In this work we evaluate the role of a natural mineralizer-oxide like cassiterite (snO2) on the cement properties. In particular, we study the effect of different quantities of snO2 with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt% on burnability of industrial raw mix by free lime evaluation. We obtain four datasets, with successive increase of temperature at 1250℃, 1350℃, 1400℃ and 1450℃. We study the produced cassiterite-added clinker with X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (sEM). Though, we characterize the new phases formed and whether, adding excess snO2 is promote forms of C3s, C2s influencing the final quality of cement.

BACKGROUND Patients with stage II-III colorectal cancer (CRC) treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, gain a 25% survival benefit. In the context of personalized medicine, there is a need to identify patients with CRC who may benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy. Molecular profiling could guide treatment decisions in these patients. Thymidylate synthase (TYMs) gene polymorphisms, KRAs and BRAF could be included in the molecular profile under consideration. AIM To investigate the association of TYMs gene polymorphisms, KRAs and BRAF mutations with survival of CRC patients treated with *** A retrospective study studied formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues (FFPEs) of consecutive patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy during January/2005-January/2007. FFPEs were analysed with PCR for the detection of TYMs polymorphisms, mutated KRAs (mKRAs) and BRAF (mBRAF). Patients were classified into three groups (high, medium and low risk) according to 5’UTR TYMs polymorphisms similarly, based on 3’UTR polymorphism ins/loss of heterozygosity (LOH) patients were allocated into two groups (high and low risk of relapse, respectively). Cox regression models examined the associated 5- year survival outcomes. REsULTs One hundred and thirty patients with early stage CRC (stage I-II: 55 patients;stage III 75 patients;colon: 70 patients;rectal: 60 patients) were treated with surgery and chemotherapy. The 5-year disease free survival and overall survival rate was 61.6% and 73.9% respectively. 5’UTR polymorphisms of intermediate TYMs polymorphisms (2RG/3RG, 2RG/LOH, 3RC/LOH) were associated with lower risk for relapse [hazard ratio (HR) 0.320, P = 0.02 and HR 0.343, P = 0.013 respectively] and death (HR 0.368, P = 0.031 and HR 0.394, P = 0.029 respectively). The 3’UTR polymorphism ins/LOH was independently associated with increased risk for disease recurrence (P = 0.001) and death (P = 0.005). mBRAF (3.8% of patients) was associated with increased risk of death (HR 4.500,

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of novel electrospun fiber mats loaded with alkannin and shikonin(A/s)derivatives,using as carrier a highly biocompatible,bio-derived,ecofriendly polymer such as poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid](PHB).PHB fibers containing a mixture of A/s derivatives at different ratios were successfully fabricated via *** evidenced by scanning electron microscopy,the fibers formed a bead-free mesh with average diameters from 1.25 to 1.47 *** measurements suggest that electrospinning marginally increases the amorphous content of the predominantly crystalline PHB in the fibers,while a significant drug amount lies near the fiber surface for samples of high total A/s *** scaffolds displayed satisfactory characteristics,with the lower concentrations of A/s mixture-loaded PHB fiber mats achieving higher porosity,water uptake ratios,and entrapment *** in vitro dissolution studies revealed that all samples released more than 70%of the encapsulated drug after 72 *** PHB scaffolds tested by cell viability assay were proven non-toxic for Hs27 fibroblasts,with the 0.15 wt.%sample favoring cell attachment,spreading onto the scaffold surface,as well as cell ***,the antimicrobial activity of PHB meshes loaded with A/s mixture was documented for staphylococcus epidermidis and ***.

