Retinal capillary plexus in Parkinson’s disease using optical coherence tomography angiography

AIM:To evaluate the alterations of the retinal microvasculature and foveal avascular zone in patients with Parkinson’s disease(PD)using optical coherence tomography angiography(OCT-A).METHODs:A retrospective study of PD patients examined in the Ophthalmology Department of the General Hospital of Athens,“Georgios Gennimatas”from March 2021 to March 2022 was *** 44 patients with PD were included and 18 healthy controls were examined,hence a total of 124 eyes were enrolled in the *** foveal and parafoveal superficial and deep capillary plexus vascular density(fsCP-VD,fDCP-VD,psCP-VD,pDCP-CD)and foveal avascular zone(FAZ)were quantified with *** coherence tomography(OCT)was used to measure macular *** statistical analysis was conducted by using a mixed effect linear regression ***:After adjustment for age and gender,the mean parafoveal superficial capillary plexus vascular density(psCP-VD)and mean parafoveal deep capillary plexus vascular density(pDCP-VD)were significantly decreased in individuals with PD(Pstatistical *** FAZ area and perimeter were significantly decreased(Pstatistical *** retinal thickness(CRT)was significantly decreased in individuals with PD(Pss(TRT)was decreased(P=0.025)by-11μm(95%CI-22,-1.5)while nasal retinal thickness(NRT)only approached statistical significance(P=0.066).CONCLUsION:The mean psCP-VD,pDCP-VD,CRT and TRT are significantly decreased and FAZ is altered in individuals with *** findings can be potentially used as biomarkers for the diagnosis and evaluation of early PD.

Dear Editor,Fungal keratitis is a serious and potentially sightthreatening infection that poses a global health concern,with higher incidence rates reported in low-income countries and regions with tropical climates[1-3].Risk factors for fungal keratitis include trauma with vegetative matter,contact lens wear,history of ocular surgery,chronic topical steroid use,low socioeconomic status and tropical climate[1-2].Fungi have the propensity to penetrate deep into the corneal stroma,making the infection difficult to treat with topical antifungal agents *** such as corneal perforation and endophthalmitis can arise in severe cases,making early identification of the causative fungal pathogen of utmost importance[4-5].Moreover,obtaining susceptibilities to the available antifungal agents can be sight and eye saving[5].

He has served on the California, Texas and Massachusetts Professional Associations, as well as the National Association. He has tendered 20 years of service to the field through academic medicine, earning a master’s degree in medical education to assist in developing Chinese medical doctoral programs and institutional review boards. He earned an OM.D. in 1988, a DAOM in 2002, and a Ph.D. focused on pulse diagnosis as clinical epistemology in 2009. He has published five books, including TCM Case studies Dermatology, Li shi-zhen Pulse studies: An Illustrated Guide, Neoclassical Pulse Diagnosis, Cycles in Medical Astrology, and Transformation: Treating Trauma with Acupuncture and Herbs.

Management of obstructed colorectal carcinoma in an emergency setting:An update

A common reclamation practice for closed coal surface mines is filling them with water to form pit *** creation and sustainability of these lakes are significantly affected by the stability of the corresponding *** present study provides a general framework for analyzing the water filling’s effect on slope stability based on a new water filling index,which can indirectly consider the factors affecting the process and efficiently quantify the filling speed’s *** assumptions of the proposed approach are thoroughly discussed,and the range of the water filling index is ***,the safety factor is calculated using the finite element method with the shear strength reduction technique during the filling process for various conditions(soil properties,slope geometry,hydraulic conditions,and water filling speed).Results are presented as normalized stability charts for practical *** the water filling,the stability gradually decreases until the reservoir reaches a critical level of 10%e40%of the total height;it then increases to even more stable conditions than the initial ***,the present analysis allows for the preliminary stability evaluation of a coal mine during the formation of a pit lake and the appropriate quantification of the water filling’s effect.

In this study, we investigated the performance improvement caused by the addition of copper(Cu)nanoparticles to high-density polyethylene(HDPE) matrix material. Composite materials, with filler percentages of 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 wt% were synthesized through the material extrusion(MEX)3D printing technique. The synthesized nanocomposite filaments were utilized for the manufacturing of specimens suitable for the experimental procedure that followed. Hence, we were able to systematically investigate their tensile, flexural, impact, and microhardness properties through various mechanical tests that were conducted according to the corresponding standards. Broadband Dielectric spectroscopy was used to investigate the electrical/dielectric properties of the composites. Moreover, by employing means of Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) we were also able to further investigate their vibrational, structural, and thermal properties. Concomitantly, means of scanning electron microscopy(sEM), as well as atomic force microscopy(AFM), were used for the examination of the morphological and structural characteristics of the synthesized specimens, while energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy(EDs) was also performed in order to receive a more detailed picture on the structural characteristics of the various synthesized composites. The corresponding nanomaterials were also assessed for their antibacterial properties regarding staphylococcus aureus(s. aureus) and Escherichia coli(E. coli) with the assistance of a method named screening agar well diffusion. The results showed that the mechanical properties of HDPE benefited from the utilization of Cu as a filler, as they showed a notable improvement. The specimen of HDPE/Cu 4.0 wt% was the one that presented the highest levels of reinforcement in four out of the seven tested mechanical properties(for example, it exhibited a 36.7%improvement in the flexural strength, compared to the pure matrix).
