Herpes simplex virus type 1 in peptic ulcer disease: An inverse association with Helicobacter pylori

AIM： To assess the frequency of herpes simplex virus type I in upper gastrointestinal tract ulcers and normal mucosa with the modern and better assays and also with a larger number of well characterized patients and controls and its relationship to Helicobacter pylori（H pylori）. METHODS： Biopsy specimens from 90 patients （34 with gastric ulcer of the prepyloric area and 56 with duodenal ulcer） were evaluated. Biopsies from 50 patients with endoscopically healthy mucosa were considered as the control group. The method used to identify herpes simplex virus-1 （HSV-1） was polymerase chain reaction. Hpylori was detected by the CLO-test and by histological method. RESULTS： Herpes simplex virus-1 was detected in 28 of 90 patients with peptic ulcer （31%） Ⅲ of 34 patients with gastric ulcer （32.4%） and 17 of 56 with duodenal ulcer （30.4%）1 exclusively close to the ulcerous lesion. All control group samples were negative for HSV-1. The likelihood of Hpylori negativity among peptic ulcer patients was significantly higher in HSV-1 positive cases than in HSV-1 negative cases （P = 0.009）. Gastric ulcer patients with HSV-1 positivity were strongly associated with an increased possibility of Helicobacter pylori negativity compared to duodenal ulcer patients （P = 0.010）. CONCLUSION： HSV-1 is frequent in upper gastrointestinal tract ulcers but not in normal gastric andduodenal mucosa. There is an inverse association between HSV-1 and Hpylori infection.

Sound Insulation Performance of Prefabricated Concrete Partitions in Hellenic School Buildings

The scope of this study is to investigate flanking noise transmission through joints between prefabricated concrete elements in Hellenic school buildings;such joints apparently are non-existent in the wholesome structure of ordinary concrete *** insulation measurements were carried out in two prefabricated concrete buildings of the cell type;the latter involves demountable/reusable concrete elements(the cells);in this case,apparently,flanking noise transmission at joints,may be even more pronounced.A sample of seventeen fa?ade and interior partitions of classrooms was *** insulation was also predicted based on classical *** of the measured data confirms,by and large,the satisfactory sound insulation performance of the test partitions,with the exception of composite partitions which involve door and window *** latter were identified to be a major source of sound insulation *** importance of meticulous sealing of joints is demonstrated.

Sweet cherries,Prunus avium L.(Rosaceae),are gaining importance due to their perenniallity and nutritional attributes beneficial for human ***,sweet cherry cultivars exhibit a wide range of phenotypic diversity in important agronomic traits,such as flowering time and defense reactions against *** this study,wholegenome resequencing(WGRS)was employed to characterize genetic variation,population structure and allelic variants in a panel of 20 sweet cherry and one wild cherry genotypes,embodying the majority of cultivated Greek germplasm and a representative of a local wild cherry elite *** 21 genotypes were sequenced in an average depth of coverage of 33.91×.and effective mapping depth,to the genomic reference sequence of‘Satonishiki’cultivar,between 22.21×to 36.62×.Discriminant analysis of principal components(DAPC)with SNPs revealed two clusters of *** was a rapid linkage disequilibrium decay,as the majority of SNP pairs with r2 in near complete disequilibrium(>0.8)were found at physical distances less than 10 *** analysis of the variants showed that the genomic ratio of non-synonymous/synonymous(dN/dS)changes was *** higher dN frequency in the Greek cohort of sweet cherry could be the result of artificial selection pressure imposed by breeding,in combination with the vegetative propagation of domesticated cultivars through *** majority of SNPs with high impact(e.g.,stop codon gaining,frameshift),were identified in genes involved in flowering time,dormancy and defense reactions against pathogens,providing promising resources for future breeding *** study has established the foundation for further large scale characterization of sweet cherry germplasm,enabling breeders to incorporate diverse germplasm and allelic variants to fine tune flowering and maturity time and disease resistance in sweet cherry cultivars.

Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)has significantly affected different physiological systems,with a potentially profound effect on athletic ***,to date,such an effect has been neither addressed nor ***,the aim of this study was to investigate fitness indicators,along with the respiratory and metabolic profile,in post-COVID-19 *** male soccer players,were divided into two groups:non-hospitalized COVID-19(n=20,Age:[25.2±4.1]years,Body Surface Area[BSA]:[1.9±0.2]m^(2),body fat:11.8%±3.4%)versus[vs]healthy(n=20,Age:[25.1±4.4]years,BSA:[2.0±0.3]m^(2),body fat:10.8%±4.5%).For each athlete,prior to cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET),body composition,spirometry,and lactate blood levels,were *** between groups were assessed with the independent samples t-test(p<0.05).Several differences were detected between the two groups:ventilation(:Resting:[14.7±3.1]L·min^(−1)vs.[11.5±2.6]L·min^(−1),p=0.001;Maximal Effort:[137.1±15.5]L·min^(−1)vs.[109.1±18.4]L·min^(−1),p<0.001),ratio VE/maximal voluntary ventilation(Resting:7.9%±1.8%vs.5.7%±1.7%,p<0.001;Maximal Effort:73.7%±10.8%vs.63.1%±9.0%,p=0.002),ratioVE/BSA(Resting:7.9%±2.0%vs.5.9%±1.4%,p=0.001;Maximal Effort:73.7%±11.1%vs.66.2%±9.2%,p=0.026),heart rate(Maximal Effort:[191.6±7.8]bpm vs.[196.6±8.6]bpm,p=0.041),and lactate acid(Resting:[1.8±0.8]mmol·L^(−1)vs.[0.9±0.1]mmol·L^(−1),p<0.001;Maximal Effort:[11.0±1.6]mmol·L^(−1)vs.[9.8±1.2]mmol·L^(−1),p=0.009),during *** significant differences were identified regarding maximal oxygen uptake([55.7±4.4]ml·min^(−1)·kg−1 vs.[55.4±4.6]ml·min^(−1)·kg−1,p=0.831).Our findings demonstrate a pattern of compromised respiratory function in post-COVID-19 athletes characterized by increased respiratory work at both rest and maximum effort as well as hyperventilation during exercise,which may explain the reported increased metabolic needs.