AIM:To test whether clamping during liver surgery predisposes to hepatic vein ***:We performed a retrospective analysis of 210 patients who underwent liver resection with simultaneous inflow and outflow ***,flow in the hepatic veins was assessed by Doppler ultrasonography during the reperfusion ***,patency of the hepatic veins was assessed by contrast-enhanced CT angiography,when necessary after 3-6 mo follow ***:Twelve patients(5.7%) developed intraoperative liver remnant ***,intraoperative ultrasonography did not reveal evidence of hepatic vein *** three of these patients a kinking of the common trunk of the middle and left hepatic veins hindering outflow was recognized and was managed successfully bysuturing the liver remnant to the *** three patients(10.9%) who developed signs of mild outflow obstruction postoperatively,had no evidence of thrombi in the hepatic veins or flow disturbances on ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced CT angiography,while *** term assessment of the patency of the hepatic veins over a 3-6 mo follow-up period did not reveal thrombi formation or clinical manifestations of out flow ***:Extrahepatic dissection and clamping of the hepatic veins does not predispose to clinically important thrombosis.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome （HPs） is defined as a clinical triad including liver disease, abnormal pulmonary gas exchange and evidence of intrapulmonary vascular dilatations. We report a 61-year-old male presented with fatigue, long-lasting fever, loss of weight, signs of portal hypertension, hepatosplenomegaly, cholestasis and progressive dyspnoea over the last year. Clinical, laboratory and histological findings confirmed the diagnosis of granulomatous hepatitis. HPs due to hepatic granulomainduced portal hypertension was proved to be the cause of severe hypoxemia of the patient as confirmed by contrast-enhanced echocardiography. Reversion of HPs after corticosteroid therapy was confirmed by a new contrastenhanced echocardiography along with the normalization of cholestatic enzymes and improvement of the patient＇ s conditions. This is the first case of complete reversion of HPs in a non-cirrhotic patient with hepatic granuloma, indicating that intrapulmonary shunt in liver diseases is a functional phenomenon and HPs can be developed even in miscellaneous liver involvement as in this case.

AIM:To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of our new cytoreductive surgery(CRs)and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion(HIPEC)***:Retrospective review of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies who were suitable candidates for CRs and HIPEC between 12/1/2009 and 10/1/*** clinicopathologic data were reviewed with a special focus on the surgical outcome and the postoperative morbidity and ***:Fourteen patients were *** age was 64 years;seven were *** primary tumors were:colonic(29%),appendiceal(36%),peritoneal mesothelioma(14%),gastric(7%),adenocarcinoma of unknown primary(7%),and gastrointestinal stromal tumor(7%).Eleven patients(79%)received CRs/HIPEC,three for *** patients that did not undergo CRs/HIPEC had an average peritoneal cancer index(PCI)of *** eight patients that underwent curative CRs/HIPEC had an average PCI of 10 and a completeness of cytoreduction score of 0(87.5%) or 1(12.5%).Postoperative morbidity was 36%;the worst adverse event was Grade 3 *** rate was 0%.CONCLUsION:CRs with HIPEC is safe and feasible at tertiary institutions with fledgling *** is an accurate predictor of surgical outcomes.

Awareness and attitudes of Greek medical students on colorectal cancer screening

AIM: To prospectively assess the knowledge and attitudes of medical students (Ms), as tomorrow’s physicians, about colorectal cancer (CRC) and its screening ***: Three hundred fourth year Ms of the University of Athens were enrolled in this survey. Their selection was random, based on student identification card number. All participants completed an anonymous written questionnaire over a 4 month period. The questionnaire was divided into 4 sections and included queries about CRC-related symptoms, screening with colonoscopy and Ms awareness and attitudes in this field. Following collection and analysis of the data, the results are presented as percentages of answers for each separate question. REsULTs: Two hundred and sixty-five students an-swered the questionnaire over a 4 mo period. Interestingly, only 69% of the study population considered CRC to be a high-risk condition for public health. However, the vast majority of participants identified CRC-related symptoms and acknowledged its screening to be of great value in reducing CRC incidence and mortality. A very small proportion (38%) had received information material regarding CRC screening (either during their medical training or as a part of information provided to the general public) and only 60% of the participants declared willingness to receive further information. Regarding colonoscopy, 85% would prefer an alternative to colonoscopy methods for CRC screening. Moreover, 53% considered it to be a painful method and 68% would appreciate more information about the ***: Ms in Greece need to be better informed about CRC screening and screening colonoscopy.
