇s health behaviour must be addressed. A national men＇s health policy based on a male-friendly approach to health-care delivery is urgently needed to provide a framework for addressing these challenges.

Bevacizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration in Chinese patients in a clinical setting

AIM：To determine the outcome of non-investigational treatment with intravitreal bevacizumab（IVB） in neovascular age-related macular degeneration（AMD）patients.· METHODS：Retrospective chart review of 81 eyes with neovascular AMD followed-up for at least 12 mo and received 3-monthly loading IVB ***-treat was based upon the individual clinician＇s *** visual acuity（BCVA） and optical coherence tomography measurements of central foveal thickness outcomes were evaluated at 12,24 mo.· RESULTS：Eighty-one eyes（of 75 patients） completed12 mo of follow-up and 44 eyes（of 41 patients） completed24 mo of *** mean baseline logMAR BCVA significantly improved from 0.94±0.69 to 0.85±0.68 at12mo（P〈0.001） and from 0.91±0.65 to 0.85±0.60（P=0.004）at 24 *** proportion of eyes that lost 〈15 logMAR letters at 12 mo was 90.1%and at 24 mo was 81.8%.IVB was effective in improving visual acuity in both treatment naive and previous photodynamic therapy（PDT）-treated *** naive patients required significantly fewer injections than patients with prior *** regression analysis identified that poorer baseline visual acuity was associated with greater improvement in visual acuity（P=0.015）.· CONCLUSION：Fewer injections in clinical practice may result in suboptimal visual outcomes compared with clinical trials of IVB in neovascular AMD *** baseline visual acuity and prior PDT treatment may also improve vision after *** safety and durability of effect was maintained at 24 mo.
